Ubuntu Installation :: Copy A Configured System To CD?
Apr 7, 2010
I've configured a complete 9.10 system in a VM using VMware. It's a very slim install done from the mini.iso and simply logs in as a user, starts X using ICEwm, and launches the latest Citrix ICA client to attach to a server. It works great, but now I'd like to take this configured system and make a bootable CD from it. The goal is to make a CD for a lab of older Dell GX270s to boot into a simple student desktop for Microsoft Officeapplications and internet browsing.

I have a linux, it has installed packages.
How can I copy the entire linux with the MBR to other machine via Internet:
PC1+Linux1
PC2+Windows or Linux2
PC1+Linux1->Internet->PC2+Linux1
What if the owner of PC2 is new to Linux? Some easy way to do it with open source tools?
I know for dd and R-DriveImage. dd is free, R-DriveImage is commerical, not expensive. What I'm not sure is what hardware will have PC2. For example, the linux1 may not detect well the video card, so no graphic environment, the graphic environment will not run well.
This will save time to install manually all packages on the PC2, just a command and PC is ready

I have used gparted for backup of my system, but now I have RAID configured and gparted didn't recognize my drives: Disk /dev/md0 doesn't contain a valid partition table
I have 2x500Gb HDDs configured in RAID and primary and logical partitions set by LVM (on Debian lenny 5.03)
Code:
fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000cb4b9
[Code]...
What program can I use to make a backup of my installation into /dev/dm-1 (this drive is mounted as /home)?

I would like an old desktop box to use my laptop as a router to access the internet. Here is my setup:
I have one ethernet port in the side of my laptop which I want to use to get internet access to my desktop computer. The laptop is connected to the LAN via a wireless link. Both systems run Linux. The desktop autoconfigures itself using DHCP. The laptop is a Kubuntu system. I do not have any crossover cables, though wireshark on the laptop sees the DHCP requests from the desktop just fine, so I doubt that I need one.
What do I have to do to make this work?

I have configured my system to connect to a wireless network on bootup, but now every time I boot I have to wait and watch it connect (it outputs some dhcp connect stuff) which delays the boot process. is there any way to just initialize the script and then go on with the boot process instead of letting it output some pointless crap and waiting for it to end?

I just did an 11.04 install onto a thinkpad w520 with 16 GB RAM. free - m shows 3.5GB (as does top)
browsing help/forums it seems the 11.04 installer should have detected my RAM and installed the proper kernel.
everything functionally seems great, just missing most of my RAM. I went with 32 bit ubuntu because most people (including canonical on their download page), recommend it. I may move to 64 bit, but would like to solve this for 32 bit first.

I am trying to get Debian 6 to work on an hp Z400 - the problem is that it came with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 graphics card; there may be a driver for Linux, but it doesn't matter, because GRUB insists on switching to some sort of graphics mode and the screen just blanks and switches itself off. Is there any way to make sure during installation that GRUB gets configured to stay in character mode only?

all I wanted to get was the "rss-glx"-package as additional screensavers. I am not proud of the results:So I used the Synaptic tool, and since that time the gnome-screensaver shows a black screen instead of any GL-animation in the preview-windows (the small and the big one). The simple screensavers still work (e.g. the Gnome feets).I propably made it worse when trying to uninstall gnome-screensaver and installing xscreensaverxscreensaver crashed on each preview (if the screensaver was installed) and printed an "exited abnormally" (yellow lines on a black screen). Then I was trying to get the original state back - without any "rss-glx".Still not succeeding, the GL-screensavers show nothing except a black screen (e.g. AntSpotLight). So what do I have to do to get back the original state (or to run rss-glx)

I just installed Debian 5.0.4 successfully. I want to use the PC as a File Server with two Drives configured as a RAID 1 device. Everything with the RAID device works fine, the only question I have belogs to the GRUB 0.97 Booloader. I would like to be able to boot my Server even if one of the disks fail or the filesystem containing the OS becomes corrupt, so I configured only the data partitions to be a RAID 1 device, so on the second disk should be a copy of the last stable installation, similar to this guide:[URL]...

