My problem is it always says I've entered the wrong password. I've tried the administrator account password and also the long windows 7 homegroup password.
tl;dr: what kind of password is it looking for?
I'm in normal mode then I press "ayiw to yank a word into register a, gvim shows the "ayi as I type it near the bottom right corner. Is it possible to get this real-time display in console vim, if so how?

Few problems, but when the red arrow indicated updates I clicked on it and it was for an upgrade to 10.04.I decided to upgrade but it didn't go well.I ended up with a black screen and white letters. I didn't know what to do.I don't know many commands.I posted here but got no response.I had no access to the Internet.I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 8.04 from the CD.At one point it asked me about a 10GB partition.I didn't really understand it at that point but clicked ok.When I got the computer running again I noticed that it was a new partition with 7 GB free space.What happened to all my precious other files?
I am panicking because I read a similar thread about a Windows/Ubuntu partition and the person was worried about losing all Windows files.I did back up the files on an external hard drive but not recently. Losing them would mean I had to make up a lot of work.
I'm running PCLinuxOS with no other OS installed. Thought I'd have a go at chainloading. just for interests sake.So, I opened Konsole, entered su and entered my root password. The command line turned red so, I imagined all was well. But when I then keyed in '/boot/grub/.menu.lst' I was refused access.
View 10 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to install 11.2 from DVD, the user information I entered at the beginning of the install gets lost. I get to the Automatic Configuration step at the end of the install where the computer needs to reboot, and it asks for my user ID and password (it shouldn't do that). It won't accept the user I created (always says login failed), but it will accept root. That really doesn't matter, because the Automatic Configuration step has done anything, and I have a busted install. I've tried the install 4 or 5 times, but it is always the same problem. I eventually reinstalled 11.1 without any problem (though I did have to click Use Entire Disk on the partition section so it would delete the ext4 partitions created by the 11.2 install and create ext3 partitions).

Have followed guidelines on turningoff NetworkManager and turning on network. i went to command line and did a couple of chkconfig things and entered ip address, with subnet. when i do ip addr show i see under eth0 inet 192.168.3.11/32 which is 255.255.255.0, i'm pretty sure. i do not see gateway. when i go to system/network get prompted to log into root, network config window opens. icheck eth0 and the subnet mask is 192.168.3.1, the gateway, which is in correctly, in the gateway slot, as well. i still can not ping to from my xp based multihomed router.

I have 3 drives in my computer. I installed Fedora 11 on my two biggest one, with the LVM treating them as one single drive. I attempted to install XP on my last drive. As I was installing, I selected my third drive (I'm 100% sure it is the correct drive as it is an 80gb whilst the others are 120 and 200 respectively) and told it to delete the partition on that drive and format. After I did that, it started to format, starting with my 120! I'm fairly sure that it was merely a quick format, as it only took 5-10 seconds for it to format, and that my data is still there. Is there any way to recover my "lost" data, or did I just really screw myself over?
View 6 Replies View RelatedAt the Command Line Prompt I am able to start some Applications (such as openoffice.org or evolution) and the command line prompt re-appears after program is launched and I can continue working in that Terminal. However, other Applications, such as Totem or Blackboard will launch from the Terminal but the Prompt does not re-appear. Where Totem is concerned I get a message stating "sha module is deprecated use hashlib module instead". Where Blackboard is concerned the command line does not reappear. I have to use Ctrl + C to get the command line back but this closes the application as well! Or, I have to open a new Terminal. why some applications will start from the command line and others do not? How do you get the prompt back (other than q or Ctrl + c) thanks to all and kindest regards ( I am using Ubuntu 9.04)

However, I do my actual work on Linux, which the computing services department at the university where I work has not set up a sslvpn connection method for.I got the JRE set up on Linux and loaded up the sslvpn connection when I was asked for my sudo password. After following some other instructions, I created a different password to act as root.I entered that password over and over again and now I'm not able to attempt to connect again by trying another password.

