General :: Show Command As It's Being Entered In Console Vim?
Jul 20, 2010
I'm in normal mode then I press "ayiw to yank a word into register a, gvim shows the "ayi as I type it near the bottom right corner. Is it possible to get this real-time display in console vim, if so how?
I was tired and went to delete a directory and its content and forgot to specify the directory name, i entered: rm * -R Now lost all what was in my home directory (((
I'm running PCLinuxOS with no other OS installed. Thought I'd have a go at chainloading. just for interests sake. So, I opened Konsole, entered su and entered my root password. The command line turned red so, I imagined all was well. But when I then keyed in '/boot/grub/.menu.lst' I was refused access.
F10 trying to key in static ip address. Have followed guidelines on turningoff NetworkManager and turning on network. i went to command line and did a couple of chkconfig things and entered ip address, with subnet. when i do ip addr show i see under eth0 inet 192.168.3.11/32 which is 255.255.255.0, i'm pretty sure. i do not see gateway. when i go to system/network get prompted to log into root, network config window opens. icheck eth0 and the subnet mask is 192.168.3.1, the gateway, which is in correctly, in the gateway slot, as well. i still can not ping to from my xp based multihomed router.
I'm aware I can do !commands but I'd like to somehow integrate a shell in vim. Or could I use screen and split the screen so that vim takes up say, half of the screen?
when I use e. g. cat file.txt | grep --color=tty "pattern" I get the pattern I search highlighted. When I want some more context around each hit, grep has the -A, -B and -C parameters. However, I want to display the whole file (or whatever command output) and highlight a certain pattern. Does such a highlight command or tool exist?
It used to be with (old) grub you could hit a function key and add a runlevel option to boot a console, but I don't know how to do this here, wanting not to edit the grub config file, as seems the only apparent option: I'm trying to boot into SimplyMepis where there is no rescue menu option, so need the prompt?
Which command will tell me whether a directory is a symbolic link or not? if it is a symbolic link, is there another command to show me which directories it is linked to?
I shutdown around 4 - 5 hours ago which would be around 14:00 to 15:00 time range. But as you can see there's no entry for it. Why? and how can i find when i last shutdown?
Code: last lyle pts/1 :0.0 Tue Jul 6 19:18 still logged in lyle :0 Tue Jul 6 19:15 still logged in lyle tty7 :0 Tue Jul 6 19:15 still logged in
Suppose I'm editing a file with vim. The file, a text file, contains line terninators which are line feeds (LF= 0x0a). It could also contain horizontal tabs (HT= 0x09) and some more non-printable chars (in fact, it could be corrupt and contain anything). Will vim let me see the location within the text of those chars (chars = characters) and what each of them is? I know there are such things as hexdump and the like but it would be nice for me to stay within the vim session.
i set up my panels so that i have a bottom panel (windows style) and i set it to autohide.
I'd like to be able to press the windows key (Super_L) to show it just like when you hover the mouse to the bottom of the screen.
so far i have been only able to set a keyboard shortcut to show the ubuntu menu... but it will only make the menu pop up while the panel remains hidden. :
I need this because im using a tablet pc and i want to be able to press the buttons on the panel
I have a Asus EEE PC 1005P which I installed a Command-line system on using the Alternate Installer CD of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. Altough I think this is a general linux and grub2 question. I do not have (or want) the X Window System installed. I want to change my console screen resolution (not inside X) to 1024x600. But it isn't reported when I use vbeinfo inside grub:
grub> vbeinfo VBE info: version: 3.0 OEM software rev: 1.0 total memory: 8128 KiB List of compatible video modes: Legend: P=Packed pixel, D=Direct color, mask/pos=R/G/B/reserved 0x112: 640 x 480 x 32 Direct, mask: 8/8/8/8 pos: 16/8/0/24
[Code]...
Does it mean I have the driver? how to set it to 1024 x 600 in grub2?
Is it possible to show the output of a command in xfce4-panel? Like you would do with Conky. The Xfce battery monitor consistently uses a bit of my CPU so I wish to run "acpi" (and work out a clever way to just show the percentage) every 5 or 10 minutes in the panel.
I have many folders with many subfolders. All I want it to get the folder name and the first subfolder. I tried using ls -R but this give me more than I want it. Let say I have:
This has to also show the line count. I can get it to show the files but not the line count. What is the single command used to identify only the matching count of all lines within files under the /etc directory that contain the word „HOST? List only the files with matches and suppress any error messages.
I just got a new laptop for work that dual boots with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10.Normally, I can use an sslvpn connection to log onto my office servers to transfer data back and forth through Windows. However, I do my actual work on Linux, which the computing services department at the university where I work has not set up a sslvpn connection method for.I got the JRE set up on Linux and loaded up the sslvpn connection when I was asked for my sudo password. After following some other instructions, I created a different password to act as root.I entered that password over and over again and now I'm not able to attempt to connect again by trying another password.
My first post here. I've been using Ubuntu Server edition (Hardy) happily for some time now. I use sudo regularly during configuration of new services. It always works/authorises within seconds, however, it recently became very slow, to the point of being nearly unusable. It turns out that ANY authentication request stalls in this way - in in a plain shell, X or Gnome, via VNC (and even FTP seems affected). In /var/log/auth.log I noticed a regular working pattern like this:
[Code].....
Unfortunately now, these records look the same, but the timestamps are much wider apart (minutes). The problem occured after running synaptic and dpkg-reconfigure obm-conf. I was trying to remove 'OBM' [URL] completely as I'd messed up (just OBM) while trying to fix a minor-looking misconfiguration.
I've carefully analysed which files were altered (modified) during my changes (as the problem survives a reboot), but there are no likely-looking candidates in the list (I deleted some blank lock files). I also did a wireshark capture during an authentication session and noticed that it doesn't appear to be looking off the server for information (I had likewise-open installed, but the problem exists whether that is running or not). Research in the forums hinted that this might just be as simple as a bad /etc/hosts file - but /etc/hosts has not been modified. I may have a flawed DNS, but I get fast enough responses to nslookup and can access Internet etc.
I configured it to use IMAP to access our exchange 2010 server front end on a LAN connection. Our webmail connection is segregated behind Forefront, so it was not connecting/authing that way. Even though smartphones have no problem. (sidenote, is there an activesync linux mail client ?)
I have many root folders and several folders underneath my inbox. total mailsize in inbox is 3.5 GB without subfolders. The sent is likewise as large. And is likewise empty.
Things I checked already: View is all Folder subscription is on and local copy is on
More info: Thunderbird worky fine. But thunderbird is missing calender Tried adding lightening, but it won't add into thunderbird. Will try finding a diff add on, or if anyone knows how to get lightening into thunderbird 3.1.8 on ubuntu 10 that would be great as well.
1). What is the console command to scan all of Fedora, not just a specific directory, but the entire computer?
2). Even tho I have consulted the CLAM AV site on how to update to the latest virus signature database, I don't either understand what they are telling me to do, or I am not "getting" how to do it.
