I've just reinstalled Ubuntu and when I try to remove mounted drives from desktop with gconf-editor/apps/natilus/desktop it doesn't work. Mounted drives still show up.
View 1 RepliesI installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc.
Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders.
When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"
I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.
BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.
I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).
I'd like to remove the icons of my connected drives from my desktop, I've found some threads about it but nothing that seems to work for me on Ubuntu 10.

I unintentionally installed the 64-bit S13.1 when I wanted the 32-bit version - anybody notice the misleading text around the hole on the DVD? The 'Slackware 13.1 (amd64)' side is the 32-bit and the 'Slackware 13.1 (1386)' side is actually the 64-bit version. It fooled me, anyway, and after finding out how limited software choice was I spat the dummy and went back to 32 :/ But...with Desktop Settings>Activity set to 'Folder View' I now have this unwanted suffix added to my icons. Also, if I'm in my home directory via Dolphin and I create new folders they also appear out on the desktop!

How can I reset to the initial stage when i first installed?
I'm having trouble removing entries in gconf-editor (GUI).
I have searched everywhere: manpages, internets, forums, can't find anything related.
Here's the situation: I installed Avant Window Navigator and it naturally created entries in gconf-editor for interface, applets etc. The thing is that when I uninstalled it the entries are still there, and yes I have deleted the corresponding folders in home/.gconf/apps. Also did a search of my filesystem for awn, avant widow navigator, avant-window-navigator etc and nothing came up. Looked in /etc, nothing. Looked in /etc/gconf, also nothing.
I am running CentOS 5.4, which I am occasionally managing via VNC from windows machine. This all occured after one long VNC session although I can't confirm this was the real reason. I also must say that I've seen some posts from people that had the same problem, but not anything helpful. Here is what happens:
Even if I start the machine from scratch I get the following error messages just before the login prompt and type of session window shows:
COULDN'T RECOGNIZE THE IMAGE FILE FORMAT FOR THE FILE '/USR/SHARE/GDM/THEMES/TREEFLOWER/BACKGROUND.PNG
THERE WAS AN ERROR LOADING THE THEME AND THE DEFAULT THEME COULD NOT BE LOADED. ATEMPTING TO START THE STANDARD GREETER.
If I choose GNOME and login I get more errors (for every icon I guess) saying:
COULD NOT LOAD ICON. UNRECOGNIZED FILE FORMAT.
Desktop then loads but there is no background image (other backgrounds don't work either) and the icons are question marks. All the menus and programs work normally.
KDE on the other hand works normally with all visuals, so I assume there must be something wrong with GDE PNG library or something, maybe GDE corruption. If I make another user it's the same story.
Is there any risk to deleting program entries from gconf-editor? It's very busy with software I'veuninstalled, which makes it fractionally harder to find entries when I want to edit them.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. I can get to the option screen where I choose to either install or try without installing. When I choose either of these, my monitor shuts off, saying there is no signal. I've tried with a downloaded copy and an official disc from Canonical. Both end in the same result. So I went in to the 'other options' and checked the nomodeset, and then booted in. It worked and I was able to install. Install finished, I restarted, tried booting into the freshly install OS, and the monitor shuts off, again.
I can use all Ubuntu's up through 9.10, which works wonderfully. I suppose I could just stick with 9.10, but eventually it will be unsupported, right? I thought maybe my pc is just too old, but I run Windows 7 on a second hard drive and it works great.
I've even tried an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. I get the same issue. So I'm at a loss. I do wonder if it's my video card, but that doesn't make sense.

Motherboard: Asus
Processor: AMD FX-60 2.6 (939 socket)
Video Card: EVGA GT 240
I've had 10.04 installed with an HP/Asus motherboard of same socket(939). I had an Nvidia 7300GT video card installed.
clicking dosen't register on my desktop unless i am holding the super key, how can i fix this? It works on all progrmas and everything except on the desktop. I cant click icons, select with windowing, or drag the icons. right clicking still works normally. what should i do?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed avant-window-navigator and followed these instructions to remove gnome-panel from startup: URL...However I have since uninstalled AWN and now cannot get gnome-panel to load at startup.I think I have put my settings back where they should be -- looking at them in gconf-editor:
1. desktop > gnome > session, the required_components_list is [windowmanager,filemanager,panel]
2. desktop > gnome > session > required_components_list, the panel value is "gnome-panel"
Yet gnome-panel does not load at startup. Any ideas why?Clarification: I can get gnome-panel to load by listing it under Startup Applications, but I am curious why it won't load via the gconf settings.
My desktop is a Compaq CQ5110F. It's a dual boot system and Fedora 11 resides on sda3 of hard disk (WD 3200AAJS-6).Both suspend and hibernate don't work, but the symptoms are different. For hibernate, after resume, there are some messages (??) about register errors quickly flashed on the screen, then the logon window shows but the system hangs. For suspend, I cannot wake up the system by hitting some keys on the keyboard. After I press the power button, LCD doesn't get any signal. I remember hibernate worked when I was using Fedora10, but wireless card did not automatically reconnect at that time. Also hibernate works fine for vista.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently moved from Ubuntu Desktop to Ubuntu Server. I have a Dell D600 acting as a three prong firewall. I use a Netgear FA120 USB NIC for the third prong. After converting to Server, the NIC detects as Eth1. I'm able to configure an IP, but the NIC never sends or receives packets. The same NIC works great in Ubuntu Desktop. Dmesg never shows the NIC being ready.