A directory /test/test1 is created & under /test1 there are some files & subdirectories with data in it. I had copied the files (text & script files) with command as,
cp -irv /test/test1/.* /test as per the requirement but what i see in destinarion i.e, /test that no files or directory has been copied in /test & the files/directories is also removed from source i.e, /test/test1
so my query is how can i get the files/directories back with data?
My first post here. I've been using Ubuntu Server edition (Hardy) happily for some time now. I use sudo regularly during configuration of new services. It always works/authorises within seconds, however, it recently became very slow, to the point of being nearly unusable. It turns out that ANY authentication request stalls in this way - in in a plain shell, X or Gnome, via VNC (and even FTP seems affected). In /var/log/auth.log I noticed a regular working pattern like this:

Unfortunately now, these records look the same, but the timestamps are much wider apart (minutes). The problem occured after running synaptic and dpkg-reconfigure obm-conf. I was trying to remove 'OBM' [URL] completely as I'd messed up (just OBM) while trying to fix a minor-looking misconfiguration.
I've carefully analysed which files were altered (modified) during my changes (as the problem survives a reboot), but there are no likely-looking candidates in the list (I deleted some blank lock files). I also did a wireshark capture during an authentication session and noticed that it doesn't appear to be looking off the server for information (I had likewise-open installed, but the problem exists whether that is running or not). Research in the forums hinted that this might just be as simple as a bad /etc/hosts file - but /etc/hosts has not been modified. I may have a flawed DNS, but I get fast enough responses to nslookup and can access Internet etc.
I am having a few issues related to the RPM command. I think something is wrong with the database. Here is what has happen. I had open office installed, I heard about the fork and decided I would install LibreOffice . I uninstalled open office but left the shared libs. I downloaded the new beta release that is out and used the rpm files to install. In the process of installing the menu links I ran into a few conflicts related to dependencies. So I removed the rest of the open office libraries. Now if I try to launch LibreOffice I get a message saying that it can't find it. If I try and do a reinstall with the RPM files I get a message saying that it is already installed. example below:

I was moving a folder using Nautilus from an internal drive to a USB drive when suddenly, the power failed and the system rebooted before the UPS could go into backup. After I booted the PC again, half the files are are in neither of the drives. Do they go into a temporary folder first? There's nothing in /tmp and there's no Lost+Found folder. Is there anyway to get back those files? I'll always copy and delete from now on instead of moving.

It's installed properly the second time and almost does what I want except that when I type 'convert' in the prompt it gives me '-bash: /usr/bin/convert: No such file or directory'
The actual location of convert is /usr/local/bin/convert How do I change it so the convert command is pointing to the right executable?
I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.4.1 on a Dell Dimension 4700 desktop.When connected to the network (jack in wall, no router), I normally navigate my intranet and the internet.But here's the issue: this particular Dell machine has an IP addresses that is radically different from all other machines connected to the same network.I have tried to edit etc/network/interfaces to force a different IP, but then I lose connectivity. I need this to follow the IP scheme of my intranet so I can set up a server that resolves by hostname. Is there anything wrong with the NIC or is this something that can be resolved via command line?

I have rebuilded some packages from source to enable some features not in place by default. I usually use /usr/local as prefix for rebuilded packages.Now I have a problem building some other applications. Make exits with error saying that there is no .la file for some libraries from rebuilded packages - and it tries to find this file with /usr prefix, not /usr/local.Of course, I can place link to .la file I need under /usr prefix, but this is not good. Is there any way to make system search for .la files under right prefix (which is right in .pc files for packages too, of course)?

VLC Player however detects the correct time duration. I tried two ways of mergen the mp3's and both have the same falsely result. - mp3wrap- catI currently fixed it by opening the mp3 in VLC player and converted it again to a mp3 file which resolved the issue at hand. However this is not a solution I would like to have, nor a answer to what is the cause of the problem.So my question is simple -- what is the issue with the mp3 file and why is Rhythmbox indicating a falsely time duration?
