Ubuntu Security :: Avoid To Rewrite The Password Again And Again - Start With Superuser Permissions
Oct 16, 2010
Having to write my user password every time I want to do anything. I DO know I'm doing something risky for the system, that's why I have Linux. Is there a way to avoid to rewrite the password again and again, like start with superuser permissions?

However, configured a website on a dedicated server using WHM/cPanel. The site was uploaded using the master account for the website.
The security issue is public users are able to upload files on to my server via the website. They could even access the root and execute whatever they want on the server.
I have consulted with 2-3 Linux experts. According to them, the PHP user has rights to execute anything on the server or upload & store files in whichever folder they want.
Can I protect my folders to avoid file uploads via the website. The application has security vulnerabilites. However, I want to prevent hackers to enter my site until the vulnerabilities are fixed.

I've moved a web site from one server to another.I'm also moving the domain name to the new server. In Apache I've got the web site configured up and running with no problems. What I'd like to know if this is possible. I'm wanting to avoid a complete web site rewrite. I've looked into mod_rewrite but I don't think this is right.I only want the web site to look aesthetically pleasing. So if it's not possible so be it. (I'm not a programmer but do have access to the code)

I have a regular password and a masterpassword, but sometimes I am being asked for a superuserpassword? I have no scripting experience and a very basic idea of how linux works. I am trying to get enough of a handle on this OS, so I can use it comfortably.

I have never set up any other password, yet I'm asked for Root password and therefore locked out from superuser. This is my own personal computer at home and there is no other O/S installed. My password works for almost anything else I've needed it for so far but I can't install my printer driver, or access su, or any of its other related privileges

On my dual-boot system, 11.4 and win7, Iped out the Doc and DL folders in my home directory and replaced 'em with links to the ones on the windows side. It works great except for one thing: When I open Dolphin in superuser mode and change the permissions to make myself the owner of those folders, the change doesn't take. Is there a special trick to it?GEFPS: I plan to use openSUSE as my main OS, but it's easier to keep my data on the NTFS partition, because Linux speaksindows better than than Windows speaks Linux. Besides, that's where my data already lives

We use a linux (centOS I believe) cluster for our research. My professor somehow forgot the new password he set for root, and now can't login as 'su'. What is the way (or best way) to reset the root password without damaging something. I don't know whether it's even setup for 'sudo'. What will the procedure with and without 'sudo'?

This is an old question asked many times, which, however, is NEVER answered directly in any manual I've checked. So...I'm writing a bash install script (instead of a rpm or .deb package) that must be run by a normal user. change to superuser (asking for password and receiving it) and the rest of the script to be executed in the superuser mode in order to install what I mean to install.I know how `sudo ...` or `su `root"..."` or `gnome-terminal -e ...` can achieve this purpose by creating certain batch files and then give them as argument to these commands. That's NOT what I'm asking, however.I want to know how I can make the script interactively switch to superuser mode and go on running the rest of the script (can be a lot of code) in that mode. I don't mind if it oens a separate terminal window to do that; just how can that be achieved?

I have to say, I'm a little astonished at how anxious people are to bypass password checks on networks, all for the convenience of having things come up automatically. But given the world as we find it, I'm seeking a different approach.
I have an OpenVPN network. It works fine, but for my laptop, I've selected a client certificate that requires a password, so that if it falls into nefarious hands, the thief will not have immediate access to the VPN.
I'm trying not to have any data at all on the laptop (yes, a waste of a 500GB drive). So I want the VPN up even before I log in through the GUI.
It would be nice if the boot-up sequence would pause for the openvpn start script to ask for this password. I see the script contains a line "# X-Interactive: true" which I understand from documentation is supposed to accomplish this. But it doesn't. OpenVPN simply fails to start, which is better than the alternative, but a pain.
I have already disabled the splash screen (having been around Linux for over ten years, I am more comfortable seeing boot-up messages anyway, though even on this x86 they flash on so quickly I'm not sure I'm really gaining anything).
What am I missing?