Server IP: 192.168.1.42:5900
The remote desktop window just goes black and pops up a dialog saying connection closed every time.However VNC works fine as I installed xtightvncviewer as an alternative and that connects, and I can view the Win7 desktop and control it and do everything you would expect.
I've also tried connecting using Android VNC viewer from my phone on my LAN and that also works fine so it appears to be an issue with Remote Desktop Viewer.Incidentally using R.D.V. on Intrepid into a tightvnc server on my old XP box worked fine.
I would use Istanbul but it was made for the gnome desktop so it doesn't work. I'm using unity 11.04 natty.

Replace /usr/share/icons/LoginIcons/apps/64/computer.svg with your own svg
Change the gconf config setting /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/logo_icon_name to be the name of your icon in the theme. Then copy that file to the icon theme path: /usr/share/icons/LoginIcons/apps/64/.
I have gotten #1 and #2 to work. I am not sure how UbuntuTweak is actually doing it's magic (but would love to know). I do not like #2 as it seems messy and what not.
I can not get #3 to work. I have found post after post that says it should. I have tried editing the gconf DB in multiple ways:
gksu gconf-editor
gksu -u gdm gconf-editor
sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type string /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/logo_icon_name MYICONFILE
sudo gconftool-2 --set --type string /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/logo_icon_name MYICONFILE
And while all of those methods show that the value has been edited NONE of them actually change the icon (did a service gdm restart to check).
Given that:
The official docs state that this should work By replacing the computer.svg file it does work (so I know I am copying my file to the correct path)
I selected 'Fire' from the Desktop effects list and got an error message saying that it "could not be activated".Why? Does it conflict with another effect? Is there a way to fix this?
View 6 Replies View Relatedhow to go about getting Ubuntu to receive an ad-hoc wireless ICS enabled connection. The internet connection is shared through a virtual machine running XP (with the USB wireless dongle under XP's control), on my desktop PC, in order to escape my ISP's no NAT policy. Ubuntu is on both the desktop PC (the sender), and the laptop (the receiver). The desktop and laptop also run windows 7. I managed to get my laptop Ubuntu to connect to my virtual machine XP, by setting the IP, subnet and gateway of all wireless devices, as was suggested in [URL] - I did use the Network Manager GUI, but pinging the desktop doesn't work.
Even with the IP configuration, Windows 7 on the laptop receives the internet fine. The next step is getting Ubuntu to receive. I can do any kind of configuration in a virtual machine, such as install Ubuntu. In virtual machine XP I used 192.168.0.1 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 1.1.1.1. On the laptop Ubuntu 192.168.0.2 same everything else. I understand nothing about networks. I know there is stuff I can do in the console, but how will Network Manager cope with me doing that?
noticed that the button at the bottom left corner of the desktop doesn't work.It is supposed to hide everything on the desktop and when clicked again bring everything back.I was jacking around (learning) with Compiz yesterday, but not sure how that could affect it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just finished installing Ubuntu Studio in my machine and downloaded and installed the Nvidia drivers. I was so excited about using the desktop visual effects that I had seen in some advertising. But first, I just found 3 options in the Appearences config none, normal and extra. Where are desktop effects such as windows trasparence, the cube an others?
Second, and worst, I enabled the "extra" options and found its effects pleasant, but I could not use the for any longer because when I launch Rosegarden with desktop effects enabled, Rosegarden's title screen appears and after that its windows doesn't appear. I found out that the problem is enabling desktop effects because when they are disabled Rosegarden starts completely in few seconds. I even made a test and enabled effects, launched Rosegarden, wich of course dind't appear, after that disabled effects and Rosegarden's window imediately appeared. I use this software every day and it was the main reason why I migrated to Ubuntu. How can I use Rosegarden and visual effects as well?
PS: My PC has Pentium dual core with 2 x 1,88, 3GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS. My system is Ubuntu Studio 10.10 with Rosegarden 10.10 installed from [URL]
When either of the proprietary Nvidia drivers are enabled, viewing the desktop using a remote client (Windows TightVNC) does not work. The initial remote screen display is ok, but no updates to the remote display occur. Reverting back to the non-proprietary driver solves the problem. I have also tried using a 10.04 Live CD and used Remote Desktop Viewer on the client machine, and it behaves the same way.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was upgrade my PC's RAM to 4GiB on 32bit platform, the problem is when I set AGP appture size to 64 MiB suse was detect physical memory at 3.4 GiB but when I set AGP appture size to 32 MiB or lower physical memory was detected at 3.6 GiB but I can only boot with failsafe mode, desktop mode doesn't work and screen goes to blank and I want to use the whole 3.6 GiB.
