General :: Can't Change File Attributes Again Opening It As Users Above
Oct 23, 2010
I have a MP3 player which is owned by Root. I have tried the following: in terminal - chown as both my usual log-in and root operation not permitted. I ran chown as both su, root, and myself. In Nautilus - I can't change any of the file attributes again opening it as any of the users above. I used to be able to copy files over to the MP3 player but not the Sandisk but not I can't copy or do anything to the files on both.

GS 8.71 on f11. Using the eps2eps tool, some of a files colors get changed to RGB from CMYK. I see no flagging capable of changing this behavior. Is there another way or something I'm missing? Or is there a better place to ask about Ghostscript?

I need to allow my Windows users to be able to check off "Read-Only" or "Hidden" attributes on our Samba share. Currently its not allowing me to do so.
After searching online, I set the map readonly, hidden and archive option to "yes". Then my entire files were hidden.
I'm having a hard time understanding the concept of the "map" option in smb.conf

Does anybody know how to get attributes for a video file from the command line? For instance I'd like to get the video file running time. I've looked all over and I can't find out how to do this; the "file" command shows some data but not running time. I'm sure there has to be a way.

due to an exercise in Operating Systems I have to do the following: There are 6 users, user1, user2 ... user6 with home directories /users/user1 ... users/user6. User1 to user3 belong to group1, user4 to user6 belong to group2. The System Administrator wants to change the privilege* only to users 1, 2 and 3 to execute the file /bin/xxx. Which are the commands he has to type in order to achieve the previous?*I'm not sure if this is the right translation. What I have come till now is: Code: $ chgrp group1 <name_of_file> but it seems too simple to be right.

I ran a program that writes continuously from 1 every line. After some time I ran '/dev/null > temp' Problem1: bash: /dev/null: Permission denied (Yes, the permissions of /dev/null are correct ... crw-rw-rw-. I removed and created it again, but no change) I used 'cat temp' to see the contents and first few lines deleted (working correctly). Problem2: I can't open the file (with double click or with any graphical editor like gedit)
Apart from these problems, I have another question... Is there a way to trim a active log file to say 80% without affecting any logs that server might be writing.

I got myself curious on the possibility to change user's permission to any command, or at least giving other users some command line "power".
It all started a few days ago, when another user here, had a problem so that the computer wasn't answering.
So, after waiting a while, chose to hit the Reset button and start the computer again.
Considering this situation, I thought myself that it would have been better to restart the computer, through command line, on any terminal (F1-F6). Anyway, this user is no administrator, thus wouldn't have permission to use the code...
So, is it possible to let other users to use such commands, in order to safe rebooting the system, without logging as root?

I am running an Ubuntu(10.04) box and I am attempting to understand an error in a program.I don't have access to the source of this program, but I know it isn't working properly because it cannot find a particular file. I was wondering if it would be possible to monitor what file are accessed(more specifically denied access) by a process. My first idea was to breakpoint on fopen, but I didn't have any success.
