Apr 7, 2010I have a dell inspiron 3800 that I decided to fix up for my son and he prefers Windows (some of his games won't work in wine) so I put windows on it and it's working alright but I get the following error on startup: Manufacturing Mode Level 01 Press fn-x to return the system to normal operating mode and then it starts fine.

Jan 15, 2011For some reason or the other, after some time the graphics on my computer becomes distorted. I had this issue before reinstalling my operating system, I thought that reinstalling the operating system would fix these issues, but they still remain.
Also, I never encountered this issue before upgrading from openSUSE 11.2 to openSUSE 11.3. Of course, restarting my computer fixes this issue.

Mar 21, 2011I have just bought a new PC, which uses the integrated graphics built into the motherboard rather than a graphics card. I have also installed Suse 11.4, but have been disappointed by the inability to obtain good graphics when either using archived tv programmes or streaming tv. For example, when using the BBC's iplayer, I can get a good picture only when the screen is not maximised. If I maximise the image then the sound continues, but the picture freezes. On my old computer, using 11.1, this was not the case, since I got a good picture in either basic or maximised mode. I'm guessing I might need a graphics card, but thought I would ask your opinion first.

Apr 20, 2010I am using KMS with a radeon 3650, KMS with kernel 2.6.33.2, xf86-video-ati 6.13.0 and mesa 7.7I am using fluxbox, and only have one transparent terminal running. I have not been playing any games(so no 3d acceleration?).My computer is getting far too hot from this. Not overheating to the point it shuts down, but the fan is going full bore, and mplayer stutters when playing a movie.This never happened when I was not using KMS, so it seems likely that that is the cause. It is definitely related to graphics, because when I exit X the temperature cools rapidly.Is this just because KMS is new and still being worked out, or is it something that can possibly be fixed?

May 3, 2010Yesterday I updated my computer from 9.10 to 10.04. When I restarted my computer it appeared this message:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.
(EE) No devices detected.
After that, it comes a window with the question "What would you like to do?" and 5 options...
Run UBUNTU in low-graphics mode.
Reconfigure graphics.
Troubleshoot the error.
Exit to console login.
Restart X
I'm going now with the first option, because I used to reconfigure graphics but my computer freezes with no aparent reason in the login window. I have a HP Pavilion 7956.
General :: Make PCI-E Graphics Card Visible To Ubuntu When The Motherboard Has Integrated Graphics?
May 2, 2010I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says

There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power.It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector.The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?
Fedora Installation :: After Installing Graphics Drivers Computer Not Booting Into 14
Jan 22, 2011I recently switched my primary desktop over from Windows 7 to Fedora 14. I successfully installed the OS on to my hard drive and booted up, following which I installed all of the updates and rebooted. After my first reboot I downloaded the 10.11 Radeon driver and installed it (because the 10.12 was having an md5 hash issue), the install was (supposedly) successful, but when I restarted my computer it first progresses to this screen (copied from softpedia) and then goes black for a second, and then returns to that screen and halts at the end of the progess bar and does nothing. I am looking for help to get back into my system.

May 31, 2010I have recently been experiencing some issues with the powersave on my computer. I had my computer set to put the display to sleep after 10 minutes and put the computer to sleep after 30 minutes. The screen saver also activates at 5 minutes. When I woke up my computer (hit the power button) the computer would sometimes tell me that it was going into low graphics mode. I had to reboot to get my x server back. I disabled the power save to fix the problem, but I would really like to have it back. My latest Xorg.log gives an error, but I'm not sure if the power save caused the problem (more below). I am running a computer with an Intel Integrated chipset.My questions:

Ubuntu :: Unreadable Files In /dev - Computer To Freeze: Graphics Driver Or Gnome Or The X Server?
Jun 9, 2011Basically, this has required me to force restart my computer whenever something causes my computer to freeze: graphics driver or gnome, or the X server, I'm a newbie so I don't really know what the problem is.
I looked into the /dev folder today to find nvidia0 (I saw an error message once that said that it couldn't open it...), and there were TONS of files marked as unreadable/unknown file type. There were files called tty up to 63, ram up to 15, and vcsa up to vcsa7...etc. I saw this thread when I googled my problem, and I'm worried about the effect all these force restarts are having on my computer. I can't imagine this is a good thing, how do I stop/fix this?
Come to think of it, I didn't start seeing the 'blue mist' mentioned in my other thread until I force restarted the graphically demanding program that froze everything. Could this be the source of my problem?

Jun 23, 2010I'm using squeeze. I wanted to know how you could determine from the command line in tty1 (or tty2 through tty6) what the resolution was that text was being displayed at. Is there a way? I know that in grub, you're supposed to be able to go to the command line and type vbeinfo. I tried this and got some information, but somehow I think it doesn't always apply to the terminal after the computer has booted up.

Apr 17, 2009I boot linux from a usb drive so I can carry my distro wherever I go - I've been doing it for quite some time now and it's always worked wonderfully. Problem: This morning my little cousin unplugged the computer WHILE I was booting into linux. Power loss has happened before, but with no ill effects. This time however, it's decided it won't boot. The screen clears, and just as GRUB is about to load, it freezes and the computer reboots over and over.
I booted to a LiveCD of Ubuntu to try and fsck the drive, but it won't mount the volume. I've worked with this install so long, and have customized it so much I **really** don't want to do a reinstall.. What can I do?
General :: Moving Data From Computer To Windows Computer
Jun 28, 2011I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network.My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: NVIDIA Graphics Driver - Graphics Mode Option Via The Start (GRUB)?
Jan 26, 2010I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

May 28, 2011I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

General :: Ubuntu - 3 Monitor PCI-e Graphics Card?
Jan 4, 2011the only way to get multiple monitors AND compositing (Compiz) on Linux is to use a single graphics card that can drive both (or in my case all three) screens. I bought a Radeon 5750 specifically because it claims to able to drive 3 monitors. I can plug in 3 monitors (2 DVI, 1 HDMI) and the Catalyst Control Center shows all 3, but only 2 can be enabled at a time.
The exact message is:
The current settings cannot be applied. Possible issues may include:
- Display(s) cannot be enabled.
- Setting(s) cannot be applied due to insufficient video memory.
So I'm going to assume that either the 5750 doesn't support 3 monitors, OR, more likely, ATI couldn't be bothered to add that support to their Linux drivers. So this is a multipart question:
First, can anyone suggest a PCI Express Graphics card that can run 3 screens on linux without tremendous pain? I'm looking for something where you install the driver and all three screens "just work". Does such a card exist? Second, if you have a 5750, have you been able to get it to do 3 monitors? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 at the moment. UPDATE: I got my active adapter in the mail today (it's DisplayPort to DVI) and so far things seem to be better. I can run my third screen, drag things seamlessly between them, and I am also running compiz. The adapter I'm using is a "B087B-005B" made by "Accell", UPC is "826388106239".
There's still a couple "annoyances" that need worked out though: The left most screen is always the primary monitor. Which means the "gnome bar" (is that what you call the applications-places-system menu?) is always on the left most screen. It also means that new dialogue boxes always opened centred on the left screen, which is counter intuitive. Especially if you're using a program like GIMP and the text editor or color picker pops up on the left. Does anyone know of a way to change it so that new windows always pop up on the center screen?
