After a period of time, the gnome nautilus responds very slowly and occupy high CPU and memory resource. when I open a folder, I have to wait for several seconds to see its response But there is no such problem under KDE environment.

Just like firefox only firefox responds to my corresponding mouse buttons.
How can I get Nautilus to do that?
If I can't get Nautilus itself to do that, I thought I could bind the buttons to alt-left and alt-right in CCSM. But I don't know how to enter keystrokes as a command.
All of these freezes happen either while I'm in Nautilus or I'm opening Nautilus. The usual Ctrl+Alt+Fx (x being one to six) to get into the backstage does not work. If I have some music open then it would start looping the last couple of seconds.Now generally I would go check the logs, but I see no nautilus logs so what should I check?This is all pretty recent. I think that this started to happen when one day exim4 (and some packages all marked exim) got updated but I cannot be certain. Major playing-around after that would be some Wine issues but the system froze once before all that Wine fun.So step one, what should I check?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have Western Digital 1 TB external HDD. I had slackware 13 and it could copy data to it with speed around 30 MB/s (copy from machine to HDD) and it was cool. It's usb 2.0 as KInfoCenter says. But now in fedora 13, it's like 1 MB/s or even less (KInfoCenter still says usb 2.0). Any special mount option to set in fuseblk to speed it up? I mean something like blksize or like that?

I was transferring data from one computer to my laptop and crash error came up on my laptop...

What could be the problem? Is it serious issue? I have been having security issues with Windows and are those issues begun once again? I have been under targeted attack since 2005.
Is it me or is Fedora's Firefox slow? This is really noticable on my machine when viewing Myspace pages, especially ones with playlists. With pages like these, it scrolls really realy slowly. Also, it seems to load pages much slower than in Windows (something in Windows that is actually better than its Linux counterpart?!?!?)
Another problem that I've noticed is that when running Blender, it shows the title bar, but if I try to drop down a menu like File, or Render, It shows a white square, about the same size as the menu should be covering the GNOME panel, and it looks like the Blender panel that the File, Render, etc, menus are on covers the GNOME Panel, but if I move my cursor over icons or click on GNOME menus, it replaces that section of the Blender panel with the menu or whatever I clicked on, kind of like a hallucination, if that makes any sense.
Some days ago (Sep 2?) I did a 'yum update' on a F13 64bit computer. Since then I don't get a logon screen when booting. The computer doesn't respond to CTRL-ALT-F2 but I can login over ssh.
CAPS-LOCK and NUM-LOCK don't work on the local keyboard and moving the mouse has no effect either. When looking in dmesg I see following line:

