Ubuntu :: Add Grub2 Kernel Option ?
Jan 10, 2010I have been reading for hours and just do not get how to do this simple task. I need to add a couple of kernel options to the 3rd menu item that shows in my grub.cfg list. I understand which files to edit (not grub.cfg) and run the updater.
If I look in /etc/default/grub I cannot figure out how to add a kernal parameter unless it is the default.
So basically I want to change the equivilent of this line below:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
But for a kernel menu item that is not the default.

Apr 13, 2011I've had a fairly trouble free dual boot system for about 7 months now, windows vista / ubuntu 10.04 on separate drives. Got a little lazy and had quite a backlog of updates to do in ubuntu so I started up the update manager and let it do it's thing overnight. When I checked in it was waiting for a reboot to finish installing, which I did. When grub came up every selection returned the same error: file not found and must load kernel first, press any key to continue which leads back to the selection menu. Windows still works fine, and with a live cd I can see the the normal file system stuff is still there: filesystem, intrid.img , intridimg.old , vmlinuz , vmlinuz.old... etc.
Tried the live cd terminal to install grub.. grub-setup, grub-install, grub-probe all return the "/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub (is /dev mounted?)." line.
Anyway here is the boot info script results.

Jan 7, 2010So I know I should have known better then to turn my updates back on after the 15 and 16 kernel updates crashed ubuntu and grub but I did anyway and once again after a new kernel gets installed I'm stuck at the grub sh prompt.
Been down the road before... tried using
linux /boot/vml....... root=/dev/sda1 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro
When I use the 16 or 17 kernel I get an error stating "invalid imaginary number"...
So I use the 14 kernal and enter
initrd /boot/initrd.....
boot
And it boots like it did the last time this crashed. I went to the terminal and entered
sudo apt-get install grub 2
sudo update-grub2
And then rebooted like I did last time expecting the problem to be fixed and at least be able to boot up the 14-generic. It didn't fixed this time. So now what do I do to fix grub and what do I do about having 2 unbootable kernals??

Apr 16, 2010I have not dug into Ubuntu for almost a year now (Since Jaunty, really). I am trying to come to grips with Grub2, but have just now encountered it in Lucid. I am having a terrible time with the graphics chipset, and it may well be that Ubuntu cannot be used on this computer (an older laptop with the dreaded Intel 82845G graphics chip). There are a number of older bug reports that it is unsupported, but some success in more recent versions.
Anyway, one suggestion has been to add i915.nomodset=1 to the kernel boot line. Now, this was a cinch in Legacy Grub, but I have been reading Grub2 wikis and tutorials for two days now, and I know about the config files, but I cannot find anything which tells me specifically how to add a parameter to the kernel boot line.
Ubuntu :: Grub2 Splash Gone After Kernel Install?
Jun 7, 2010I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 for a while now without any issues. I have also been dual booting with grub2 for a while now, only issues being crappy customization. But anyways I had my grub2 splash all set up the way i liked, with a nice background and everything. I run every update Ubuntu wants and have never had an issue until recently.
On June 3rd I ran an update that Ubuntu requested, it installed a new kernel (-2.6.32-22) and requested a restart, as usual. after restarting, my grub splash is gone. I thought no biggie ill just run `update-grub` as i have before and it will fix everything...nope
I get the error message `head: cannot open `/boot/grub/video.lst' for reading: No such file or directory` right where the "image found" message is supposed to be.

Mar 7, 2010I've been using Ubuntu since 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I only recently fully switched to Linux OS's, and Ubuntu is now my primary. I currently have 9.10 installed. CURRENTLY I also have Backtrack 4, and Fedora 12 (Ugh!).Previously, I thought something was wrong with my my filesystem in Ubuntu 9.10, and after an upgrade of the linux kernel, I started to get Error: You need to load the Kernel First. That's where my problems started. I had upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04 and I still had Grub Legacy, so I went through hoops to try and get it to work, but eventually everything just kind of broke, and I completely wiped off my partitions on it and started fresh installs of all 3.
And now that the new linux kernel is released, 2.6.31-20 generic (I think... That's what the highest number on a file I can find in /boot is)I went through a few more hoops and ladders and tried to get it to work, but to no avail. I've looked the internet for a solution to this and tried just about everything but there is no unified answer, and I've seen on Launchpad there are alot of bugs that are classified as 'Fixed', but the problem still remains.I took out the 'quiet splash' part in the GRUB2 line for the newest kernel and it didn't do anything. It only changed it to "Error: Couldn't find file".This is the top two kernels (Main and Recovery for the new, and Main and Recovery for the previous working one)

Sep 13, 2010So I currently have an Ubuntu/Mandriva/PCLinuxOS multiboot setup on my system. After I installed the latter two I setup Ubuntu's grub2 to be my default boot manager. After running my Code: sudo update-grub command it successfully found and added entries for Mandriva and PCLinuxOS, however upon trying to boot into either of these distros (selecting them from the menu) I get some terminal output that ultimately ends in kernel panic.

Find these lines:

And change it with this:

Notice two differences.
1. There's no ` before "for" and after "done" keywords.
2. There's no list= before "for"
If you want to change the name of entry, scroll down to the end of the file and find last two occurrences of:

${OS} stands for Ubuntu and ${version} stands for your kernel version. I changed this into:

You can use your own imagination. If you want to have specific name for your Windows entry, in /boot/grub/grub.cfg copy everything between:

Jun 9, 2011I have recently installed the Maverick backport kernel (2.6.35 - from the lucid-updates/main repo) and while I was at it I also manually (through synaptic) got rid of some old kernels. I made sure that I kept the current Lucid kernel though (that was working fine). All seemed well (although I didn't actually check - just no errors) so I rebooted.On reboot I have lost all my Ubuntu kernel options!
I rebooted with a live cd, mounted, etc and ran

but it doesn't seem to find any kernels!

Mar 7, 2010i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

Jul 11, 2011I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.
Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

I know how to load first 512 bytes from some patition by chainloader and load grub2, but what I need is to load directly grub2 core without passing by bootstriping code (first 512 bytes).So, my first boot manager is grub4dos, then I can load grub2 and later I load Ubuntu. But I think I have to edit --set-root
What I dont know is how.
In hdd 0,7 (sda8) I have Ubuntu 10.10 and /boot/grub/core.img is in sda8 (hd0.7)

General :: Debian 686 Kernel Total Networking Failure On IbmX60 But 486 Kernel Works
Feb 11, 2011The 486 kernel works just fine, and while I have only 1GB of RAM at the moment I hope to have 2GB someday and would like to take advantage of the dual core CPU, so I would like to configure grub to run the 686 kernel by default. For whatever reason, it runs the 486 right now and the 686 fails in a major way: there is no network connectivity at all. It could be plugged into my cable modem router and it shows no wired connections. The fact that one works and the other doesn't puzzles me since I haven't touched either since the install and a few rounds of upgrades.
I should mention I'm newbie but getting better; I managed to install debian on this x60, yet while preserving the factory install rescue & recovery partition and preserving the factory install MBR so that ibm-specific hardware functions (thinkvantage button, etc.) still work. This required me to use dd to copy the first 512 bytes of my debian partition to a file in the windows partition, etc., and modifying the windows bootloader. (I wish I had learned dd long ago--it rocks). I did this because if I ever resell the X60, the fact is most people use MS Windows and having that partition adds a perception of value to some potential buyers; not to mention I paid $ for it (I was young & stupid) so why should I delete it. I also backed up the recovery partition on another drive using dd over NFS in case the hd ever heads south.
Anyway, I've never been comfy with messing with the kernel. I did once recompile a module for ALSA because it had a bug in it for an old Yamaha integrated sound card on an old PIII and the newer version worked [alsa fails on this x60 too but I think I found a post on here that has a solution I will try later]. But I'm clueless as to networking modules, not to mention the correct module is installed already from Intel for this chipset. So what is there to do?
Here's a clue: the ifconfig output is radically different from the 686 and 486 kernels. Looks like hardware is not being detected since eth0 fails to show:
I would show the diff output below if it weren't so long--and not allowed--upon 2 text files, the first holding the output of modprobe -l under the 486 kernel and the second under the 686 kernel.
General :: Extracting Kernel Config From Kernel Image -- Extract-ikconfig
Jan 22, 2010I'm trying to run extract-ikconfig because I've mistakenly deleted an old kernel config that I'd like to recover. However, when running the script from the latest (2.6.32.5) tree I run into this error:

Coincidentally, this happens with all of my kernel images. Is it a fixable problem? I should really set CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PROC next time..

My first thoughts was that it might be my grub bootloader configuration, so had a big play around with that but it didn't fix it. Also made sure support was built for filesystems. However almost all that Fstab mounts are ext3 anyway, and certainly the root and /boot are. Now thinking it may be a memory error so will run a check when I shutdown.

Feb 13, 2011Dell laptop booting from a USB stick with a CentOS 5.5 minimum installation.
Uncompressing Linux...OK, booting the kernel.

Kernel panic - no syncing: Attempted to kill init!
1. Does minimum installation not drop on a kernel or initrd with ext3 support? I can't imagine that's true, but have to ask.
2. The USB stick is single partition ext3. Maybe there is some limitation specifically related to USB stick booting that requires boot to be FAT16 or FAT32? Except the CentOS 5.5 installer refuses to let me install on either FAT.
3. How can I do the equivalent of lsmod on a linux installation that will not boot? i.e. I have CentOS x86_64 running in VirtualBox, I can plug the USB stick in there, so how do I get information on the USB stick's kernel and initrd if I can't boot from it?
4. Is it possible to rebuild the i386 based initrd on this USB stick, when the computer is not booted from that stick, with a system that's x86_64 based?
System Info:
Dell Latitude i686 Laptop which has run CentOS 5.5 and Fedora 12,13,14 in the past, and boots from Fedora 14 Live CD transferred to a USB stick. So I know USB booting is possible on this machine, and this stick.
The process of creating the stick:
CentOS 5.5 i386 on a USB stick. Old Dell i686 laptop which has previously run CentOS 5.5 installed from DVD, and has successfully booted from this same USB stick holding transferred Fedora 12,13,14 Live CDs. CentOS 5.5 was installed onto the USB drive directly by the CentOS 5.5 DVD installer (running virtualized in VirtualBox 4.02 on Mac OS X 10.6.5.). No errors or complaints during installation.
For whatever reason, the installer did not do some things correctly. First Grub wasn't working correctly, I got that sorted out and have the Grub+CentOS splash screen, it finds vmlinuz and the initrd, and then I get a kernel panic.
Ext3 was built into the kernel and that's why I'm getting this message. I do not know how the installer would have dropped a kernel or initrd during instalation that that don't contain such a basic thing that obviously comes in linux kernel 2.6.18-89 EL.

Jun 25, 2010I am running an Hp Pavillion dv6000 with the Broadcom card that never seems to work for Linux. I recently talked with my friend who said he found a way to get it work.following his instructions I opened Synaptic and checked the package bmcwl-kernel-source to be installed.I went through the process of it all and it said it had install successfully. I restarted the computer and when I tried to enter my operating system I got this error "Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block(8,1)"
I have previous versions of Linux on my computer so I can still get in to those if need be but I don't know how to undo what I did or why it isn't working for that matter. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I am getting this error and how I can fix it?
General :: How To Setup Grub2 With Xen
Aug 24, 2011I am booting a new Xen kernel and it all goes fine up until some point during the boot process when the machine reboots without warning. Unfortunately, I don't see errors flash up just before that happens. Is there a way of booting the machine with a working kernel and looking at a log of the previous boot or something? What I didn't notice is that there is actually an error on the screen. It just flashes up very quickly before the reboot. The error is related to not being able to mount the root filesystem because there is something wrong with my grub configuration.
A normal entry in grub.cfg looks like this:

Gettext is installed. I'm on ubuntu 10.04 LTS. The error flashed up on boot is something like "please insert a correct root=boot kernel option..." Why is this so hard and why are there so many different examples of grub2 xen? some put /boot in front some just /. I tried putting /boot in front but that didn't help. Also some have --set=root uuid and yet all my other working entries just have --set uuid. Is this something to do with a different grub2 version?
