View 1 RepliesI would like an old desktop box to use my laptop as a router to access the internet. Here is my setup:
I have one ethernet port in the side of my laptop which I want to use to get internet access to my desktop computer. The laptop is connected to the LAN via a wireless link. Both systems run Linux. The desktop autoconfigures itself using DHCP. The laptop is a Kubuntu system. I do not have any crossover cables, though wireshark on the laptop sees the DHCP requests from the desktop just fine, so I doubt that I need one.
What do I have to do to make this work?
I have configured my system to connect to a wireless network on bootup, but now every time I boot I have to wait and watch it connect (it outputs some dhcp connect stuff) which delays the boot process. is there any way to just initialize the script and then go on with the boot process instead of letting it output some pointless crap and waiting for it to end?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've configured a complete 9.10 system in a VM using VMware. It's a very slim install done from the mini.iso and simply logs in as a user, starts X using ICEwm, and launches the latest Citrix ICA client to attach to a server. It works great, but now I'd like to take this configured system and make a bootable CD from it. The goal is to make a CD for a lab of older Dell GX270s to boot into a simple student desktop for Microsoft Officeapplications and internet browsing.

My interest in Linux started in 99-ish, with Slackware, of course. I gave up on it because my English and computer skills weren't as good so I couldn't make ppp run After that I've tried Red Hat, Knoppix for experimenting mostly. More recently I've tried OpenSUSE and Ubuntu (which were somewhat strange and Windowsified) and then went back to Slackware because I've read and heard that this is what Linux should be.My current Linux "achievements" are compiling a kernel (2.6.34 now, from 2.6.29-6 stock) which made me learn why VESA console support and sky2 device driver are important Ummm, also running Samba and mediatomb and disabling PCMCIA and ACPI crap from init scripts.
After the latest reinstall of Slack, I downloaded the gcc 4.5 source, compiled it and installed it. So while browsing around with pkgtool, I noticed it still says gcc is 4.3.3 so I am planning on removing gcc with pkgtool (after compiling the source) and then, install it again. Which leads me to my question: how to uninstall a program I've installed via "make install" I vaguely recall few sources that also had "make uninstall" but I also tried it on something (I know "something" is really helpful) few days ago and it said there was no rule for 'uninstall'So, how do I uninstall stuff?Obviously reading what "make install" installs and erasing it manually will be a one albeit crude way of doing so.
My machine is a new Fedora Core 12 install. The install did not make an /etc/x11/xorg.conf file by default, which is odd. So, I want to change things with the display. But there's no "system-config-display" in /usr/bin. What's going on? Why wasn't this installed by default? I've had lots of other problems with X on this machine as well:
the 10x20 fonts were missing XFree86-Misc error messages whenever I start an xterm I also receive these warnings, intermittantly, when I create xterms:
Code:
Xlib: extension "XFree86-Misc" missing on display ":0.0".

With this many problems I want to know if there's something in general broken with X on FC12, or was that just my install, or what?

View 1 Replies View RelatedPackages installed with synaptic are usually well installed on your system (i.e. bin in /usr/bin/, etc.). However, when a software is not in the repo, I always wonder where I should install it, when everything comes together (i.e. /bin, /var, /man are all subfolders of the main folder of the software). For now, I've opted for /var/opt/ or /usr/share, but I'm not really sure this is a best practice... is there any guidelines on that?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI use this GUI app a lot when I was using Ubuntu. Very simple to use. I want to use it in my new Debian 7 xfce install. My understanding is that I would have to build a deb from source to allow me to use this app? If this is the case, what is the best (easiest) way to do this. I saw some videos in YouTube but I'm not sure if things have changed with the new Debian 7. I have never used Debian before so if possible, go easy on me...
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just updated from Fedora 8 to 10 to 11 today. When I run system-config-display I get the following message:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-display/xconf.py", line 33, in <module>
import rhpxl.monitor
ImportError: No module named rhpxl.monitor
If I comment out that line, the next one fails, and so on. I installed a newer package, 1.1.3-2.fc11, because I thought maybe the installer didn't put it on and that behaves the same. Why this won't run? I would desperately like to use my widescreen monitor and I'm hoping that 11 will finally support my intel graphics correctly.
I'm curious as to why system-config-services is not installed by default in Fedora 13. IMO it's a pretty important tool for managing a system. I checked the release notes but could not find any mention of its removal.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI looked around, but found no results that really matched and I would like to point out that I am fairly new to linux, so this may be a very obvious answer to some of you.I am running fc12.i686, installed from a disk in the back of a book for a class. No one else in my class is having this issue. When I select System > Administration > Network I am given this error: Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/system-config-network" (No such file or directory). I am not so new to not realize that this file is not there, which I confirmed with an "ls -a". My question is, is there any way that I can download and install that bin? Or perhaps replace/repair it with the disc? It was supposed to be in the original install and my have been, the only thing that I have done in the /usr/bin/ directory is I tried to install Java (6.22 I think it was), which told me it installed correctly but didn't work when I tried Minecraft.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter an upgrade (preupgrade) from Fedora 12 to 14, system-config-boot opens from the menu and displays the right information but does not change grub.conf. I have searched the forums and found nothing like this. It worked before the upgrade. I have forced a new install of system-config-boot. I can change grub.conf manually. There are no SElinux messages that I can find. It would be nice to get the gui working.
