I am currently using an M-Audio 7.1 PCI sound card on a headless non-GUI Centos5.5 install. MPD is running in the background for jukebox usage. The problem is, I seem to be at 100% volume output on the jukebox and I can't figure out how to change volume. Using alsaunmute to set volume sets some kind of volume on the soundcard, from what I can tell, but it's like that new volume setting is not being respected by ALSA. I can also set the volume using 'alsamixer' which also produces no noticable effect (100% is the same as 0%, as loud as could be from the PC).
I'm using the digital coax output from the soundcard for this - not the 3.5mm jack (due to stereo reasons beyond my control). Perhaps I'm not modifying the master volume? Thing is, when modify volume settings via an MPD client, such as Minion or one on my phone,�the volume setting does change in the ALSA software, but there's no audible difference. It makes me think alsa is not being used for sound control, but I'm stumped as to how to check otherwise. At least sound plays!
I have a system with a 2TB RAID level 1 installed (2 x 2TB drives, configured as RAID1 through the BIOS). I installed Centos 5.5 and it runs fine. I now added another 2x2TB drives and configured them as RAID1 through the BIOS.
How do I add this new RAID volume to the existing logical volume?
I want to edit my volume meter so that way i can change my volume but be more precise about it. I mean if i slightly slide my finger a little bit it goes from to mute to all the way up. (I have a touchpad buttons)
(Ubuntu 10.04) I would like to change to change the ownership of one of my storage partitions from root to dad - I am currently reading through as much Ubuntu documentation as I can but the process is slow. If I gksudo nautilus and select the drive, right click/properties/Permissions the owner is set to root. If I try to change the group ownership from root to dad it looks like it momentarily does it but it stays at root.
using Pysdm as a gui for fstab - but so far I have only found out how to allow other users to mount the volume not own it. My fstab entry for this volume reads as /dev/sdb6 /media/backuphd2 ntfs-3g group=dad,users,user,owner 0 0 - it looks to me that in terms of ownership, root = 0 0 Can I find out what the ownership of dad is in terms of numbers (e.g. owner 0 1 or owner 1 1) and then change the fstab entry?
I have an NFS client that loses connectivity with an NFS volume about once a week. The NFS client has several other volumes mounted to the same NFS server but this is the only volume that appears to have problems. It is mounted with these options: intr,rw,rsize=8192,wsize=8192
Before I start messing with the timeout options, what else could I look at to troubleshoot this?
i know this is normal when you use ubuntu but i was wondering if there was a way to change this or fix this. i noticed when you play a flash movie (like a videos video) in full screen and you change the volume using the volume keys on the keyboard, it exits out of full screen mode.
I was wondering how you can change the music player that the volume task-bar applet uses? It's really starting to bug me now as I am sure I've seen the setting somewhere.
I have this problem that is every time I'm watching something in Full screen and try to lower or raise the volume using the volume scroll on the laptop (Toshiba Satellite if it matters) it minimizes the view. I'm using Fedora 12
I have a CentOS 5.4 storage server with LVM/RAID1 setup, I need to change the motherboard from Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2C to Asus P5K-E. After the switch, I got kernel panic during boot (the following is copied manually from the screen, is these stuff recorded somewhere in the log? I used CentOS CDROM and entered rescue mode to take a look, some findings:
1. Initially the drive label is different from my old system, for example the old sdb became sdc. I switched the SATA cable around to get this sorted out except one IDE drive (originally hda, now hde), but this drive is not used in RAID
2. After the label is fixed, I used mdadm to check RAID1 devices (md0/1/2/3), it seems each device is missing a drive (originally md0 is created by sda1+sdb1, now it's just sdb1, and thus degraded). I used mdadm to re-add the missing drive, mdadm --detail shows everything is fine now.
3. Step 2 didn't fix the error, so I "chroot /mnt/sysimage/" and took a look around, all the directories seem fine, include the ones on "main" volume group. vgscan/vgdisplay/lvdisplay shows all the vg and lv as they should be.
I'm still working on ubuntu 9.10 with an acer aspire 1810tz. To use my microphone I found out that I have to change my microphone settings because it's mono and the default setting is thinking it's stereo: With the Volume Controller I setup one chancel to 5 and the other to 90 and the mic is working fine. Starting Skype and using it I see that the setting is reducing the volume for the mic below 20, so nobody can hear me. I tried closing first Volume Controller and then starting Skype, no matter the volume of the mic is reduced. How do I stop this behavior?
