I am having problems with symbolic links and the $PATH variable.I have a directory:# /usr/rulerX/squarewhere /usr/rulerX/square is a symbolic link such that:
# ls -la
square --> square.hg.current
My path variable is set as:

I can see some soft links in /etc directory which are pointing to /etc/rc.d Directory contents.

Found that RedHat Linux supports Context-Dependent Path Names in symbolic links using special reserved CDPN variables. Will it be possible to create a user-defined CDPN variable and use it in creating a symbolic link

View 2 Replies View RelatedI logged into my Red Hat Enterprise Linux machine at work (use it for software development) and the primary GUI does not load. Instead, widgets appeared for xclock, xterm, and Firefox. In the terminal, I start typing in commands to try to figure out what's going on, but all commands are not found except pwd and echo. I 'echo $PATH' and that returns just an empty, blank line. 'echo $SHELL' lets me know I'm using cash.
The likely cause was my attempt to install Adobe Reader Firefox plugin yesterday. After it downloaded, I ran the binary but Firefox didn't seem to recognize that I had installed it, so I went into my .cshrc file and added the adobe folder to the path. That didn't seem to work, so I gave up, deleted the binary and the folder I installed to, and removed that directory from the path in the .cshrc file. This last thing (the export PATH line in that file) I'm certain is back exactly as it was before.
I have successfully added the /bin and /usr/bin back to the path from command line via
setenv PATH /usr/bin:/bin
but of course it doesn't stick after reboot nor does it magically load the primary GUI. I'd rather not go through the effort of creating a ticket for our company's Global Service Desk cuz there's no telling how long that could take to resolve. In the meantime, I can't do any programming.
I am using CentOS5.5 & everytime it is showing command not found. If I export the path as below it will be working fine until a reboot. Again same error i.e command not found if I open new terminal. Every time I am exporting as below:
#export PATH=/sbin/:$PATH
#export PATH=/usr/sbin/:$PATH
#export PATH=/usr/bin/:$PATH
#export PATH=/bin/:$PATH
How can I set these permanently as that the paths should automatically be exported for everyone user whenever the system boots. And command completion also should happen for eg. #fdi (press tab), then it should show available options such as fdisk, etc.
wanted to knowIs there a command the root user can type in the command line to list & know all soft and hard links there are in a distro that is installed ?

export PATH=<my jre path>
now i have no bash commands - typing ls causes
-bash: ls: command not found
i think that i should re-export my PATH to the right value but i don't know what it should be. I tried differend values

As you can see, /usr/local/bin is in the path. However, bash does not look for nasm in /usr/local/bin.

I'm using lucid on both my laptop and my desktop, both fully up to date. When I ssh from my laptop to my desktop, I get "PATH: command not found", and then a shell with no working path. I don't know enough about how bash starts up, or how ssh works, to figure it out.
Update - I've found .bash_profile, and commented out the first line, and now it works. I'd still like to sort this, though, so I don't have to keep commenting it in and out. The line is: export PATH=$(PATH):/usr/share/android-sdk/tools
I have what I hope is a fairly simple question to answer. In my ~/.bashrc file I can create this alias:

alias umnt='umount /dev/$1' I realize the likely problem is the variable following hot on the heels of a specific directory, but is there anyway to specify a variable in an alias like this? For some reason I cannot umount usb pen drives by right clicking, and have to always resort to the terminal to do so, which for me is no real biggie, but if I could create this alias it would be an even better no biggie to umount using the terminal.
Actually, the inability to right click to umount usb devices seems to be a Thunar issue since I run xubuntu. Using Nautilus I am able to right click and eject/safely remove devices. Using Thunar however, right click unmount always pukes back an error that the device must have been mounted on the command line or some such BS. But like I said it is no real biggie to use terminal, but an alias would be even nicer. I prefer using Thunar and Xubu most of the time b/c my laptop is quite underpowered.

However, when I type in the links command, terminal returns the error 'bash: links: command not found'.
What package or library needs to be installed to get this command to work.

I am trying to create a file, that has a variable assigned to it, in another directory. For some reason when I run the script it creates the file only in my pwd and I cannot for the life of me figure out why.My pwd at the moment is Desktop but it does not matter as I have tried from elsewhere. I have tried the touch command in the following ways (some will be obviously incorrect but I was desperate)and many more as well as the original format listed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to clean up some files and I've been using the rename command as its the easiest way I've found to do it. One problem I've found is that on a couple of batches of files they have a set random numbers on them which I need to remove.
Only problem is I can't find a way for rename to "lock" onto those numbers to remove them. The file name structure is something like this:
file name[random numbers].extension
There are brackets around the numbers as well which I'm not sure will help or not.
I would like to run a bunch of SQL commands from mysql client in bash. However, I would like to store the output in different variables. E.g.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running a server which is hosting a site where members can upload videoclips. I noticed that upon upload a thumbnail is not created for the videoclip. I found out that ffmpeg needed to be properly installed and in my case ffmpeg-php as the site runs on php. So far so good. I followed the instructions found somewhere to install ffmpeg-php but stall at the command: dot slash configure && make The error I get is:
checking for egrep... grep -E

checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no

configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
I presume it's because gcc is missing. how I can start tackling the problem and ultimately get gcc running so I can install the ffmpeg? i have server with rhel3 ES. in folder "/lib64/tls" there is one file named libc.so.6 which is softlink of libc-2.3.2.so. i just copied libc-2.3.4.so from rhel4 AS server to rhel3 server in the same location and override the softlink libc.so.6 as a softlink of libc-2.3.4.so. now no any command is working in this server i.e.(cp,vi,rm mv ls etc.). it is also not opening any terminal and nothing command is working.

For example, I always go to this path:

but I don't want to type
cd
/user/something/somefolders/somewhere
in the terminal all the time, can I have some short hand to do so? for example, can I do something like
cd commandPlace
to replace the path?
