No matter what app I use, if I view a window at full screen, the contents of the window are white instead of displaying the content. I have to re-size the window smaller in order to see the contents of a window. What can be causing this and how do I fix it?
I am using a HP laptop running 11.04 in Classic mode.
What I mean is I'd like to watch stuff in its original size but with the rest of the screen black, the way it is in full screen view (but I don't want it zoomed). RealPlayer calls this option "theatre view". Is there a line I can put into terminal? I tried

and changing commenting in zoom=yes and changing it to zoom=no. Made no difference.
I have this problem that is every time I'm watching something in Full screen and try to lower or raise the volume using the volume scroll on the laptop (Toshiba Satellite if it matters) it minimizes the view. I'm using Fedora 12

Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

Anyway, after some looking around and trying different scripts and programs, the only thing that worked for me was a firefox extension (which unfortunately requires registration - which fortunately takes really 5 seconds. No e-mail confirmations etc. - and unfortunately has a website FULL of ads and pop ups! I hope they dont start asking for money soon). So, the extension is [URL] I dont know if you can install it from addons.mozilla.org . I logged in yet found no install button.. had to go to developers website.
I am having a small issue with how Ubuntu displays my files. In Windows 7, I typically view my files in the "list format." In Windows 7, when in that format, it displays the entire file name of my files. In Ubuntu, "compact view" is the same format as "list" from Windows 7. The only difference is, it does not show the entire filename. Kansas - Carry on my Wayward son.mp3 for example, is viewed as Kansas - Carry on m... This is really not a big deal. And I get it, compact means compact. I can just use Ubuntu's "List View" to see the entire file names of files. But that's not my preferred way of viewing files. I was wondering if there was a way to make "compact view" show the entire file of my files.

my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

i would get list of files in 'documents' dir on my konsole.

Bu now in 11.4 when i do that i get whole path, like this for example:
:~/> vi documents/<tab><tab>
:~/> vi documents/
documents/doc1 documents/doc2 documents/doc3
how to make it look "old" style?
What I'm trying to do is wget images, however, I'm not sure how to do it 100% right. What I've got is a index.html page that has images (thumbs) that link to the full size images. How do I grab the full size images?
Example of links on the page:

But it keeps freezing up on me (sometimes a solid white screen, other times with vertical lines on a white background) and then becomes non-responsive. Sometimes there is a small (about 1in) square where the mouse was when it froze.I have a fairly old computer (emachines T6522). Is there something I can do to keep it from crashing?

It only seems to happen when I'm running off mains power, and screen brightness is 100%. Stops when I lower the screen brightness.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 off a desktop. I was using it for quite a while up until last night when out of nowhere while surfin', and browsing, the screen just turned white, I've tried restarting by powering off manually, as I couldn't get it to any other way. After the computer restarts, it might flash black for a sec a couple of times, then back to being white again, the BIOS screen doesn't even show up. It sounds like in the background the computer might still be loading up. My monitor is a 21"LCD, if that means anything?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

OpenSuse 11.3 with nVidia drivers.I have the screen working fine though it only runs in 1600x1200@75 using the nVidia driver (GTX260 card).When I play a game in full screen mode all seems OK but when I exit the game then I just get the mouse pointer on a black screen.There must be something present since the cursor changes as I move it, normal pointer -> hand over a link etc. It's just that black on black isn't very readable.

Today when I turned it on, after Grub and the loading screen, the system brought up a smaller white screen in the corner with my username@machinename"~$ as the first line.
This looks like a terminal window. I can see my folders and use the system but I get no GUI anymore. Not sure why this is happening.
Tried booting into Recovery and updating the system, but to no avail. I've also searched the forums for the last few hours but have not found anything similar.
Anyone have any idea what to do? code...
Not sure if this is relevant to my problem or not. However, I do remember this happening on my desktop version of 9.10... that was solved by installing 9.04.
I have an Acer Aspire 5220 with and AMD processor and 1 GB of RAM. I had Windows vista and now have Dual Boot Vista / Kubuntu 9.10 clean install. Recently a blank white box appeared in the upper left corner of the screen. About 10-20 minutes after I log in it appears and disappears after 1-2 hours.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout 1/2 - 3/4 of the times I boot my PC to 10.04 RC, It quickly goes into a white screen at the beginning and then just hangs there. I updated from 9.1 and it did this, then I fresh installed and had same issue, including when I tried to boot of the 10.04RC boot CD (before 10.04 was even installed). There is nothing listed under sys/admin/hardware. In all cases, I have to hold power button, and keep rebooting...eventually, it will boot normally. I had no problems in 9.04 (nor on XP which I had on the system originally). I do not have a dual boot system, only ubuntu. View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter being on the computer for awhile, it suddenly stops and goes to the purple screen like one would see when turning the computer on, only slightly distorted. after a few moments it switches to a black screen with a flashing _ but you can't type anything, and then it changes so it's blank, and these white bars start to flash on the screen. I just put 10.04 on my computer about two days ago, it's been doing it since. When I first tried to upgrade from 9.10 I encountered a huge error of some sort so I just put a brand new install onto the computer from CD.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know this is Ubuntu forums, but my other laptop has Ubuntu and I know this is a community full of very smart people (got Ubuntu help the other day).Anyway , this laptop's problem is, the screen goes teal i areas that were once white. Now, originally I thought something was broken, but now my theory is it's a loose connection. On the bottom left of the screen there is a thick black cable that leads up behind the screen and connects with that duct tape looking thing. If I simply lift up on the black cable, the screen goes back to normal.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 10.04 installed in a dual boot system with windows 7 pro on 1 desktops and one laptop. Also dual boot on a desktop with windows xp and Ubuntu 10.04. The two desktops run AMD processors and the laptop uses an Intel processor. On the two desktops after booting the screen will fade to black and white and then back to color. While in the black and white the computer is frozen. This happens using Firefox mainly and other programs. It never happens using my laptop with the intel processor. Does Ubuntu 10.04 have a problem with AMD processors? It does it so much it is hard to do anything with the and desktop computers, but I have never seen it happen on my intel laptop.

I got to the main menu and selected to run it directly from CD, and the Ubuntu symbol showed up saying it was loading things, but then the screen went black and nothing happened even if I waited over 15 minutes.