I have fresh install (not upgrade) of Ubuntu 10.04. I have nVidia 8500GT VGA, drivers installed via System->Administration->Hardware drivers (ver. 195.36.15)Everything works fine, compiz too.But when I play the video in Totem movie player - in blinks ugly while changing volume directly via buttons on keyboard. It blinks in fullscreen and even in window. I did not have this in Ubuntu 9.10 - there it worked fine. What was changed? How to fix this? Interesting is that when I play it via mplayer - it is fine.
This will be a little long (having read Phil's 'how to ask questions' FAQ). I'm trying to get OpenVPN working between my CentOS server and some Windoze laptops running XP. There seems to be plenty of sample config files available, but to date, none of them have worked for me. Pulling out my trusty Wireshark, I've found some clues,
BACKGROUND: My local subnet (NAT'ed by my gateway router) is 192.168.52.x. My router has been configured with a conduit (port-forward) for port 1194 (the standard OpenVPN port), which points towards my CentOS server.The CentOS server is .52.112, and the supplicant is .52.110. I have tried the lient both inside and outside my local subnet, with no difference in events or outcomes.
I've tried to read many of the topics in this forum first and tried to find a solution to my problem, but can't find one.I'm testing CentOS 5.5, it's the first time I'm using a CentOS Linux release.I'm trying to configure the proxy "client side " on it and cannot find how to do it.On other Linux release I've used the ENV variable like "http_proxy" or "HTTP_PROXY" etc etc.This time, I don't know why but it doesn't work.I've put the name and @ip of the proxy in /etc/hosts and tried different version upper/lowercase of "http_proxy" "HTTP_proxy" "ftp_pr.." but it doesn't work.If I configure manually Firefox and puting the name or @ip of the proxy we have on our network, it works.But if I try to use ENV variable it doesn't work...
I am trying CentOS (as a change from openSuse), I have downloaded DVD and have loaded it as a Virtual Machine. So far so good. It did a "quick" install, which leaves me with Gnome as my desktop, I am used to using KDE, so I tried to use "Add/Remove Software" to load KDE. I also want to load other software which I have as RPMs.
Two questions:
1. My VM is not connected to the internet and when I open the package manager it tries to retrieve information from on-line repositories - I have tried disabling on-line repositories. I do not want it to look on-line, so how do I get it to just look at the installation DVD?
Just out of curiosity, has anyone experienced a problem similar to this:[URL]...after upgrading to 5.3? Comment #1 seems to be a particularly good description of the issue. I am finding this behavior with Bus 003 Device 002: ID 041e:3000 Creative Technology, Ltd SoundBlaster Extigy (USB sound)after upgrading to 5.3. Basically, trying to change the volume with the sliders (either with the gnome applet or the volume control gui) sometimes causes the volume to go way down when you are trying to raise the volume (both with scroll-wheel and dragging the sliders). The left-right bars also get unlocked sporadically. It is most prevalent when actually playing something like a move (eg. with Xine) and trying to change the volume with the volume manager or applet. It's especially noticeable if you are trying to change the volume quickly. I'm not sure much can be done about it, as it appears to be an upstream bug but I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this. I've just added my 2 cents on the RedHat Bugzilla site.
I have an iSCSI device that is large, ~17TB usable, and I've created an XFS file system at the device level. I mount the device no problem and am able to touch and remove files without issue. I start my application and within about 5-10 minutes I start seeing the following entries appear in /var/log/messages

I have a Nis server on Suse 11 which is configured using Yast and nis clients on Suse and CentOs .All clients which is on the Suse Os is working fine. But on CentOs , users couldn't login using nis username.I have mounted home directory using nfs in fstab . I can switch to nis users homedirectory only when i am root. But nis users could'nt login on reboot.' ypcat passwd username ' is showing the output . No selinux is enabled in the client .Is there is any problem with Suse server to Centos Client in nis ??
I'm looking for insite on how it might be possible to grow an existingvolume/partition/filesystem while it's in active use, and without having to add additional luns/partitions to do it.For example the best way I can find to do itcurrently, and am using this in production, is you have a system using LVM managing a connected LUN (iSCSI/FC/etc), with a single partition/filesystem residing on it.To grow this filesystem (while it's active) you have to add a new LUN to the existing volume group, and then expand the filesystem. To date I have not found a way to expand a filesystem that is hosted by a single LUN.
