I need to install a lvm2 group with encryption and have the /boot file stored within. Is this possible in Fedora's graphical installer? I know it can be achieved in Arch(I know I'll need grub2, I assume that's coming in Fedora 12) I can always install it separately.
View 6 RepliesI have installed my Fedora on a LVM2 group and alocated a total of 10 GB. Which of course is abusrdly and ridiculously low space. As a matter of fact I did even more stupid thing - I allocated 4 (four) gigabytes for /swap !
I am complete novice in Linux and fedora, but I want to extend my /root lvm drive with at least 20 gb.
I burned parted magic on a CD and tried to manage the LVM2 grop, but it said LVM2 was not supported in parted magic. And so I tried the Fedora Partition Manager and got lost in what and how. I tried reducing the /swap space and increasing the / space, but failed - I could only select zero Mbytes for swap space, and had the only option of decreasing space for /, which is really not what I want to do.
What I want to do is extend the space for the whole LVM2 Logical Group , which is now 10 GB total for / and /swap. Or at least I'd like to reduce my /swap size and increase my / size.
I have read that when using xfs with lvm2, prior to kernel 2.6.29 write barriers are by deffault disabled.As i want to migrate /home to xfs (and create a external partition to hold some data in xfs too) i was thinking in compile a custom kernel 2.6.30 or higher from [URL].I have read the wiki, all the warnings , and that for compile a kernel.org kernel you should use the Linux Kernel in a Nutshel guide/book. But i don't really know if would worth do that only to have write barrier support , more when in one month i will buy a ups to be sure i can shutdown the pc well if the power goes out.Should i enable write barriers on xfs with lvm2 ,although going to have a ups ?

The size of the image is 546MB and i need to build the image on a 1 GB USB stick.
-The partition on the disk is bootable and I have a grub bootloader
- BIOS is configured to boot from the USB stick.
The same set of files are copied to the 2GB usb sticks and the 1GB usb sticks.
The system boots out of the 2GB Usb disk but does not boot from the 1GB usb sticks.
I am not sure if this issue is related to the usb stick, which i dont think so. I tried it on a different USB stick of size 1GB and it does not work as well.
Just spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.
The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.
The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.
Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?
And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?
How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?
I have machine that I used to VNC to on my network with Remote Desktop Viewer from my Fedora 12. When I first connected I checked the checkbox that I wanted to store the pw. Now the pw on the other machine has changed but Remote Desktop Viewer does not ask for a new password, it just gives me a black screen, like I am connected but I can't see anything. I'd like to know if anyone knows where this pw data is stored on the system so I can start fresh. I already tried uninstalling Remote Desktop Viewer and installing it again.

Using the gnome settings, I managed to set it to switch with Alt+Shift (windows style), but I really want to limit it to Right Alt + Right Shift, but that option isn't available in the gnome wizard. I've opened gconf-editor and found the kbd configuration, but trying to add 'r' or 'right_' prefixes to the keys didn't help.

NEW is able to read but not write group files, whereas all the other users in the group can read and write to the group files. The permissions for the group files indicate that all members of group should have write permission -rwxrwxr-x

Don't know if it matters, but both OLD and NEW write to the GROUP files over an internet connection. why NEW can't write to GROUP files? Is there a maximum number of members in a group that I might have exceeded?
I've been wanting to do this for a while and after upgrading some of my pc components I decided I would finally try to dual boot with full disk encryption on both windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. I managed to encrypt the windows drive with truecrypt and that worked. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the alternate cd and everything but /boot is in an encrypted LVM. Each OS is on a separate SATA drive the windows is on sda1 and ubuntu /boot is sdb1.
To setup the dual boot I started out following the tutorial [url] but its for XP and versions of ubuntu that use grub not grub 2. I ran dd as posted and saved the files it produced from truecrypt. I then ran into some problems with grub reinstallation so I simply reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch again. This put grub 2 on the computer. I've managed to get it to add a Windows 7 option.
However, when the option is selected truecrypt comes up and says that the bootloader is corrupted and that I need to use the repair CD I burned before I encrypted the drive. My question is does anyone have any experience dual booting using Truecrypt on Windows 7 and LUKS/dm-crypt on Ubuntu 9.10 with grub 2? And how would I get the boot menu to work? I'd rather not reinstall but if I have to I have images from right before I encrypted so it wouldn't be the end of the world.
To structure the layout of my partitions. I'm installing Windows 7, Backtrack 4 R2 and Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop on my laptop. I've got a 500 GB HDD named sda.
I've already installed Windows 7. It's my opinion that it's easiest to begin with Windows.
The partitions look like this right now:
The Windows installation is unencrypted and I want it to stay that way. It's only there in case my laptop gets stolen, I've installed various nasty things there.
The Backtrack 4 installation will also be given 100 GB space, I want it to be encrypted. The Ubuntu installation should get the rest of all the remaining space and preferably be encrypted but it's not 100% necessary.
How I should partition this? There's a limit on 4 primary partitions? How do I circumvent this? There should be one dedicated GRUB partition which will point to each of the installations own boot loaders?
I am investigating full disk encryption and have made a DD copy of the hard drive which has been encrypted, this DD file is stored on my computer for analysis.
First question is - Anyone know how i can access data in this DD file even though its been encrypted?
Second question - Is there a DD command where i can image the systems memory? I ask this because when a system is turned on, to get past the pre-boot authentication stage you need a password. From what i understand, this password will be passed in to ram when power is applied to the system. Making a copy of the memory will also copy the password?
I just made a really nasty mistake. My system has an LVM for the main system using drive /dev/sda. There is a second LVM using drive /dev/sdb which was actually an old drive that I was using as a backup. In a fit of idiocy, I wiped the partition table on /dev/sdb. Which means I lost my backups, but hopefully only those. I can live with that. (I actually wanted to wipe the partition on /dev/sdc, which was an external drive...)
However, I now cannot boot. On boot, GRUB comes up, and Fedora 12 starts to boot. Which seems to be proof that I didn't delete my real system, since the old drive had an older version of Fedora (10 or 11) on it. This boot process dies during the fsck. The stock F11 kernel is very buggy on my system, so I built a new one. But I can't install it. My Kernel does not appear in the /boot partition, and does not appear as vmlinuz anywhere.