I didn't touch xorg.conf when this happened.
I have a couple of problems the upper and lower bars will vanish. And also at times the computer does not respond this is the actions leading up to that. I will move my curor to the system button then down to to preferences and then no responce from any clicking the mouse will move but the computer will not recover from this state.??? Also some other issues: I used the yum update and had to use the yum complete-transaction-function to get it to finish seems all went well after that cant get yum list adobe* to list any thing to install?? And sometimes the computer will start up and after login will go to the nice blue desk top with no icons or bars???
I had a hard time installing this os on my computer as it did not want to use the sata on board. Got a IDE to sata adapter and things went well from there. I also tried to install it on a 4 Gb CF card that was adapted thro the IDE but that was a bust also.
I'm having trouble installing F11 x86_64, and I'm sure it is something to do with the video card.X will not even start if I have both nvidia quadro FX1700's installed. If I take one out, I can install F11, but it always 'hangs' when it starts X (which is to say, both the keyboard and mouse are locked - until I press the power button, but then it shuts down anyway).I've fiddled inittab so it starts in runlevel 3 so I can at least get in and tinker. There is no xorg.conf in /etc/X11, so I assume the system is building it's own and not quite getting it right (guess work based on other threads with similar symptoms).
I can connect to the system from another Linux machine via ssh, and I can ftp to it. I tried copying the xorg.conf from the other machine, but while it changed the screen resolution (ergo, it had some effect), it still went nuts. Starting X remotely via ssh allowed me to trap the messages, which indicate the lack of HAL has something to do with the problem.service --status-all reports hald stopped; I'm assuming this should not be the case. I've used yum to reinstall hal, but that made no difference. Nor did an update - it was already at the most recent level.F11 was installed from a DVD downloaded vai a bittorrent; the disk checked out ok.
My knowledge is limited, and I don't know what should be in xorg.conf for my machine, although I could type it in from scratch or ftp it across from here. It was 'okay' under F10, happily tolerating both video cards. But it seems to be sulking under F11. In case it matters, I'm doing everything as root; since firstboot starts X, I can't use that to create another userid.
- nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, selinux=0, remove rhgb as boot parameters - all to no avail (although these changes seem to be ignored for the most part anyway);
- start the HAL daemon manually (mine failed to start, as others have reported). It didn't like that! (the output is available, but is enormous)
- startx -configure - simply failed;
- dirconf didn't work;
- I've tried swearing at it during start-up, which turned out to be no more or less successful than anything else, but it was fun.
Intel Q6600 64 bit. Twin nvidia Quadro FX1700 cards (one removed for the time being) driving two 1920x1200 monitors each. Please let me know if there is any other relevant information I can supply.
My computer(DELL Latitude D830) halt itself on Fedora 12. When the problem comes,the LED flash and the whole machine loses respond to what I do.The only thing I can do is push down the power button.This problem mostly occure when I'm running VirtualBox or some programme that read or write disk heavily.I don't know how to debug this problem.Is there somewhere any logs which I could see what actually happened when my computer stops working ?
View 11 Replies View RelatedHave just upgraded (14-->15) using the dvd option; installed the nvidia driver (I think) and am able to startx and get to the Gnome 3 desktop (Wallpaper and top "task" bar look correct)..But, the mouse and keyboard have absolutely no affect. No matter what I click on, or what keyboard combination I use, nothing happens..(Have spent the last 3 hours researching it; and just seem to be getting nowhere.. I can do anything I need to from the CLI; but am not sure what to do..

Though, I can record and play any sound, but it is not working with sphinx project.
Is it possible to change my current nautilus window to have sudo capabilities,? e.g. to delete locked files. It may be lazy but if it takes a lot of navigation then it would be handy to somehow activate sudo from the open window without the terminal command (gksudo nautilus) which always begins at root.

Over the past week or so, when I open vim, the document opens very slowly -- on the order of 6-7 seconds... I ran 'time vim', then exited the document as quickly as I could (I figure it probably took less than a second to type ':x<enter>')How do I figure out what changed to cause this problem? It's not outside the realm of possibility that I installed something on the system that caused this, although I never noticed a correspondence between installation and the slowdown in vim. I'm not even exactly sure what I've installed over the last week.

But whatever image I try (some PNG or even SVG files) I can't get them to be displayed. It seems there is a very special format, size, type to match the Gnome/GTK+/Nautilus icon requirements...
Does anyone know how I can move the location bar in nautilus up by the toolbar, as shown by this pic:

I'd rather not have to download the source of nautilus and edit the code / compile it myself.
By the way, a guy on Ubuntu Forums thought this was a mockup. It's not. It's the regular version of Nautilus, only I removed some toolbar buttons through the /usr/share/nautilus/ui xml files.
I just want the location bar next to the toolbar to conserve screen space, and be a bit more like Finder.
Windows redraw very slowly when you move them, i.e. you move window and it redraws when you passed about half of the screen. Everything except that works fine as usual. Maybe anyone has any ideas what could happen?I have OpenSuse 11.3 with KDE 4.4.4, Radeon HD 4870 (proprietary drivers, but i've installed it long ago and it's likely not the problem).

