Fedora :: Yum Cachedir Change Not Taking Effect?

i have changed the cachedir for yum because i don't have enough space left for updates (500MB free on /). i got the "Insufficient space in download directory" error msg.so i've changed the chachedir in /etc/yum.conf like this:cachedir=/media/OS/.temp/var/cache/yum/$basearch/$releaseveros is another partition on my hdd with 17GB free spacewhen i tried to update after this i got the error msg again"Insufficient space in download directory /media/OS/.temp/var/cache/yum/i386/12/updates/packages"it seems like yum is still using /var/cache for downloading and not /media/os/.tempi have double checked with df and yum it's still using /var/cache

I have 2 Oracle users that generate .tmp files under /var/tmp. By default, the files have the permissions 644. Now, a need has arisen whereby the files created by these users have to have the permission bits as 664. Obviously, I changed the UMASK value for these users from 022 to 02. But the files are still getting created with 644 as the permission.
I tried restarting the application as I read that a relogin is required for the UMASK change to take effect. Even that hasn't helped.

I have a directory /models/ with the permissions
drw-rw-rw- 2 owner developers 4096 Jun 24 15:13 models
these were set with
sudo chmod -R 0666 *
My user has developers as the primary group (the same group as the file), but I cannot access the directory via the terminal or ftp.
[myUser@machine]$ id myUser
uid=503(myUser) gid=505(developers) groups=505(developers)
$ cd models
-bash: cd: models: Permission denied
I had the same problem before the directory belonged to my group, and I even went so far as to restart the server, without any luck. How do I set permissions to this directory so that I and other members of the group developers can access it?

I have upgraded to 10.4 and and after try to install mac look in ubuntu.My screen start flickering, I found it this due to in system => preference => appearance => effect become no effect automatically (as each and every time I select extra effect)After some time.for changing this setting i need to turn off the computer and restart then after i can do it i.e. change effect to extra effect. I have a script which lists all the SID listed in /etc/oratab and then after the user select which SID to set, it calls another script to set the SID and other environment variables.
The script runs just fine and does all that is expected, but the variables are not set permanently, can't figure out why. Everything works fine when I run the setsid.sh out of this script.

1. The resolution change (from 1024*768 to 1680*1050)could not be saved to /etc/X11/xorg.conf2. After I manually changed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf, it could not take effect when I restart my suse. On restarting, it firstly 1680*1050, then jump back to 1024*768.How I resolved it: 1. When click "Save to X configuration", save the xorg.conf to user directory, then manually copy it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf using root privilege. (sudo cp ...) 2. change the resolution to 1680*1050 in nvdia-settings, then click "apply", after it takes effect, go to "control center" - "display", you will find the resolution here has been changed to 1680*1050, then press apply, restart suse, you get 1680*1050.Some details:(1) I have a nvdia GeForce 6150SE on board video card, and suse11.2(2) I installed nvdia driver through NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE

Originally my ubuntu uses official source list as apt-get update target, obviously it is very slow, these days I find a source mirror in my own region, I want to replace original one with current mirror.
Although everything works OK but when I try to update a new software, it still downloads from original official websites, still slow, in fact it can be much faster if get from local regional.

I have pc/os linux 2009 installed and I recently got the following message while trying to boot up my system:

*An automatic file system check (fsck) of the root filesystem failed. A manual fsck must be performed, then the system restarted. The fsck should be performed in maintenance mode with the root filesystem mounted in read-only mode.
*The root filesystem is currently mounted in read-only mode. A maintenance shell will now be started. after performing system maintenance press Control-D to terminate the maintenance shell and restart the system.
Give root password for maintenance:
The problem is, when I enter my password I get an incorrect password prompt. How can I change my password so that a manual fsck can start? Why did this message error message appear in the first place?

I have f11 installed on as a vm on virtualbox 3.0.4. It takes forever to boot. I modified /etc/udev/udev.conf and changed udev_log="info" to udev_log="debug" and rebooted the system. When the progress bars came up I hit Esc and watched the boot process. Udev runs through approximately 7-800 items before it ever tries to load anything else. Is there a way that I can change this? I have been through the forums and can't find anything similar to this. I thought maybe that it was the "Floppy" issue so I went ahead and blacklisted the floppy drive (as this is a vm I don't have access to the BIOS) anyway.

