So currently im attempting to resurect an old ibook with debian and ran accross an issue with the display after installing xorg. After researching I found a thread that posibly has exact same problem and seem to have found a solution with a modified xorg.conf (link included bellow for refrence). Any how I can realy use this fix yet because I dont seem to have access to download forum attachments.
To be more of a constructive post though, any other resources or information that can help me with this problem? Short of that post I have found very little other than just playing around with xorg.conf configurations Also while im at is there any recomendations for a lightweight window manager that would work well for this old system when I do fix this display problem? The labtop is 500 MHz with 64 megs of ram. My current plan is to install Xfce but im quite open to other recomendations. [URL]..

I've been working on getting Linux on this iBook I have. It's running fine HOWEVERThe screen is split up in a rather strange way.I've drawn a diagram, but I can't post it due to the fact I haven't made 15 posts yet.I have a full working desktop in the top left.About 2 inches of the right are just black, and I can't move my mouse over it.Under the address bar, there is a mysterious white line, that extends into the black.Under that, there is the top 2 inches of my desktop being shown again.

My laptop's been locking up in Linux (Ubuntu, Backtrack, Puppy) periodically for a while now. When it locked up, it was always immune to the magic of SysRq, which I thought might indicate a hardware problem. It became so bad that I had to stop using the laptop.
Today, when I turned it on and tried to boot into Fedora 12, I got the following error (just once, it just locked up at various points during the splash screen after this once):
double fault: 0000 [#1] SMP
last sysfs file:
CPU 0
odules linked in:
Pid: 1, co m: swapper Not ta nted 2.6.32.11-99.fc 2.x86_64 #VGN-T 250N
RIP: 0010:[<ff
All the seemingly missing letters were really missing, not my typos.
As you can see, kernel version is 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64 and my laptop is a Sony Vaio TZ 250N (Core 2 Duo ULV 1.2GHZ). Note that with the other remaining kernels from the updates, nothing ever happened other than the locking up. The core temperatures hover pretty high, about 55-60C peak but this is still below the critical temp. Memtest came up clean when the problem first started happening.

The machine I'm using has a PowerPC architecture so I'm somewhat limited to what flavors of Linux I can use and I don't want to go back to Mac OS 8.9. The HD is only 3.3 GB so I can't get both Debian and GNOME on it.

I've been trying to set up MintPPC on my girlfriend's old iBook. I started with the debian squeeze installation from a burned cd. Everything went fine and i booted into the new system.
No matter what I try to install I get that error, with different sectors each time. I can install .debs using dpkg just fine, I can compile source code. apt-get just won't work.I've been reading about this for hours, and the machine is currently running e2fsck -c on the main filesystem. It is a more or less never ending stream of those errors with a few that reference task_pio_intr rather than dma_intr thrown in for good measure.I've been reading for hours but I haven't found anything on the google or forums that matches my problem(or atleast not that I could understand).
From my research I've tried hdparm to change the DMA mode, slower and faster and no luck, removing the .bins in one of the apt folders, and reinstalling debian.I've read the posts I could find on here, and mostly the problem seemed to be intermittent for them. For me it is only when I use apt-get, and now apparently e2fsck(badblocks). It happens every single time with apt, I can't use it to install anything. But i've done plenty of other file operations without a bump.Any suggestions would be most welcome! Especially an in depth explanation of what that message means. I'm happy to do my own research and work, I just have no idea what's going on!

I need a Linux O.S. to double-boot with Win7 (already installed). It should be user-friendly, have a tv player (Myth TV?) already installed and as-far-as-possable already configured for my tv stick..Avermedia. Emphasis should be on multimedia..with good video decode/encode possabilities. I`m considering either Mythbuntu or Linux Mint.

I am currently using Windows Vista and Linux Ubuntu (I'm not 100% sure which version). However, whenever I start up my PC, I get greeted to the HP BIOS screen, and then after that, I get the Windows Bootloader. Now, this is where things get interesting:If, on the Windows Bootloader I select Microsoft Windows Vista, it loads Vista. If I select Ubuntu on the Windows Bootloader, I get treated to a second bootloader (I assume the Ubuntu Bootloader).I'm wanting to remove one of the bootloaders (keeping Vista as my primary OS, but still having access to Ubuntu in the bootloader). As a result of this, which bootloader should I remove, and how would I go about removing such bootloader?

I have a file like this:
Code:
I need to search it backwards for "notable line" strings AND the first numeric string preceding that line. I've discovered that it's easy to search backwards by tac file | grep pattern, but how to tell grep to continue searching from where the pattern was found? In short, I want to make the output of the example above into this:
Code:
Or I must use another tool, like awk or sed? If so, how do I do so?

the code:
#!/bin/bash

The only way I ran it is using the terminal even after I check the is it executable box.
Do I need to add any commands to make it execute by just clicking on it?

