Jun 6, 2010What GNOME does with pendrives does surprise me. It not only umounts the partitions, but also shuts the device down and turns off the power light. How do I achieve the same effect with CLI? I've tried eject but it does not cut power.

The same effect can be seen when browsing the results in duckduckgo.com. Is there a way in the Firefox userContents.css to stop these rollover effects?

Dec 18, 2010About a week ago I did a fresh install of Maverick on somebody else's laptop. Everything was fine at first, but a couple of days ago the person contacted me saying that they weren't able to move or resize windows anymore. (The only thing that does work with respect to moving a window is initializing the action by pressing Alt+F7.) Later we found out that they also can't drag and drop files or use the mouse to drag scrollbars up and down. So basically, they can't do anything that is usually done by holding down the left mouse button and moving the pointer. I've already tried the following things to make it work again:
- playing around with the mouse settings
- checking in CCSM whether the 'move window' and 'resize window' plugins were enabled
- setting desktop effects to NONE in the visual effects tab in 'appearance'
- using compiz fusion icon to (1) reload window manager and (2) switch from compiz to metacity for window management
- deleting folders containing GNOME settings from home folder (.gconf, .gconfd, .gnome2, .gnome2_private), logging out and back in afterwards to automatically create new configuration files
I've been doing a lot of googling about this but I'm running out of ideas. Most people (there don't seem to be that many) that have had a similar problem are saying that it's got something to do with compiz, and disabling it solved the problem for most of them. But in my case - no dice.

When I'm at work I don't need to type in a password, but at home each time I need to type in my password each time I do a CVS update. I've followed the instructions here on how to set up a passwordless public/private ssh key pair: [URL].. However, after that I still need to type in my ssh password each time I do CVS update (or anything CVS related) from my local computer.

May 2, 2010I've used WinSplit Revolution for quite some time on Windows and have become attached to it.I'm now trying out a Linux OS (Ubuntu 10.04) and would really like to get the same functionality back again.After searching on the net I found a "grid" plugin for compiz which says that it was inspired by WinSplit revolution.
I haven't installed the Grid plugin yet, because under the install section on that page, it says "Note that grid is now included in compiz so you're unlikely to need to fetch from git unless you've an old version of compiz", which would seem to suggest that the grid functionality has now been built into compiz somewhere. The thing is, I don't know where to find it in the CompizConfig Settings Manager nor how to set it up. All I want to have happen is that I get identical functionality to WinSplit revolution, where I press Ctrl + Alt + [some numpad key] to position a window on a screen and press Ctrl + Alt + [left or right arrow] to shift a window between dual screens.

Few of them are like usrid's/guid's of users are below 100 so I am planning to change it above 100. For eg. I have ops id for an operations team.If I change uid and group id of this particular user/group, do I have to just find files of that particular users/groups ownership and change it accordingly.Or else something elese I have to do. Will it affect any running applications owned by user/group whose ID I am going to change. Also there are few ids owned by applications whose secondary gid is 0, how do I proceed with those, as its very risky to change in prod environment.

Dec 28, 2009I have 2 Oracle users that generate .tmp files under /var/tmp. By default, the files have the permissions 644. Now, a need has arisen whereby the files created by these users have to have the permission bits as 664. Obviously, I changed the UMASK value for these users from 022 to 02. But the files are still getting created with 644 as the permission.
I tried restarting the application as I read that a relogin is required for the UMASK change to take effect. Even that hasn't helped.

these were set with
sudo chmod -R 0666 *
My user has developers as the primary group (the same group as the file), but I cannot access the directory via the terminal or ftp.
[myUser@machine]$ id myUser
uid=503(myUser) gid=505(developers) groups=505(developers)
$ cd models
-bash: cd: models: Permission denied
I had the same problem before the directory belonged to my group, and I even went so far as to restart the server, without any luck. How do I set permissions to this directory so that I and other members of the group developers can access it?

The problem is, when I enter my password I get an incorrect password prompt. How can I change my password so that a manual fsck can start? Why did this message error message appear in the first place?

1.mount a volume(or windows share, whatever) into a non empty folder
2.both the original content of the folder and the content of the newly mounted volume is accessible
3.updated and newly created files can be written to the mounted volume or the original folder determined by something like a switch at mount time
4.if files with same names exist both in the folder and on the volume, then which file to be presented to the OS is determined by their last modified date/time.