4 GB DDR2 Apacar 800 Mhz RAM
Gigabyte ATI Radeon 5450 HD GPU
I'm using Fedora 14 KDE but on startup it uses 40% of my processor. I'm using the proprietary 10.12 AMD ATI Linux Driver. I'm only using blur and woobly windows effect and I'm using OpenGL. Kubuntu/Suse never gave me this trouble. Even GNOME doesn't only KDE and fedora 14 is troubling me.

I've installed yesterday Fedora 14, 64 bit... Now I wanted to setup the nice graphic effect, but I can't find a way how to setup the minimize effect. I've installed additionally Emerald, ccsm and fusion-icon. I'm starting compiz using Fusion-icon. Just in the ccsm menus and icons I really can't find anymore how to setup those nice things like the magic lamp or there was also an effect which makes the window fold on minimizing (or closing).
And where did the burn effect go? It used to be there at some point in the past? And for closing effects and I didn't find nothing at all? Is there another configuration tool, besides ccsm, do I need to edit some config files in order to setup these things, should I install something more or nowadays. Compiz is losing its effects? Why all the topics regarding graphic effects are only on Ubuntu? Let's write about Fedora too !!

Really get annoyed when mouse is moved to the top right corner then the window is switched to the application view/chooser. I want to get rid of this effect and modified following key in gconf-editor as suggested in [URL]apps/compiz/plugins/scale/allscreens/option, change initiate_edge from TopRight to None. but nothing happens on the effect. The top right corner effect still there

Anybody notice a slowdown in their boot times? I have had F11 (64 bit) running for about three days and it is taking twice as long to boot as when I first installed. I have not done much other than configure my wireless printer and change a few icons. I have Compiz cube effects running but I did that right away and it made no difference in my system speed. If anything I thought I should be booting faster after disabling a few things in the start up menu that I dont need.
I went from about a 30 second total boot to almost a minute to the login screen

After fixing network issue (change to vanilla kernel) and configuring alsa sound drivers, I realise that I may be spending some time doing some more config before putting my machine to hardcore use!
So, is it possible or can anyone recommend a program that can do an image of the hdd which I can save on an external drive and install/reinstall it on hard drive if i ever need to?

I switched to Fedora from Ubuntu about a month ago, and I've been very happy so far. But today I started the upgrade to Fedora 15, and something isn't right. I used the preupgrade method, and the package download took a respectable 30-40 minutes, then I was prompted to reboot my machine. I did so, about 4 hours ago. It took about 2 hours to get to the point where it says it's installing the packages, and 2 hours to get to where it is as I write this, at 116 completed packages out of 1634.
I'm pretty sure this isn't normal for ANY distribution. The machine itself is about 6 months old, so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. I'm considering interrupting the upgrade and doing a clean install, but I was wondering, is there anything I can do before resorting to the clean install option?

I just want to find out if anybody else is having a similar issue before I start trying to disable services one by one. When I boot in to F15, everything runs fine up to were it starts loading the CUPS module then it hangs for about 2 to 3 minutes, the next thing to load is Samba shares. So it could be either of these or it could have nothing to do with them. Just to add that I made 100% sure that all my samba shares mount fine and are online and have no shares mounting in my fstab file.

Using Compiz's animation plugin, only the open and close effects work. When any entries are listed under the "Animation Selection" for Minimize, Focus, or Shade; the animations do not play; and I receive a libnotify error: "Animation settings mismatch in 'Animation Selection' list for __<Minimize or Focus or Shade>___ event."This happens even with the Animation Selection values reset and even the entire Animation configuration reset. I use the Gconf backend, but this also occurs with a file-based configuration. This has never worked for me.

How do I prevent eth1 from being able to overwrite the default gateway that eth0 has already set?!? I read that one can create route-* files in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ directory to setup static default routes.But those seems to require one to know the IP address of the gateway, but in my case the ISP's gateway is served via DHCP and so it could vary from day to day. I have and IBM e-Server, with 256RAM, however when I force the fedora installation to be perfomr in grapgical mode, Anaconda return a message that say that I dont have enoght Memory to perform the graphical installation. To my uderstanding It requiere 192MB of Memeory for a graphical installation.
What I'm doing wrong?, or is that the vmlinuz is booting into RAM and taking most of the space?

I am using Opera 10.60 browser for the past one month. Generally it use to take about 20 seconds to startup but since yesterday its taking more than 40. I don't know about the exact duration but certainly its taking a lot of time now.
