General :: Effect Of Changing UID And GID In Unix?
Feb 11, 2011
I have Solaris at my workplace. Currently Esm was configured. It's listing conflicting configurations against policy standards. Few of them are like usrid's/guid's of users are below 100 so I am planning to change it above 100. For eg. I have ops id for an operations team.If I change uid and group id of this particular user/group, do I have to just find files of that particular users/groups ownership and change it accordingly.Or else something elese I have to do. Will it affect any running applications owned by user/group whose ID I am going to change. Also there are few ids owned by applications whose secondary gid is 0, how do I proceed with those, as its very risky to change in prod environment.
I have upgraded to 10.4 and and after try to install mac look in ubuntu. My screen start flickering, I found it this due to in system => preference => appearance => effect become no effect automatically (as each and every time I select extra effect)After some time.for changing this setting i need to turn off the computer and restart then after i can do it i.e. change effect to extra effect. Its done after following installation
i recently purchased an i7 laptop and really don't want 8 cores on my bar. i remember there being a file that controlled this but i believe it wasn't writeable.
In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)
i got driver and when i install driver and reboot computer I got just terminal and when I type startx I get error FLGRX and sam log file or something like that.
instruction i found here but some comands didn't worked openSUSE Lizards
i have been using samba to gain access into windows computer through my pc which has fedora 8 ..can i access the unix machine from another unix machine? is yes then what is the procedures ?
I don't know if I saw this minimize effect in ubuntu but definitely have seen it on other nix systems. It's basically a little button in the menu bar that when clicked, "minimizes" the window so that only the menubar shows.how to get it working on ubuntu.
I have 2 Oracle users that generate .tmp files under /var/tmp. By default, the files have the permissions 644. Now, a need has arisen whereby the files created by these users have to have the permission bits as 664. Obviously, I changed the UMASK value for these users from 022 to 02. But the files are still getting created with 644 as the permission.
I tried restarting the application as I read that a relogin is required for the UMASK change to take effect. Even that hasn't helped.
drw-rw-rw- 2 owner developers 4096 Jun 24 15:13 models
these were set with
sudo chmod -R 0666 *
My user has developers as the primary group (the same group as the file), but I cannot access the directory via the terminal or ftp.
[myUser@machine]$ id myUser uid=503(myUser) gid=505(developers) groups=505(developers) $ cd models -bash: cd: models: Permission denied
I had the same problem before the directory belonged to my group, and I even went so far as to restart the server, without any luck. How do I set permissions to this directory so that I and other members of the group developers can access it?
My system (CentOs5.3) became erratic after i tried to change wholesale the ownership of the /FS. is it possible to change ownership or rwx permissions of files in linux? what is the safeguard available to preserve the consistency of the program files in linux against such an attempt by su?
desktop effect is disabled after reboot after reboot and go to : system->prefer->desktop effect , the box show the enable desktop effect button already clicked ! but no effect .i use F11 ,and the lspci shows:
I'm having problem in Ubuntu 10.04 in applying extra graphics effect.I thing I have done some wrong setting in compiz setting manager and now I'm not able to set to default.Whenever now I'm trying to apply extra effects from appearance window it shows Desktop effects could not be enabled.
I have pc/os linux 2009 installed and I recently got the following message while trying to boot up my system:
*checking root file system...fsck 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009) dev/sda1 contains a file system with errors, check forced. /dev/sda1:Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list found. /dev/sda1:Unexpected inconsistency;run fsck manually. (i.e., without -a or -p options) fsck died with exit status 4
*An automatic file system check (fsck) of the root filesystem failed. A manual fsck must be performed, then the system restarted. The fsck should be performed in maintenance mode with the root filesystem mounted in read-only mode.
*The root filesystem is currently mounted in read-only mode. A maintenance shell will now be started. after performing system maintenance press Control-D to terminate the maintenance shell and restart the system.
Give root password for maintenance:
The problem is, when I enter my password I get an incorrect password prompt. How can I change my password so that a manual fsck can start? Why did this message error message appear in the first place?
I tried to run % mvdir earlier and it said command not found. I then ran a search for it and still not found. Is there a place I can download the script for the command, and is there any information I should know post-download to get it to work?
I wonder if the unix commands (cp, mv, grep, args etc) are the same for Mac and Ubuntu. Do they have the same parameter lists and so on or do they try to stay the same but are slightly different?
What Linux or Unix version underlies Mac OS, OS X 10.6? Is there a good documentation for that version, specifically regarding security, networks and similar topics?
I want to code some simple personal projects on the Unix-like partition while doing everything else on my XP partition. Can someone recommend the solution that takes up the smallest footprint in size and processing power that still delivers value? I want to learn how to code in a Unix environment.
I'm trying Cygwin but my first impression is its a bit clumsy. Would a dual boot with BeOS be better? And how would I do it? EDIT: I need to be able to run both OS'es at the same time. This is very important for me. my laptop is pretty crappy and that's why I ask for something that has a low CPU/RAM footprint.
I have an NCR UNIX hard disk I need to mount it on a Linux box The FS Type in fdisk on linux is '63' for the partition How can i mount on my linux box ? what is kernel module i needed ?
i am now running Slitaz 2.0 and i would like to know how to run windows applications on my system. My OS didnt come with this wine ive been hearing about so i dont know what do do.
