Fedora Installation :: Erratic Install Results W/initrd - Custom Spins With Custom Drivers - Modules?

Dec 28, 2009

Just spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.

The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]

My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.

The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.

Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?

And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?

How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Dell N5010 - Unable To Install Fedora On Unallocated Space

Sep 13, 2010

My laptop is currently running on Windows 7 Ultimate. I have a 320 GB HDD, which I have partitioned as follows. C: Drive as Windows 40 GB capacity and successively partitioned the rest of the drives for 50 GB capacity and left an unallocated space of 67 GB for fedora 13 x64 installation. The problem that I am facing is, that I am unable to install fedora on this unallocated space..even though I am checking the option for "Creating custom Layout". When I check the option for "Creating Custom Layout" Ive been shown with the only option to install fedora on the unused space on the HDD which is around 265 GB. I am also attaching a screen shot of my disk management. how I can install Fedora on this unallocated space of 67 GB?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Unable To Logout Or Shutdown From KDE?

Jan 31, 2011

For some reason in the last few days I can no longer logout of KDE, nor will it let me shutdown the system. The only way out is to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and then shutdown from there. Weird thing is other users can. For me the logout box just disappears and I carry on working or if effects are enabled, the screen blurs and I carry on working. After this the logout box doesn't come back up until I have restarted X (logged out).

I have tried disabling the desktop effects to no availe and I have looked in the messages / kdm logs. So far the only thing I can find is in KDM.log

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Internal error: Could not resolve keysym XF86TouchpadOn
> Internal error: Could not resolve keysym XF86TouchpadOff

I have no idea if this is at all relevant but there are several threads from Google relating to this and GDM, although no cures as far as I can tell.

I would rather not delete my ~/.kde folder again if at all possible as it takes ages to reset everything back to normal.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Unable 32bit Repository On A 64 Bit System?

Nov 25, 2009

I am trying to kick start learning programming for Android.I try to install Android SDK(1.5, 1.6, and 2.0). However, the emulator keeps crashing with "Segmentation Fault" error. Since Android emulator is a binary only 32 bit executable, I suspect that I am missing some 32 bit library, so I tried to install qemu. However, since my installation is 64 bit, I can only install 64 bit qemu. how to enable 32bit repository on a 64 bit system? I don't know if I should use i586 or i686.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Unable To Boot After Kernel Update

Feb 11, 2011

I am unable to boot my Fedora 14 after last nights kernel update. When I start the boot up and hit F2 the system fails after outputting the line : Starting vservers of type 'default'. At some point the console displays an error message :

serial8250 : Too much work for irq17

How do I restore my previous version? I know some people have suggested in the past - just modify the grub.conf but how? When I boot off the cd I only get access to the liveuser disk. I need to have access to my own /boot/grub/grub.conf file.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Unable To Use 14 (64) Newest Patches With RANDR?

Jun 13, 2011

I have been running tomcat as a web server for quite a while. One particular application requires OpenOffice to be up a server for document conversion. Under Fedora 14 (and NOT before), I had to add Xvfb to the mix so OpenOffice could run properly headless. I have a script to start/stop/restart tomcat (S99tomcat) which has been working flawlessly until I did the most recent updates to Fedora. The script still works fine (S99tomcat start) at boot time. However when I invoke stop and then start it due to an application change (or just restart) - openoffice fails to come up whining about xrand

Here is the line I use to bring up OpenOffice
/usr/lib64/openoffice.org3/program/soffice -nologo -headless -accept=socket,host=localhost,port=9999,tcpNoDelay= 1;urp;StarOffice.ServiceManager

It took a lot of research to get the above right (open office parameters are sensitive to order on the command line and quotes need to be put around the parameters as there is a semicolon embedde in the accept parameters.

Anyway - here is the new error

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1.0".
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1.0".
Xvfb is running on Display ":1"

If I reboot the machine this same command set will run fine. This just happened when I applied the newest patches for all my software (normally I do this weekly).

Fedora Installation :: Custom Fedora On Usb - Does Not Boot From The 1GB Usb Sticks

Nov 10, 2009

A custom image of Fedora 6 was built on a USB stick of size 2GB.

The size of the image is 546MB and i need to build the image on a 1 GB USB stick.

-The partition on the disk is bootable and I have a grub bootloader

- BIOS is configured to boot from the USB stick.

The same set of files are copied to the 2GB usb sticks and the 1GB usb sticks.

The system boots out of the 2GB Usb disk but does not boot from the 1GB usb sticks.

I am not sure if this issue is related to the usb stick, which i dont think so. I tried it on a different USB stick of size 1GB and it does not work as well.

Fedora Installation :: F12 Partitioning - Create A Custom Partition Layout?

Nov 29, 2009

I have several partitions on my hard drive, and like to use the 'Create Custom Layout' option during the installation process, to make sure that I don't loose any of my existing partitions or the data on them.

I have attempted a minimal F12 installation from Fedora 12 DVD. But the 'Create Custom Layout' option is not an option in the menu.

How do I install F12 and tell anaconda exactly which partitions I want to use and format?

My current working partition layout is shown in the attached screenshot.

I want to use the following custom partition layout during the initial F12 installation:

Code:
/dev/sda2 / Fedora-12-root
/dev/sda3 SWAP
/dev/sda11 /var/log/ var-log
/dev/sda12 /tmp tmp

This allows me to share existing partitions between my current working F10 root partition, and the newly-installed F12 root partition. So if there are problems with the new F12 installation, I still have a working F10 system to fall back on.

The other partitions with data on will be mounted when the intiall installation has been completed

Fedora Installation :: Partition Deletion - Create Custom Layout

Aug 17, 2011

I am trying to install fedora15, my devices are as follows:
/dev/sda1- contains windows recovery
/dev/sda2- contains windows vista
/dev/sda3- free space
/dev/sda4- where fedora10 is existing.

Basically I want to scrap the fedora 10 in /dev/sda4 and install fed15 on the place (ext3). During the installation process fedora asked me, Which type of installation you want? I choose 'create custom layout'.

Then in the next window that appeared I choose /dev/sda4. Then it gives me four options like
Create Edit Delete Reset

I want to know what does this Delete mean. What will it do, will is erase all the older partitions within /dev/sda4 i made for fedora10 (previously I made three partitions /boot, swap, /) or will erase /dev/sda4 itself. I am scared to continue installation further.

Fedora X86/64bit :: What Would Be Potential Problems During The Installation And/or Post Installation

Dec 28, 2010

I'm using couple of Intel Core i7 based workstations. Here is one such example:Processor: Core i7-870 (Lynfield) Motherboard: Gigabyte P55A-UD6RAM: Corsair DDR3-1600 - 8GB (4 sticks). Graphics: Sapphire Toxic ATI 5850 - 2GB - DDR5Am always used to 32-bit Linux installation. Now I would like to go with the FC14 64-bit on this workstation. My question is:a) How different would be a FC 64-bit compared to 32-bit (8GB RAM issues I faced in Windows 7 32-bit)b) What would be potential problems during the installation and/or post installation. I get these questions in my mind because of Motherboard and Graphics card support and also thinking about applications (issues) on FC14.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Installation Failure With 11 X64

I know Python quite well but I have no idea why None is being passed as the first argument to self.admin.setpassUser when a non-None value is needed. The other curious thin is that the trace does not show the call to setpassUser() from the entry after it but rather to 'getPassAlgo(). Needless to say this but has kept me from installing Fedora 11 on my 64-bit machine.
