Can anyone answer me the color code of the linux file system?
Especially, for those which have different colors in the background also like some have green background colors and are written in green some have yellow background and are written in black,why is it so?
Also please explain me the color code of other also.
i have two doubts
1) i downloaded the latest linux kernel in hope that i will find the codes for the operating system the os but i cant locate any.so can any0ne tell me from where can i find what i am looking for?
2) c language used in the package i downloaded is though very close to the c i studied but there are places where it becomes tough for to comprehend the real significance of the lines. eg i never knew rhere is Display() a pre-defined function but i saw it somewhere as predefined.
I got some problems and need your help.
In school, my codes are writeen under UNIX system (Solaris10/SUN), now I need to transfer those codes to Linux (Redhat5). But after I directly copy to Linux, it shows many errors and warnings.
Does anyone know which codes I need to modify to specifily suit for UNIX? I am not familiar with those systems and hope to get your kind help.
I dual boot Opensuse and Windows 7.
Both OS install correct graphic driver.
But I find that windows 7 display better color than opensuse,
you can feel the different by eyes.
Why?
Is any one distribution of Linux, particularly suited for color management and printing? I have alot of photo printing to do that needs to be accurate color wise, I have already installed Open Suse with Gnome to try Linux, on an old machine and the printing although good, is very slow...
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo 2 days ago everything was all fine on my machine. Has been for about a month, but all of a sudden as of yesterday I have no sound, I am seeing IRQ interupts on boot, During boot I am seeing file system is not clean, , and swap space is being used for the first time while doing normal task, etc. These are 2 new hard drives in RAID 1 with ReiserFS. I should have used a newer FS but thats a whole other argument.
Anyways here we go.
The system is Debian Lenny amd64
Physical RAM 4GB + 6GB swap

I am getting occasional errors during the boot process.One at the beginning and one or two when I switch to single user mode.I 'd like to run the system file checker to fix any possible errors.But when I run fsck in the terminal I get the message:Code:

I'm a little bit confused with partitioning the filesystem in Linux. the difference between creating the file system with fdisk and mkfs (when formatting the disk). I can't clearly tell my problem, so please look at this picture:
View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.

Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).
My Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 with 6x partitions (/, /boot,/home, /usr, /var, /tmp) of 6.0 GB IDE Hardisk was working quite fine. I decided to create LVM on /home and /var partitions but due to some errors occured and I delete the /home partitions. That's why partition table altered. I then delete 4,5,and 6th partitions (/home, /var, /tmp) partitions and now try to create one by one but following error is coming:-

Have just assembled a new computer and thought I would install the 64 bit version of openSUSE 11.2 in a "Windows free zone". After a hiccup or two I have managed to get a system of sorts running but on trying to copy files from my old computer(via a memory stick) it tells me that Vfat is an unknown file system.On my old computer I am running 32 bit openSUSE 11.2 as a dual boot system with Windows XP and have no problems moving files between the two different file systems.Is it possible to get a 64 bit file system to read 32 bit file system drives and if so how do I do it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.
My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.
Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).
However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB

reducing the size of LVM. I did it by using the commands, lvreduce,fsck,resize2fs.After reducing the lvm size, my system is not booting...it is saying file system corrupted error.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI work for a company that makes portable devices running Linux and I was recently asked to make the underlying file system read-only for "security" purposes. Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
As in windows all the delted items will got to RecycleBin is there any such thing in linux.

Can we retrive the file which got removed from file system(using rm command)
I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.
I used the ext3 format when I formatted my partition prior to installing Ubuntu10.10. I had accidentally deleted a file and began the process to get it back. It wasn't critical but helpful to recover the file. To make a long story short I ran into to some unexpected road blocks. I tried to use PhotoRec to get the job done but with no success.
I'm just looking down the road in the event I might have to recover something important.If it would be better going back to the Fat32 file system I would rather do it sooner than later. Just as a side note I am dual booting between linux and windows.
My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3
i've begun studying LPI 101.i came across the following which describes hard links.."hard links do not span file systems. this means they cannot create a link from /usr/bin/bash to /bin/bash if your / and /usr directories exist on seperate file systems"i need clarification on the following:1. under what circumstances will / and /usr directories exist on separate file systems?2. here is a snapshot of my root directory:

To be perfectly honest I can only understand bits and pieces of whats in these articles as they use some technical language that goes over this novices head. So I was wondering if someone could explain this in everyday terms that we all can understand?
Is there a system admin tool for RHEL on montioring and logging system memory used and released that can dump to a log file?I'm having an issue with memory not being released when an application is closed. I need to have a tool monitor and log so I can troubleshoot to verify that it's an application not the OS.

Booted up system and it stated please insert system disk press any key.So it sounds like my startup got corrupted? I running centos 4.5 on it (old yes) Is there a repair I can perform by a disk? Would it matter if I chose i386 or x86? I cant remeber which version was installed on it.
