I used this command on Fedora11 for panning on my Acer Aspire One 150 it works but the next time that i restart the OS i have to issue the command again!

I just recently purchased a DELL PowerEdge 2850 and have tried installing CentOS 5.4 on it. After the install completes and it does a first boot I get the following error on the DELL console: PROC 1ERROR, PROC 2ERROR E07F0. The monitor remains black and the system hangs. Just out of curiosity I installed Fedora 11 on it to see if it was a hardware problem. Fedora installed and booted no problem. I rebooted with Fedora installed several times and left it running for 24 hours. Everything is working great. Is there something I am missing in the CentOS 5.4 install?

When trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).
These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?

I had Fedora 7 and Windows-XP dual operating system. Few weeks ago, there was GRUB error. Now I want to install Fedora 14, but before it I want to back up all data in one external hard drive. I used Fedora 13 live-CD I could access all the drive formatted as NTFS, but I couldn't access /home and the drive formatted (ext2) and owned by the user-name.
Please, inform if there is any idea to copy my files that remains in the home folder. (I can see them but copying is prevented)
I just found some strange behaviour with xrandr. I've got a dual screen setup (both 1680x1050) on which I want to span my desktop. I'm using the ati (amd) proprietary driver from livna to do this. I edited my xorg.conf to include the 'Virtual' line under screen.
When I add this to the "Screen" section:
The driver breaks and I get a resolution of 1400x900 and still not the option to span my desktop.
When I change that to read Virtual 1680 2100
It all works fine but I have to have my desktops on top of each other.
I work with FC14 and a AXLE nVidia GeForce FX 5500 256 MB Graphic Card AGP 8x 256MB.

Can I change something, so I can see on TV the full hight on my monitor screen with the same nvidia drivers installed?
If I remain 'connected' (with the KVM) to the linux machine the gnome screen saver cuts in and the system remains 'as is' until 'woken up' with the mouse or keyboard. However, if I switch to another machine using the KVM, within a short time (maybe even minute or two) the linux machine goes dead. Now it has not crashed, as I can log in from a remote machine and do anything I need from a terminal, but the machine seems not to respond. I can't even use ctrl-alt-fn to switch to a console screen.
I initially tried entering telinit 3 from a remote machine but it made no apparent difference. However, if after telinit 3 I then killed the Xorg process and later issued a telinit 5 the X server restarted, but with a curious black 'notch' at the top of the screen. I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS graphics card. I am now adding the backtrace from Xorg.0.log. It seems that when the KVM switches to another machine for more than a very short time the X server crashes.

I've installed additionally Emerald, ccsm and fusion-icon. I'm starting compiz using Fusion-icon. Just in the ccsm menus and icons I really can't find anymore how to setup those nice things like the magic lamp or there was also an effect which makes the window fold on minimizing (or closing).
And where did the burn effect go? It used to be there at some point in the past? And for closing effects and I didn't find nothing at all? Is there another configuration tool, besides ccsm, do I need to edit some config files in order to setup these things, should I install something more or nowadays. Compiz is losing its effects? This is something that I started to notice in F12 and it appears to be the case as well in F13. Any changes that I make to my desktop wallpaper in Gnome don't stay in effect after a reboot. Any ideas as to what is going on here? I don't mind the default blue swirly thing in F13, but I at least want the style change from scale to center to stick.
Choosing the 'set as default' option doesn't seem to help either, as that changes the screen you see at the Gnome login. Once I log into my account the default desktop wallpaper is still there.
I noticed that any CPU load, while using Rakarrack guitar effects, causes the sound to distort and it generates loads of noise. This actually happens when using anything while running Jack audio. If I'm recording, I get tons of noise on the recorded track when I play it back (and live when monitoring) because any CPU usage seems to interfere with the signals. It even does it live in the playthrough (monnitor).
I realized it had to do with CPU usage when I noticed a pattern with the noise correlating to the plasma CPU monitor widget I had running originally. The noise refreshed when the monitor did. Since then, I noticed that anything that puts a slight load on the system will cause this disruption (even moving a window around, or anything in the background processes).
Anyone who is experienced with Jack audio, and possibly rakarrack as well, know the cause to this? I figured loading a low resource WM and eliminating unneeded processes can help but it doesn't since the recording program itself, while recording, is enough to cause this problem. (I know this because playing the guitar in Rakarrack, without recording and just using Jack to run the sound to the speakers, doesn't have constant noise but when recording, there is a constant noise)
This is my first day with Debian, I have used other distros, and am a long time linux user. My HP D 1600 series is recognized, but when I try to print a test msg. it says sent, but the printer remains idle. I have tried everything I know. In the past when having a printer problem I have installed HPLIP-gui and removed the printer then re-installed it. That has not worked and I cannot even remove the printer.
When I boot without the AC cable plugged in the Power Applet says I am on AC power (but the notebook is of course running on battery power). Which is bad because I don't know how much battery time still remains. Strangely, when I boot on AC Power and then remove the AC cable both the fact that battery power is used and the remaining battery time is shown correctly. Also when I boot into battery power and then plug in the AC cable it correctly shows that the battery is charging and how long it takes until fully charged. I use Ubuntu 10.10, 32bit on an Acer Aspire One 751 if that helps. The problem has also existed in Ubuntu 10.04 and I hoped the update would solve it but it did not.

I have a problem with my Debian squeeze system. After I have run some CPU-intensive application for a while the system becomes sluggish. Ok, maybe one would expect that. But. The system remains sluggish even after that process has been killed and then top shows high cpu usage from unrelated processes and a high %sy percentage as well. I don't really know where to begin solving this problem except I've checked that this is specifically related to (at least) CPU use as opposed to heavy memory use or IO (by running an application with low mem/no io but high cpu use). I am running the latest standard kernel from squeeze, 2.6.32-5-686. Also, thing is, I remember having similar problems with other Linux distros before, where for example gzipping a large file would cause the same. I did not have similar problems on {Net,Open}BSD, so a hardware fault seems an unlikely reason to me.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot, apparently any Linux (Ubuntu and CloneZilla), I see the letters Code: ^]]B scroll pass, over and over again. This represents the down key as when I try to do anything the down key is held down. This occurs during boot on Ubuntu (once I get to the login screen it stops and does not happen). This does not happen at the GRUB screen or in Windows. It also occurs during the entire CloneZilla process and Ubuntu alternative install process (making both of these impossible)
I can't find any reason for this to happen and have been using both CloneZilla and Ubuntu for a long time before this happened. Does anyone know what I could try to fix this.