Having spent weeks perfecting my Ubuntu the way I like it, I was wondering if there is a way of preserving it as a either a liveCD or USB flash drive, with a view of using it on other PC's activated upon start up?
Possibly (under the USB option) with the option of launching from the flash drive itself, or installing onto a PC's hard drive.So, in essence, it would be a liveCD but custom made to reflect the way my Ubuntu looks and feels now? Is there any easy-to-use software available to perform such a task?

As per the best docs I have found on mirroring [URL], I am going to keep the log file on a separate physical volume, however I can't seem to find anywhere a good reference for how much size I need to save for the log file. Everything says "small," but "small" doesn't really help in the real world :-).
I have plenty of space on the 3rd pv but want to leave as much of it as possible for other stuff. Should I leave 32MB ? 500MB ? 1GB?

I'm trying to setup a print server in Fedora 13. I've made it using CUPS and when I send something to print from a Windows PC it goes ok. My main concern is to know where is the spool file stored when a file is sent to print. I've seen in many forums that it is stored in /var/spools/cups. What I only see here is a file name c000XXX with some information about the printing job. I'm using hold print for this printer and before printing out anything I can't find the spool. I've tried cups-pdf and it stores a pdf file in a route but this is not enough for me. I need to know where the spool data is stored in order to know from who is the job being send.

I used Ubuntu customization kit to "build" my own Ubuntu. It works as a charm. Completely recommended.
I install that custom ubuntu 10.04 on a 2gb pendrive, using usb-creator-gtk and it worked also good.
The only thing is bodering me, is when I boot that pendrive, it appear a window asking if I want to install the OS or if I want to use it live.
How can I remove that window on boot?

I recently purchased a dell inspiron N4010 with windows 7 preloaded...i want to install fedora into it and i want keep it as my primary operasting system.... but what worries me is that the windows setup files is stored in a hidden recovery partion.... So if i install fedora will i lose this ??? if no will i will be able to install windows from that partion?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have previously set up sudo via adding my name to the wheel group and then giving full privileges to the wheel group in the sudoers file. Now I choose to learn to limit that. Had noticed the most frequent use I have of sudo is to run yum update. This got me thinking, could I remove the wheel group privileges and add the following line in sudoers to limit the privilege to simply running yum, and furthermore, make it so I could run yum without a password:

rootALL=(ALL) ALL
Troy ALL= NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/yum
I think that would in fact work (if I understood one of the pages here, it will work). However, upon further thinking I realized that in such a case then anyone sitting at my computer could then use yum, without a password, to install or remove any file on my system � probably not a good idea. As a result I have to ask, can I tighten the privilege even further such that the only privilege so given was to run �yum update� and nothing else? (for example if they ran �yum install� it would fail). If you can do it, how?
Last, I was going to limit the privilege, time wise and try wise, by adding the following to the sudoers file:

Will that really work to limit the elevated privilege so I don't have elevated privileges lingering about, or is there a better way to do so?
I'm setting up my first Linux install and I was wondering if I would be able to boot Fedora from a CD while keeping every other file on my computer, or in other words if I would be able to put the /boot partition onto a cd. I've also read that Linux can be booted entirely from a logical partition. If that's true then can anyone help me in setting that up. Mostly my problem is I already have four primary partitions, one being a logical drive with plenty of free space in it, and I can't get rid of the primary partitions I already have.