In bash I need to use some equivalent of double quotes inside double quotes (or the other way around.)I need to run the following statement to get the output of foo and store it in a variable while passing foo the $file which probably contains spaces.
Code:
variable=$(foo "$file")
The problem is that foo might return an empty string and if it does I need to catch it

I am trying to synchronize the content of the directory my_dir/ from /home to /backup. This directory contains a file which name has a double quote in it, such as to"to. Here is my rsync command:
rsync -Cazh /home/my_dir/ /backup/my_dir/
And I get the following message:
rsync: mkstemp "/backup/my_dir/.to"to.d93PZr" failed: Invalid argument (22)
For info, rsync works well when the synchronized filenames contain single quote, parenthesis and space. Thus, why is it bugging with a double quote?

I then need to do it again.

I've tried accessing directly via my computers IP but to of no avail. Is there a way I can use pscp or file zilla to ssh twice so I can transfer files?

I tried to move a file from my desktop to another folder; moving it was not allowed, for some reason. Neither was opening it and saving a new copy in the target folder. Would that be because the filename contains double (") quotation marks? Are they not allowed? The filename is Edit of Bob's "Lady Liberty" Article.doc. [Filename not enclosed in quotation marks here, to avoid confusion.]I just changed the double quotation marks to single quotation marks; that solved everything.

I am arthritic and I have considerable difficulty with a double click. I also have difficulty when using a mouse of moving the mouse as I select something (click the button) from whatever window I am working with and thereby selecting the wrong thing. To compensate for this difficulty, I use a Logitech trackball and program the center button to perform a double click with one stroke. I am currently struggling with Linux Mint 9 in my search for a Windows alternative. Is there any way to program my center button (scroll wheel) to perform a double click in this or any other Linux version? Alternatively, is there any way to program a keyboard key to perform a double mouse click with a single stroke? I do not want any multiple key combinations for this operation, I want something that works with a single click of one button.

I saw an article use the following cat command to create a new text file:$ cat > first.sh << ENDAnd then after press the 'return' buttion, a '>' sign appeared expecting you to input the content. If I type 'END' then the 'return' button, then a new text file is created with what I just typed...I'd like to know what's the differnece in just type:$ cat > first.shwithout the '<<' sign? What '<<' really means? I cannot find it's meaning anywere... seems it's not in the redirection section.

I want to watch a number of processes in "D" status repeatedly with following command:Code:# watch -n 1 'top -b -n 1 | awk '{if ($8 == "D") {print; count++} } END {print count}''but it didn't work. I also tried with double quote. Can I use 'watch' command is this case?PS: I know 'while' and 'sleep' can do the same but it is dirty workaround.

I need to find each line in a file which does NOT begin with a double quote (") and append that line to the previous line. I have been successful doing this using the following command:
cat filname.csv | sed -e :a -e '$!Ns/
[^"]//;ta -e 'P;D' > newfilename.csv
My issue is the substitution. As you would expect after the line is appended to the previous line the first character is removed. I need it to not be removed. I tried:
cat filname.csv | sed -e :a -e '$!Ns/
[^"]/&/;ta -e 'P;D' > newfilename.csv
but it just hangs.
Goal:
Input:
"line 1"
line 2
Output with existing sed command is:
line 1ine2
I need it to be line1line2.

I recently decided to build up a Linux computer with the following configuration:
- Motherboard : MSI KT4 Ultra
- CPU : Athlon XP 2000+
- RAM : Kingston ValueRAM (2 DIMMs, I put them in all possible arrangements)
I doubt other compoment details are relevant, but if you do think so, feel free to ask.
I installed Debian 5.05 on that machine ; it worked all fine.
However, given that my mobo would not support wake on lan (and that I needed it given that my goal was to build some sort of server), I searched for a new one that did, I then installed an ASRock K7S41GX.
Since doing so, I have not been able to boot Linux ; after doing some fixing on my part, I have come to the point where I have the very same error repeating times and times again every time I try to boot ; here's the error message I get and how I get to it.
GRUB loads like a charm, then Linux starts booting and stuff happens :
Checks filestystem, initrd and stuff (I actually don't understand that part, but it seems to work OK).
Where "########" stands for a series of eight hexa chars (I assme these might be memory adresses ?).
A few more details :
- The ########'s are NOT the same on each attempt to boot.
- When I try to reinstall Linux, I also got various error messages (Mosty "PANIC: attempted to kill init" or "PANIC: attempted to kill the idle task")
- Rescue mode fails the same way re-install does.
- For some reason I just can't explain I ONCE happened to manage to start the installer process, which unfortunately ended up hanging on "Detecting Network hardware". (I attempted to disable the onboard network device to no avail).

I have the following scenario that doesn't seem to work normally. I have a windows 7 pc from which I am using putty to connect to my other linux servers (all running redhat 5 and 6). So here is the scenario that works and one that does not work. And I'm trying to figure out the one that does not work. Scenario that works:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1.
echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0
I run xclock and I see it pop up on my windows 7 pc. I am using xming on windows 7 to help me populate the display from linux to windows. One that does not work:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1. Then from Linux_Server_1 I ssh into Linux_Server_2.
echo $DISPLAY
<no output>
I try to setup $DISPLAY with localhost:10.0 or 0.0 or even my windows 7 pc ip address:0.0 ....etc Then when I try to run xclock I doesn't work.
I get these error messages: Error: Can't open display: <ip of display>
Also as a side note all our Linux servers are sitting on one subnet. My pc is sitting on another subnet. I use vpn to connect to the subnet where the servers sit from my pc.