Just installed the LXDE spin of 13 onto my acer aspire netbook. Couldn't make a usb boot stick, finally succeeded with an external card reader and unetbootin. Anyway, GXine isn't working, though it says its configured correctly. I'm very new to fedora and linux in general, played a bit with ubuntu 9.10.

I've been trying to update Fedora 15 for weeks. I always end up with a transaction error and the update stalls. The error reads: GPG keys listed for RPM Fusion for Fedora Rawhide-free repository are installed but they are not correct for this package. Check that the correct key urls are configured for this repository.
This is far too involved for a linux newbie, I think my only option is to reformat and reinstall. This is so frustrating, there are 250 MB of updates available that I can't access.

I am looking for a way to see if it is possible to copy the system state of a system to another system. Is it possible to simply move the folder structure over to another machine, and have it work? Do I need any special partitions for /var, /home, etc?My machine is dying slowly, and I really want the quickest way to migrate the system over to the new system.

I am trying to copy /var directory in a server to another sysem using scp. Although the total size is around 6GB, the copied folder's size exceeds 80 GB or so. I am not sure what's going wrong, but I am suspecting that the directory contains some shortcut or symbolic link, and while using scp that directory is also getting copied. Also it would help if i can see the complete path of files getting copied instead of just file name that's getting copied. Is there any option in scp to do so (Display complete path of files).

I have a newly installed Dell Optiplex 755 with Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit) and I am having serious issues with network copying. Whenever I start rsync och scp with larger amounts of data my system becomes practically unresponsive (all types of apps grey out) until those processes are completed. Cpu stays at below 10% and I have lots of free memory and such .

Every time I install ubuntu I have to reinstall all the software from the software center and so. Now I already installed all software I need for this moment. Is there a way to take source files of those (installed) packages and save them some where else in order to reinstall them if i needed next time without need to INTERNET connection ???
Another question I wanna know about: How can I take a backup of my system as whole in order to get back to it if some problem happened. I used to use Acronis True Image and its alternatives to make a disk image. Is there is some thing similar in linux ?? is there better options ??

So I wanted to copy a copy-prod disk and decided to try dd after reading some information about it. after running dd for about a minute, I got a warning that I was low on disk space. I stopped dd and found I had only 200 MB left of 200 GB free space (originally having over 220 free). I deleted the 1/2 finished backups but cannot find the data which was written to the drive. It is hard to think that that much data could be written with my slow pc in under one minute.here are the commands I performed if that helps locate the data:
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/mnt/disk/home/mark/pccheck.iso
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/pccheck.iso
sudo dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/pccheck2.iso

I am setting up a mail server on debian. Once it's done, I'd like to have an indentical server on another machine, where debian will also be installed. The solution has to be hardware agnostic, so source machine is different than destination machine. I was reading on some wiki page that one can simply copy the root filesystem via rsync to the computer that he'd like to install the system on, then chroot to it and test if everything works. I'm guessing I'd have to change a couple things before, like :
- The network config
- The /etc/fstab file (disks and partitions may be different)
This article is about using rsync to transfer a copy of your "/" tree, excluding a few select folders. This approach is considered to be better than disk cloning with dd since it allows for a different size, partition table and filesystem to be used, and better than copying with cp -a as well, because it allows greater control over file permissions, attributes, Access Control Lists (ACLs) and extended attributes. I want to copy a file (home/remote_computer_user/Desktop/test1.txt) from my remote office computer (a permanent URL + open port) to my home computer (home/home_computer_user/Downloads/).
How can I do this with shell commands in Linux?
My current thoughts:
ssh <user>@<computer1address> -p <port> - gives me a shell on the remote computer
(I think I should use scp, but I dont how exactly how in my case)
What are the exact commands I should use?

I am running some Pcap files through editcap and then tshark. I am running fedora 11. This will create a couple of thousand text files all numbered sequentially 1-x. How can I copy these files across a network(I connect using putty) or how can I copy them onto an external HD so that when I view them on the windows machine they have the right formatting (Windows know to open them with wordpad/notepad) basically that windows knows that they are text?
