General :: Command Not Found For All But PWD And Echo - Path Empty

I logged into my Red Hat Enterprise Linux machine at work (use it for software development) and the primary GUI does not load. Instead, widgets appeared for xclock, xterm, and Firefox. In the terminal, I start typing in commands to try to figure out what's going on, but all commands are not found except pwd and echo. I 'echo $PATH' and that returns just an empty, blank line. 'echo $SHELL' lets me know I'm using cash.
The likely cause was my attempt to install Adobe Reader Firefox plugin yesterday. After it downloaded, I ran the binary but Firefox didn't seem to recognize that I had installed it, so I went into my .cshrc file and added the adobe folder to the path. That didn't seem to work, so I gave up, deleted the binary and the folder I installed to, and removed that directory from the path in the .cshrc file. This last thing (the export PATH line in that file) I'm certain is back exactly as it was before.
I have successfully added the /bin and /usr/bin back to the path from command line via
setenv PATH /usr/bin:/bin
but of course it doesn't stick after reboot nor does it magically load the primary GUI. I'd rather not go through the effort of creating a ticket for our company's Global Service Desk cuz there's no telling how long that could take to resolve. In the meantime, I can't do any programming.
Can any body tell me where can i found the source code for echo command. so that i can download it such that it can help me for further studies on echo command
I am using CentOS5.5 & everytime it is showing command not found. If I export the path as below it will be working fine until a reboot. Again same error i.e command not found if I open new terminal. Every time I am exporting as below:
How can I set these permanently as that the paths should automatically be exported for everyone user whenever the system boots. And command completion also should happen for eg. #fdi (press tab), then it should show available options such as fdisk, etc.

Bash acts weird in 10.04 server. Whenever I try to run .sh scripts, every empty line in the script results in "command not found". How can i enable caps lock by using echo command. I know that by using syntax echo -e "33[3q" this only turns the capslock led to glow. but the capslock is not working i.e. the words are typed in small case only.
Then by using xmodmap command i.e. syntax xmodmap -e "remove lock = Caps_Lock" or xmodmap -e "add lock =Caps_Lock" doesn't work. On running this it shows unable to display.

I'm using lucid on both my laptop and my desktop, both fully up to date. When I ssh from my laptop to my desktop, I get "PATH: command not found", and then a shell with no working path. I don't know enough about how bash starts up, or how ssh works, to figure it out.
Update - I've found .bash_profile, and commented out the first line, and now it works. I'd still like to sort this, though, so I don't have to keep commenting it in and out. The line is: export PATH=$(PATH):/usr/share/android-sdk/tools

This gives the desired outcome, but its specific, i need a variable in the sed not a string. And if I replace STRING="/mnt/sda1/record/$dd/" then I cant use it for something else, cause its has all the weird backslashes now.
i can download but i cant run anything because there is no ar file path for ark. please dont tell me to download something to get the ar file path because if i download it i can't open it
Simple question but even google does not come up with an answer, seems to be too easy that someone else asked it ;). Could anyone tell me what is the shell command to empty the garbage bin under Linux?
I am looking for a way to delete the currently entered commandline without wasting seconds on the "Backspace"-key.
For example I scrolled the bash history and have a long commandline that would execute when I pressed ENTER:
~$ aptitude search openssl | grep dev
But now I decide that I do not want to execute this command. Can I get an empty prompt fast without deleting the whole line with Backspace? On the Windows "cmd" you can just press ESCAPE and it is gone. This behavior would be what I want.
The question may seem trivial but this is bothering me for a long time now.
I am running a server which is hosting a site where members can upload videoclips. I noticed that upon upload a thumbnail is not created for the videoclip. I found out that ffmpeg needed to be properly installed and in my case ffmpeg-php as the site runs on php. So far so good. I followed the instructions found somewhere to install ffmpeg-php but stall at the command: dot slash configure && make The error I get is:

I presume it's because gcc is missing. how I can start tackling the problem and ultimately get gcc running so I can install the ffmpeg? I installed vbox and windowsXP as guest and fedora13 as host. I am testing the serial ports on a Single Board Computer(SBC) running Linux kernel 2.6.29. I usually do this by connecting the serial port to another PC serial port, then doing "cat /dev/ttyS0" on PC and "echo hello > /dev/ttyS0" on the SBC. However in the current system, "echo hello > /dev/ttyS0" command does not return at all! Also no characters appear on the destination port. I am running the echo command as root. The system boot messages show that the serial port in indeed /dev/ttyS0.

it could be very helpful (and decide my next move) to see the exit code as 0, 1, or 2 . the man page suggests the command exit code will specify if the message I get - "Cluster size is zero" (I think it is a "1")is a recoverable or fixable error by the utility. or is non-recoverable - a pretty nifty feature if I understand this right. I have a router with linux firmware and attached to it a USB modem with which I can do both data and voice.Any other command send through echo method works ok. I was able to send SMS, edit phonebook and many many other stuff, but not make a call.So what is different from sending the call command within Minicom 2.5 and echo it?