So, I'm not quite sure what the difference is? Is it that sudo allows you to "borrow" superuser privileges, whilst su allows you to actually log in as superuser? Also, when I sudo [command] and get prompted for a password, after I input it, things work just fine, but if I su, and then get prompted for a password, I can't log in as superuser... Why is this?

I have recently started using Ubuntu, so far I am quite satisfied with the switch in OS. This time my question has more to do with privacy, govt. sniffing of private/personal communications, Internet censorship and what to do about these issues. I live in a South American country where the govt. wants to impose Internet censorship such as the one currently in place in Iran, Cuba or China. They plan to set up a single node for all Internet communications out-going and in-coming. I would not be surprised if they are already monitoring people`s communications illegally.
1. what can be done to avoid being censored? they will be able to monitor my email accounts, facebook, twitter and so on. They want to force the Internet Service Providers and telecom companies to censor their users, since those companies will be responsible for the content of the emails, sms, tweeter messages, etc.
2. What can I do to avoid their censorship of certain contents which are critical of the govt. or contrary to the regime`s views? I need to be able to read what other people are saying beyond the borders of this country. We can`t tolerate living with this ban. Certain contents coming from abroad will be blocked.
3. How can I protect my email and bank operations? Is a proxy server an option? I really don`t know what a proxy server is, how much it would help us avoid govt. sniffing in private matters for political reasons.
4. what additional measures can be taken? is using encrypted messages an option to communicate with my relatives in order to prevent the govt. from reading my emails?

Google just announced the release of Jarlsberg, a microblogging app specifically designed to be full of bugs and security flaws. The app is being released through Google Labs and Google Code University as a security tutorial for coders. Google is encouraging programmers to try their hands at exploiting weaknesses in Jarlsberg as a way of teaching them how to avoid similar vulnerabilities in their own code.

after installing Debian, I typed the command:
Quote:
update-rc.d -f exim4 remove
to avoid automatic start of this mail server (I use qmail). After several months, I did a reboot and exim is started! Looking at the history, I found this command:
Quote: dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config
Maybe this command has restored the init script of exim?

I know this has probably been asked too many times here but I need to secure my emails. Personal matters of course. But yeah. I use the program "Password and Encryption Keys" to generate a key to sign my emails with but I do not know what to do. To be blunt, I'm stupid when it comes to this. IF not, steps in creating a key? and giving it (my public key) to the significant other? Finding where both keys are? Implementing it into Thunderbird? If it helps any here's some extra information: Ubuntu distro: Ubuntu 10.04 Email client: Thunderbird

I already posted a topic similar to this concerning the Desktop OS version, but this deals with the Netbook because unlike the Desktop, the Netbook is less cooperative. Allow me to elaborate: Today (or rather yesterday since it's not after midnight where I am), I changed my password because I was hopelessly confounded about how to get my Wireless Network card up and running after it had been installed and I was allowing my dad to use it. This issue has since been resolved, however...
When I chose my password during the original installation, there was no mention of it being "too simple." This is where the Desktop OS and the Netbook OS differ. The desktop will let me change it in the terminal without any errors. The Netbook will not. When I've attempted to revert it back to the original, it will not let me do so in the User Profile or in the Terminal. The Passwords and Encryption Keys application also does not appear to help.
So now even after I've changed it to a different "complicated" password I am still prompted to insert two different passwords since I changed my user password but I am unable to change the password I input during the installation. A bit screwy methinks. This is extremely important. I'd like to know how to change the original installation password.
If I can't change the main password on my laptop then this is a serious potential security breach just waiting to happen (especially since it's on a laptop and I will be hauling it around with me) and I will most likely install a different OS if this isn't resolved --- It would be very unfortunate since I spent the whole day fixing it and I really enjoy the interface. Luckily I can live with this on my Desktop since I'm not going to be hauling it around with me everywhere when the school year starts.