For system context, I'm running a 150 TB SAN that has over 300 spindles, to which about 50 servers are connected. It is an equal mix of Linux, Windows, and VMware hosts connected via both FC & iSCSI... With both Windows & VMware, the aforementioned task of expanding a single LUN and having the filesystem expanded is barely a 1 minute operation that "Just Works".If you can find me a sweet way to seamlessly expand a LUN and have a Linuxfilesystem expanded (without reboot/unmount/etc)I have cycles to test out any suggested methods/techniques, and am more than happy to report the results for anyone else interested. I think this is a subject that many people would like to find that magic method to make all our lives much easier
I'm wondering if there is a way to shrink an ext3 LV mount as / .I tried to with resize2fs ... but seems that isn't possible if the partition is mounted.
I am trying to partition a 6TB volume using parted, but I am a bit confused with the syntax. From the (parted) prompt, I know I should use the command "mkpart primary <start> <end>". I guess that <start> should =0. How do I tell what <end> should be? I want it to fill the entire volume but I don't see how to tell what the exact number should be.
I have a huge RAID6 array 21TB+ already partitioned in GPT. This is to be used as the storage location for my company's backup server, and I want to access it as one logical volume. Is this possible with Centos5? I just discovered the product specifications for Centos5, and saw that the maximum file system size is 16TB, but LVM2 should support volumes up to 1EB. Is there any way I can make this work in Centos, or am I going to have to run a different distro?
I installed CentOS 5.5 32-bit with Gnome and want to use it as a file server. The volume I wish to share is a 1.5TB NTFS partition stored on a USB drive. I installed "ntfsprogs" and "fuse-ntfs-3g" to get NTFS support. However, I only have read access to the volume.
How can I fix this and get Read+Write to the NTFS drive?
Before creating this topic I googled a lot and found lots of forum topics and blog posts with similar problem. But that did not help me to fix it. So, I decided to describe it here. I have a virtual machine with CentOS 5.5 and it was working like a charm. But then I turned it off to make a backup copy of this virtual machine and after that it has a boot problem. If I just turn it on, it shows the following error message:
Activating logical volumes Volume group "VolGroup00" not found Trying to resume from /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 Unable to access resume device (/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01) ... Kernel panic ...! During the reboot I can see 3 kernels and if I select the 2nd one the virtual machine starts fine, it founds the volume group etc. (But there is also a problem - it can not connect the network adapters.) So, it is not possible to boot it with the newest kernel (2.6.18-194.17.1.el5), but it is possible with an older one (2.6.18-194.11...)
I looked into GRUB's menu.lst and it seems to be fine. I also tried #mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-92.el5.img 2.6.18-92.el5 no luck! Yes, I can insert DVD .iso and boot from it in "linux rescue" mode.
I'm trying to do a disk upgrade on some servers. They are using LVM with DRBD on top and each LVM volume contains a Xen image. I have already created identical volumes on another volume group, copied the data and pointed DRBD to the new source (Which seems to have worked).
What I am unsure of is how to safely remove the disks. The disks are an Areca Raid 1 array and support hotswap. Can I just pull them out of the machine or is some sort of command needed to tell LVM or the kernel to disconnect from the physical array device? Is removing the raid array from the Areca management GUI first a good idea?
We are running an C++ application in AWS EC2 instance (CentOS 5.4) mounted with an EBS Volume (say /mymountpoint). We do more simultaneous writes to the EBS Volume from our application. But at some point we get 'ERROR: Input/output error'. After this, 'ls -l /mymountpoint' command itself fails with the i/o error. The filesystem which we use for the EBS Volume is xfs. I unmounted the drive and done xfs_check and again mounted the drive. Now, everything seems to be working fine. But the issue still persists everytime when we do simultaneous writes.

I am having trouble changing the resolution in my Computer,I am new to Linux and somehow, Lucky, I got this program to install, I installed it on a Dell PowerEdge 1850 with a Radeon 7000 Video card,I had another one set-Up before which gave me a resolution of 1400 x xxxxx? Was great, this one only offers 800 x 600 and some other very low resolutions, The programing allows me to change it and demands I log out, Restart x and log in again, took me a day to figure out what was "x" and how to restart it, but no response. Still the same.
In reading the Forums I see this command allot "/sbin/lspci -m" But, too bad, nobody tells exactly where to type that series of digits to get any response,