When orientation is changing screen becomes black for a moment then it switches orientation.So how to get rid of this black screen effect ? Maybe some other options should be added to xrandr ?
In Karmic, Places has stopped working. It just thinks for a minute, then stops without opening the requested location or giving any error message. Also, Open Office Presentation, which failed during a lecture, forcing me to boot Vista and show images one by one. But my first problem was that I can't get my Airplus modem to work under Ubuntu at all. Others have had the same problem, with various awkward workarounds that I can't get to work. I wanted to remove Karmic and load Jaunty, in the hopes that I can get my Airplus to work. I am in Russia spending the summer on the dacha near St. Petersburg (no phone, so I use a cell-based service called Skylink for internet contact. I am a newbie to Ubuntu, Linux in general, am not a technical user at all, that is, do not know any programming languages.
I need Places to move data from various folders under Karmic to an external drive so I can get rid of Karmic without losing the data. Can I use commands in the terminal to move data?I really, really don't want to go back to Windows. Can anyone help me get my files off to a safe place so I can try a different version of Ubuntu?
Firefox is running really slowly for me. It seems it's accessing the hard drive constantly (as seen through System Monitor).I'm running 10.04If I start Thunderbird and Firefox invariably the disk drive light just keeps flashing for minutes and the Firefox screen gets "grayed out" and everything just slows way down. Often I just throw the power switch to shut the computer off.

Honestly speaking, booting itself is fast at least until disk access is concerned but it seems that the system faces some delays which I cannot explain.

I run hardy heron on my laptop. I wished to remove the graphical login so I removed gdm.Now I can boot without graphics, and run startx when I wish to start x. I like this behavior. However it takes a very long time, I believe longer than using graphical login, to start gnome. It takes 45 seconds between running startx and getting a fully logged-in desktop.1. how can I figure out what is taking so long and fix it2. what if I want to boot KDE instead, which I have installed but almost never use(I don't know how to make startx boot kde instead)

I did not notice this in OS11.1 on same machine.I tried disable IPv6 in boot and in firefox but it did not improve situation significantly. I still get long looking up of dns time after time.Am I "paranoid" or is there some way I can address this this slow loading issue?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a 320 g.b hard drive for a Ubuntu and a 500 g.b Windows XP. I haven't used XP in a while because well..its windows. Anyway, I wanted to go back to the windows XP side because I needed to do some editing on sony vegas. I restarted the computer and tried starting windows and everything in the system32 folder is totally gone!I don't know what to do because I don't want to have to do a fresh install and I don't have enough space to bring everything over to the ubuntu side.
I can't find 90% of my music when I search for it in the folders. (On the ubuntu linux side). When I go into rythmbox, my music is slowly being deleted (Like my Joe satriani, Crystal planet). What is funny is that rythmbox can see a lot of my music (not all) but not the folder program. Its really weird, when I take the pure locations of the music (that rythmbox can see), and copy them, then go into folders and paste them into the search at the top, they come up. But, when I click on the up button (in folders) they don't show the folder I was just in.If some one can help me with:
1. Knowing to fix windows XP without having to reinstall anything.
2. Knowing how to save my folders from being randomly deleted.
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I was messing around with some settings and all that. I went to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects. I then proceeded to enable the "Extra" option. I was prompted to restart my computer for the effects to take place. Now it is running somewhat slow, for example when I open up Firefox, or any other program, it loads very slowly. I went back to change the Visual Effects back to "None" but it was already on that option, I don't know why. I went to my Hardware Drivers and I didn't have the recommended graphics driver on, so I put the recommended on and that had no help.

I converted a DJVU file by printing it to a PS file from the Document Viewer. Then I printed again the PS to file into a PDF from that same application. The second phase took more than 24 hours and resulted in a scanned PDF of less than 500 pages with a size of 315 MB! I have many books of more pages which come down to 1 MB only. What happened in the process to make it so damn slow and so inefficient? Is there a good alternative (not ps2pdf because it provides the same result)?

I deleted the linux mint because I was only testing it, but Hardy has been my stable (trusted) distro for quite some time.I've actually booted into xp to write this because Hardy had got too slow.I've spent the day downloading Ubuntu 10.04 and Linux mint 9, but both failed to install when I tried.
