I successfuly installed CentOS to my Dell laptop using CentOS_5.5_Live_DVD.iso and mounting it to a USB flash drive with iso2usb.exe, Now my laptop will Not load CentOS when I remove the USB flash drive, I get a messege saying "no system found".
View 5 RepliesI am running a server that is mostly headless, but does run the Gnome environment (I have ubuntu-desktop installed). I usually administer it via VNC over SSH. My problem is that when I reboot the system over SSH, the system fails to fully load the GUI, which prevents me from connecting via VNC (although SSH still works).
When I connected a monitor and rebooted, the system booted up fine. It appears that the GUI will not load without an attached monitor, which never happened before in previous Ubuntu versions. I do use many commands but prefer a GUI for certain tasks and visualization of my work since my system has the resources to spare. Running Lucid Lynx
I am using Centos 5.2, with the latest 3ware driver installed. The 3ware bios shows all the external disks (its a 9690SA-8-E), they are setup as Jbod, but when I login to Centos I do not see my attached drives only my local ones. When using fdisk -l under root I see my attached disks but not my external array:

We just setup a HP DL380 with CentOS 5, and ran all of the latest updates.I am trying to attach a Compaq array (no model number) that is SCSI attached. I can see the array from the bios and created a raid group on it from there. However, from LVM and lvscan, I don't see it at all. I checked dmesg and there are no errors.Also, interestingly /proc/scsi/scsi is empty.

The reason for all this is that I have network access to several remote machines. I can ask disks to be moved between machines, but I have no physical access. In order to do software testing, I would like to have several system disks with different installed CentOS versions. It would be easer if I could build the system disks on one single machine. The hardware an all machines is very nearly identical.

I use the server for a variety of purposes, and what I don't know how to do via SSH I've alway been able to do through VNC. However, since the upgrade vino-server will no longer run if there isn't a monitor attached. Before it used to start up without a problem. Even by attempting to run the server via SSH gives me a "could not load display" error. Summary: I need to get vino-server running at boot time on a server with Ubuntu 10.04, without a monitor attached.

I want to check all the child processes attached to a specific process. Say for a example; my process is a java process. Then I wanna know what are the processes attached to that java process. At the moment I use the command # ps aux|grep java; this gives the details about the currently running java process. So I can kill the whole java process using #kill -9 {pid} ...but there are sub processes attached (I guess child processes) to java process. I wanna view all of them & kill whatever the process I like not the whole thing. I'm using Red hat 5 enterprise edition. and currently a weblogic application server is running on that.

Is it possible to have more than one password simultaneously attached to a login account in Linux?I'd like to be able to add a temporarily-authorized user to an account on my web server, but don't want to have to change the login afterwards.Even cooler would be if this could be done with a timer of some kind so the temporary password would auto-die after, say, 24 hours.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 and my basement computer running Windows 7. I want to be able to access files on on both computers from either. I also want to be able to print from my laptop to the printer attached to the basement computer. I finally got printing working. Then I tackled the filesharing. I finally get filesharing working and now, I can't get printing working again, even though I've gone back to the version of smb.conf that I had when I was able to print. So here is what I've got.

When I look at my printer properties in Ubuntu I see the status: Idle - Unable to connect to CIFS host after (tried 3 times) Cups Error Log When I look at the Printer Error Log, I see: (partial) Printer log extract.txt I can ping the IP address of the windows box 192.168.0.5, but when I try to ping the name owner-pc it fails. This would lead me to beleive that the there is a name resolution problem.
I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto an external hard drive connected by USB to my laptop:
sdd partition
Windoze still resides on the box's internal hard drive:
sda2 partition
I also partitioned the internal hard drive so that I have a repository where my documents etc can be accessed by either linux or windoze:
sda3 partition (FAT32) I'm assuming that Grub is on the external drive somewhere - as is probably now the Windoze MBR. I'd like to be able to give my wife the ability to start the box (and boot into Windoze) when the external drive is not attached (so that she doesn't have to take the latter with her when she needs to be mobile with the computer). What do I need to do to move grub and the MBR back onto the laptop's internal drive? Or, I suppose: What do I need to do to obtain the functionality that I'm looking for? I'm getting somewhat more comfortable with the command line but, I still need a bit of hand-holding
I am running a Cron job which mails the content of a log report every day. The problem is that the contents are sent as an attachment instead of as the body of the email. The strange thing is that if I run the instructions from the command line everything works fine, but if I do so from the Cron job the log report is attached instead of being sent inline.
The instruction I use is:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a new installed CentOS with Asterisk on a dell p4 286 ram, 40gigHD and am unable to get the asterisk gui to start. After new installation i am able to get all the way to the root@localhost level. Every command I use (from forum answers and site searches) deems a "no such file or directory" response from the server.s a precaution, I re-downloaded and re-installed the application. Is there a direct command to run at root@localhost to start the asterisk gui and if so what is it? When I type asterisk -r (or any command with asterisk in it) it responds "asterisk is running in a different directory". If not, can someone please direct me to the correct help section to uninstall CentOS until I am able to test on my own machine at home and learn the entire system before reinstalling it as our phone server. I have limited time at work to get the VoIP to install and run.

The problem I am having is when I start up my system which is using CentOS 5, it got some errors and it cannot go into the GUI.
It had some errors like "touch" and I cannot start up my xserver.
I'm running centos 5 on my other pc, the latest version downloadable, and when i go to run firefox or konqueror to browse the web, they don't load. there is no errors, or errors in the logs, so i don't know what to do.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have acquired what appears to be an old Gateway 2000 686 (Intel Chipset 82845G) with a Radeon X1600 graphics card and plan to turn it into a web server, although a minor problem, but I can not get a GUI (GNOME desktop) to load, however a text based server loads fine.Whether I use default 'GNOME Desktop' option at install or load text based install and use yum to install the GUI later, I get a couple of screen flickers and the screen goes black on start up.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI installed CentOS with KDE and Gnome. the computer starts with a console instead of a window manager. When I try to start Gnome (using either startx or gdm), it freezes the whole computer. I can't even get to another command prompt using Control+Alt+F2, when I try to start Gnome.
After rebooting I tried starting KDE using the kdm command, but it prints out some error messages and logs me out of my session. (I've never seen a program force a log out of a session before! I thought that was strange.) I tried to record the errors by using the command "kdm > errors.log" and "kdm >> errors.log", but nothing is written to the errors.log file.
Also, under the (likely?) case that this problem is caused by the graphics card, I ran lspci and discovered that this computer contains this graphics card: VGA Compatible Controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)

I am starting a new line of business for my company, selling IP PBX's, based on Asterisk.I am using the Elastix build, which is based on CentOS 5.5.I just purchased a Shuttle XS35-701,which is an Atom powered box, which draws 40W of power. It looks like it is going to make a great Asterisk appliance. My only problem is that CentOS doesn't recognize my network card.It is a JMicron JME260.JMicron has a "driver" on its web site. There are two versions for Linux: 1.0.5,available as a tar archive,and 1.0.6, in a rar archive. I have downloaded both a tried to install both. I get the same errors on either one.The instructions say to expand the archive, and to change to the proper directory. Then is says to "make install" I have done this multiple times. I get a series of errors:
