Is there any way to manually sort the order of Places (KDE's "bookmarks") that show up in the side panel of Dolphin, or to have it automatically sorted e.g. alphabetically?One might think such a feature, if it existed, to be well-documented and easily-accessible.

I don't fully understand this problem. Using 10.10 on Dell Inspiron 2650.
When I load a DVD or CD the DVD/CD player and disc doesn't show in Places or on the desktop. It doesn't show in Banshee. But using VLC and going to media/open disc/play I can play both the audio CD and the DVD's.
Any idea what the problem is? How do I get the player to show in Places? Should there be an icon on the desk top?
I just want to open picture folder. when i click 'places' then picture then automatically movie player opens?

I can only do basic sorting by length/size, and I can't grep because the text is random. How can I do this besides manually openiing + saving each in gedit.I'm on Ubuntu Linux.I've already done all the sorting I can based on ize,wordcount,greps,date,etc. This is what's left over. I'm trying to find an easy way to view +save/ignore the rest.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI use Banshee 1.5.4 on Ubuntu 9.10 with a 2nd gen iPod Shuffle. I was thrilled when I plugged it in to see that everything worked right out-of-the-box but then I found that there's no way to manually order songs, Banshee always put an arrow in a column for you.
If you don't know much about the Shuffle, it lets you flick between 'sorted' and 'shuffled' mode. In sorted mode it plays songs in the order they are arranged in the music playlist. I like to keep classical and relaxing songs at the top of my playlist for when I can't sleep but Banshee won't let me manually organise my songs so I can't do this.
Peculiarly, when you drag songs to the Shuffle individually, though they will show up as being sorted, when you go to play them on the Shuffle they play in the order in which you dragged them. I was planning to just drag and drop over each song individually but I think there must be an easier way... I'm probably just missing something. P.S. Here's a screenshot to clarify. I synched the songs over in the order of Blur, Gorillaz, Air and Muse but they don't show as such

I have a china phone which has mp3 player and unfortunately it reads the file names in its memory card in sequential order according where the file is saved. The file system is NTFS. cod

This is kinda lame. but the OS of the phone has no capability sorting the file according to filename in its built in mp3 player.
my question is how can I sort the files sector by sector(is my term right?) so the lame mp3 player would read the files finally in alphabetically sorted order. I Will plug my phone on my PC

I use mt-daapd music server to stream music to a couple of network music players (which use UPnP protocols). Recently (last month or so) I have found that on restarting my ubuntu system I need to manually restart the avahi-daemon in order for the music players to be able to 'see' the music server. I think avahi-damon is running when ubuntu first starts up. The output of a ps aux shows:

I'd like to understand why I need to restart the avahi-daemon and either solve this or learn a way to automate restarting it on system boot up so I don't have to do it manually each time. My system is ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and the version of avahi-daemon is 0.6.25
What options should I use when I'm using the sort command to sort the top 5 CPU processes (ps -eo user,pid,ppid,%cpu,%mem,fname | sort ??? | head -5) showing max to min usage?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs,and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix.For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:

'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I recently installed Ubuntu. I am dual booting with Windows 7. I created a 3rd partition that contains all my music, pictures and videos. So in the Places dropdown menu, as well as in the explorer, I replaced the usual Music, Documents, Videos etc folders with the ones in the Storage partition. However when I did this it made the icons the simple orange folder icons. Is there a way to change them back to the original icons that has the different emblems according to what kind of folder it is?

A simple and small problem but annoying all the same...I don't like having the downloads/pictures etc bookmarks in the places menu so I remove them but every time I restart my machine they come back.

No go. Also when I get into nautilus (using "computer" below the separation line in the places menu) I can access the bookmarks just fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two Xubuntu machines. On one I upgraded in place, no problem. But the other got messed up so I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 from scratch. I like the new Xubuntu, including changes they've made with this version, but...on the fresh install, the Places menu is missing (see attached).
Places is one really neat feature that my distro had the Windows doesn't; it makes/made life easier for me--I hate to see it just go away. Does anyone know how to bring it back? It doesn't seem to be available under Add New Items (to the panel).

View 5 Replies View RelatedSomething very strange has happened to my system (Lucid / Gnome / 64 bit): when I try to open a location from Gnome Menu, message pops up saying: "Can't open location [file:///...]. No program is registered to open this type of file." Or something in this vein, I'm translating the message from Polish. So I can't open locations via the main menu, but the bookmarks work fine in an open Nautilus window. It looks like the system doesn't know it should open a location with Nautilus... I looked through file associations in Ubuntu Tweak, but couldn't find anything corresponding to "file:///..." or anything resembling opening a location (I'm not exactly a Linux guru). Also, the folder shortcuts in Cairo-Dock don't work, the same goes for the FolderView screenlets. However, in the MainMenu screenlet, the location shortcuts do work. There has to be some obvious explanation of this anomaly, but I lack a deeper knowledge of the system to work it out. I can't say at which point it started exactly, I think it was around the time I started dragging extra shortcuts to the Cairo-Dock shortcuts applet, but that may be a coincidence.

- go to Nautilus (tree view in sidepane) down in the folders until I see my destination on the left;
- switch to places in the sidepane and drag and drop the folder onto the places thing.
Then, the folder shows up with the name there, which is something like "Web_ABC". So I want to change it to "Web" only. On my 64bit machine, this works, on my 32bit machine, it doesn't. Whenever I change the name and press ENTER, it goes back to the old name. On the 64bit system, it only worked when I went to some other place once, and then fine, but on the 32bit one, no chance.
how do I add items to the Places menu? In my case a Downloads folder, the folder already exists I just haven't been able to figure out how to add it to the Places menu

This is not the bookmarks area (which is below) so I can't just right-click and remove or remove it from Bookmarks spot. I already tried commenting the floppy in fstab and then removed the entire line to no avail. Floppy drive is disabled in the Bios, I haven't had a floppy drive in 10+ years.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI removed my main panel this morning, which meant I lost all the launcher icons like the Terminal, places, system, etc. I right-clicked and selected New Panel, but when I select Add to Panel, it doesn't offer me the ability to put these items back on. The list included Clock, Weather, Garbage and Desktop, but doesn't include the others. I can't relaunch the Terminal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as without terminal or application access, obviously the my system functionality is pretty limited.
