General :: DMA Timeout Error In Booting Up Tiny Core / Sort It?
Sep 8, 2010
I am trying to use Tiny Core as the OS for a fairly old embedded device using a Pentium 100 with 64MB Ram.
I managed to get the Tiny Core image loaded onto a 128MB CF card. When I turn the box on, it presents me the Grup screen and I can select the bootup option (tinycore). However, soon after I am getting a DMA Timeout Error.
Also in this link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ble-it-734489/
Now, I am not familiar with Tiny Core all that well, and neither am I sure of how to modify the initramfs to include: hdparm -d0 /dev/hdb.

I was using a friends laptop and decided to boot into an install of tinycore on a flash drive. This laptops battery is already pretty much shot because it is left plugged in all the time no matter what the use, and before I booted into it the level was at about 60%, which means about 40 minutes in windows. When I booted into tinycore, there was only about 10 minutes before it shutdown completely. I noticed the fans were on high and the air coming out was rather hot, but why does that happen?

I have just upgraded to 11.04 on my VirtualBox VM, and after I start it, it begins to load, but it stops at the line * Checking battery state... [ OK ]
I have tried the recovery mode, but to no avail. I can access the boot commands and the command line, but I have no idea what to do from either.
Before the above line, there is a highlighted line
* PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions
saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned

I've tried searching the forums / google and haven't been able to come up with anything... in Debian-based distros there's an option that can be set to allow boot concurrency so that multiple processor cores can be used for the boot process. Windows also has an option similar to this to specify how many processor cores to use for boot.
Is there an option for multi-core booting in Fedora?

I recently read in a forum that by default the Linux kernel only activates one of two cores in a dual core processor. Searching online gave one option to find out and that was the mpstat command. I therefore ran the command and got the following output. As the result says, it shows only 1 cpu. I was wondering what I could do to activate both cores in my machine, and whether doing so was going to cause me any problems.

I recently got a new external hdd and formatted it to clear off the preloaded software seagate loaded on it for windows users. Anyway it worked fine but I realized I didn't name the drive what I wanted and since the format didn't take long at all I figured I'd do it again and name it what i meant to.
This time a message popped up and said error formatting drive
I removed it and now when I connect it, it doesn't appear to mount at all.

I've a program that launches new processes, and wait for them to die before it exits. So, for example, my program is a process, and it launches 3 more processes, and when the 3 child processes end, it will exit.
As you see, at end of the example, the program used a total number of 4 processes.
1 - Now, I'm running this program in a CPU with 4 cores. This means that the program used each core for each process?
2 - How can I know which core the program used?

I have a PC104 running debian. I have 3 hard drives (in addition to the one booting) mounted in fstab by UUID. I use the options defaults,error=remount-ro. However, this means that when I boot with the hard drives not attached, I have to press Ctrl-D to bypass when the boot discovers the drives are missing. Is there a timeout commandoption I can add to fstab so that it automatically continues booting even if the hard drives are not attached? I could not find anything on a timeout command. (I tried adding timeout=1000 but no-random guess)

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

I have a windows 7 box and a debian 5.0 box connected to a linksys wrt300n router. I can access the linux box from windows 7 through ssh. I used to be able to access the linux box from outside the LAN, but when I was messing with the ssh port configuration (at least I think this was what happened), i lost my ability to connect. I tried writing a new sshd_config file so that it is much simpler:
Protocol 2
PasswordAuthentication no
UsePAM yes
I tried directly connecting the linux box to the internet to rule out a router firewall issue that i was missing. iptables -L yields nothing, as I have since rebooted the machine since messing with iptables rules. But still, when I try to ssh in from outside the LAN, I get a connection timeout error after a 10-15 second hang.

I get the following error when BOOTING up with Ubuntu 9.10 & in dmesg:
phy0: noise floor calibration timeout
I think it is also causing one of my USB Serial devices to work improperly.I tried changing all the hardware (laptop(motherboard etc.), USB Serial device, & USB hub) but that did not resolve the issue. My code was previously working on an older version of ubuntu (9.04).As I boot up (before any of my software is run), bytes are written to my USB Serial (FTDI SIO) device.I also tried this on a fresh install & it appears that some bytes are being written to the serial divice(20 x 2 character LCD) while it is booting upIs there a bug with Ubuntu 9.10?

Is the ubuntu keyserver broken? I am trying to install a package and every time I try to install the key I get a time out error.
apt-update give me
Code:
W: GPG error: [URL karmic Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 932062C9CD30EE56
Then if I try to install the key I get this?
Code:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys CD30EE56
Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /etc/apt/secring.gpg --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys CD30EE56
gpg: requesting key CD30EE56 from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: keyserver timed out
gpg: keyserver receive failed: keyserver error
Can I tell ubuntu not to bother with the key. I know the package is good and safe to install. I should be the one to judge if its ok to install not ubuntu.

for some reason, which I have exhausted all my thoughts upon..
I have mysql 5.0.77
I just made an amendment to the auto_increment_increment variable.. from 10 to 1
Gone to restart mysqld (im on redhat FYI) and get the error:
'Timeout error occurred trying to start MySQL Daemon.'
It fails to stop, and obviously fails to start.
I have included below my 'my.cnf' file but I cant see any issues with it, and can't for the life of me think why there is something wrong.
If I ever come across an issue, I don't tend to ask but instead try and figure it out (usually with success) but this time.. I just cannot get my head around it..

I have multiple computers set up in my home (self education on networking) with one used as the main machine, and the others set up as a variety of server types. The main machine is running Lucid, as gui based os. The others are all running the server version. NO Domain controller is installed, no DNS server is installed.
ALL of the server machines boot to a login prompt, allow user name and password entry, and then will fail to login with a timeout error. After anywhere from 8-15 tries, the login will eventually succeed. Error also occurs when logging in via ssh.

I was having a problem on my squid server whereby 1 website would timeout daily and return a nscd not found error: [url]....There may be other sites but this is the only one I know of. A selection of other sites still work correctly, which is the strange thing.I have found that by restarting the dns cache everything works again: /etc/init.d/nscd restart.I never know quite when this will timeout so it is not very good for people accessing that site on the server.
