Ubuntu :: Folders Are Missing / Slowly Be Deleted
Jan 27, 2010
I have a 320 g.b hard drive for a Ubuntu and a 500 g.b Windows XP. I haven't used XP in a while because well..its windows. Anyway, I wanted to go back to the windows XP side because I needed to do some editing on sony vegas. I restarted the computer and tried starting windows and everything in the system32 folder is totally gone!I don't know what to do because I don't want to have to do a fresh install and I don't have enough space to bring everything over to the ubuntu side.
I can't find 90% of my music when I search for it in the folders. (On the ubuntu linux side). When I go into rythmbox, my music is slowly being deleted (Like my Joe satriani, Crystal planet). What is funny is that rythmbox can see a lot of my music (not all) but not the folder program. Its really weird, when I take the pure locations of the music (that rythmbox can see), and copy them, then go into folders and paste them into the search at the top, they come up. But, when I click on the up button (in folders) they don't show the folder I was just in.If some one can help me with:
1. Knowing to fix windows XP without having to reinstall anything.
2. Knowing how to save my folders from being randomly deleted.

Just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 a few days ago and am totally updated.
When in KDE, if I create a new, empty folder using Dolphin or Konsole (Or from any application within KDE) and then log out, the folder is deleted. If I create a folder and put some data in it, then it stays.
When I ctrl+alt+f1 to a console and create an empty folder, then it stays, so its just inside KDE where this happens.
Im not even sure how to troubleshoot this. I checked dmesg and some log files, but don't see anything of interest.
I installed OpenSUSE 11.4 into a Virtual machine and it did the same thing, so this doesn't appear to be an isolated issue; sounds like a pretty major bug. I wanted to get some ideas from here before I submit a bug report, however.

I need to recover some folders and some files from my CentOS 5.3 X86_64 linux machine ext3 partition after I have deteled them with rm -rf command. After I have deleted the files (*.exp extension) and folders with rm -rf command, I have written a big archive 70GB on the same partitions but in a different path. I know that in windows if I do that, there's no way I can bring back the deleted files, 'cause the OS writes the information in the same cluster and therefor I can't bring back the files. I hope you guys understand what am I saying.
what program (that knows all extensions, or dosen't read a specific extension/extensions) can I use in order to get the date back ? I have used foremost and it worked, but this programs knows only specific extensions, like exe, jpg, avi, mpeg, etc and not my *.exp extension. The foremost program worked perfectly, but it dosen't know the *.exp extension that I need, in order to get the data back that has that extension.

New Linux/Ubuntu user here. Have a slight problem:
Version: UNR/Gnome 10.0.4 LTS
I removed Evolution and replaced it with Thunderbird. I no longer have the option within the white envelope in the panel for compose mail, etc. I really liked this function but it appears to me to have been an Evolution specific function. How to make this work for Thunderbird?

I'm using UBUNTU 11.04. Sometimes when I open a folder or resizing it, the top part of the folder(which contains minimize, maximize buttons) is missing. That time can't move the folder also. Why is that and how to fix it?

This evening I went through the upgrade process to 10.04. The entire process went well until reboot time. At that point fsck was run and stopped after checking the first physical hard drive. After some time I skipped (s). When I tried to log in, warning messages informed me that Nautilus could not access it's folders in our home folder. ls /home/ brings up nothing, nada zilch. Some poking around confirms that the drive is there but Ubuntu seems unaware of it.
The configuration:
Physical hd #1 is: sda a 40Gb hard drive with windows and Ubuntu / and swap.
Physical hd #2 is: sdb a 120Gb hard drive with our /home partitions.
Seems Ubuntu is simply not detecting the drive?

Once I setup KDE on Testing and opened Dolphin I reallzed there were no default folders (Documents, Desktop, Music...) and was wondering if this is normal. Other distros like Kubuntu and PCLinuxOS (what a name) have these and I was wondering if they added them or they are part of KDE. Gnome has them on debian but not KDE.
If they are part of KDE and I'm missing them and shouldn't, would manually adding them as I did require mentioning them elsewhere on the system or do applications and such assume they are there?

I'm using fedora 15 64-bit. Today i was prompted to install some updates, most of them are related to mesa driver updates. Once installed those, I rebooted the system. After login again, i couldn't find any of my files or folders. The hidden files & folders are remain there but rest all were gone. Now my account looks like newly created one. All of my important documents are missing.

I am new to Fedora and Linux. I have installed Fedora 12 on virtual box and installed Guest Additions. Later I did upgrade Fedora updates and noticed that my Guest Additions features were missing like Seamless mode, shared folders etc. Hence I had install Guest Additions again. So every time when I do Fedora updations, do I need to re-install Guest Additions or am I missing something very obvious?

I cut and paste files today and they seemed to have gone missing or got deleted in the process. How do I recover them?
As a first guess I would think they are sitting on a clip board somewhere, but I can't find any information anywhere about fedora14 and the default clipboard that ships with it.

I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem. It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.

In Karmic, Places has stopped working. It just thinks for a minute, then stops without opening the requested location or giving any error message. Also, Open Office Presentation, which failed during a lecture, forcing me to boot Vista and show images one by one. But my first problem was that I can't get my Airplus modem to work under Ubuntu at all. Others have had the same problem, with various awkward workarounds that I can't get to work. I wanted to remove Karmic and load Jaunty, in the hopes that I can get my Airplus to work. I am in Russia spending the summer on the dacha near St. Petersburg (no phone, so I use a cell-based service called Skylink for internet contact. I am a newbie to Ubuntu, Linux in general, am not a technical user at all, that is, do not know any programming languages.
I need Places to move data from various folders under Karmic to an external drive so I can get rid of Karmic without losing the data. Can I use commands in the terminal to move data?I really, really don't want to go back to Windows. Can anyone help me get my files off to a safe place so I can try a different version of Ubuntu?

Firefox is running really slowly for me. It seems it's accessing the hard drive constantly (as seen through System Monitor).I'm running 10.04If I start Thunderbird and Firefox invariably the disk drive light just keeps flashing for minutes and the Firefox screen gets "grayed out" and everything just slows way down. Often I just throw the power switch to shut the computer off.

I just installed a OCZ Vertex2 and was a bit disappointed by the boot time (Kubuntu 10.10 64bit).
Honestly speaking, booting itself is fast at least until disk access is concerned but it seems that the system faces some delays which I cannot explain.
Here is a excerpt from my dmesg:
Code:
[ 2.903360] md: raid6 personality registered for level 6
[ 2.903362] md: raid5 personality registered for level 5
[ 2.903364] md: raid4 personality registered for level 4
[Code]....

I run hardy heron on my laptop. I wished to remove the graphical login so I removed gdm.Now I can boot without graphics, and run startx when I wish to start x. I like this behavior. However it takes a very long time, I believe longer than using graphical login, to start gnome. It takes 45 seconds between running startx and getting a fully logged-in desktop.1. how can I figure out what is taking so long and fix it2. what if I want to boot KDE instead, which I have installed but almost never use(I don't know how to make startx boot kde instead)

I am setting up a lubuntu nas with all of my music, movies, etc on it. I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it

The Problem was I wanted to open my /home/Pictures folder and have it display the contents of the My Pictures folder in my windows partition. This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies. This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I was messing around with some settings and all that. I went to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects. I then proceeded to enable the "Extra" option. I was prompted to restart my computer for the effects to take place. Now it is running somewhat slow, for example when I open up Firefox, or any other program, it loads very slowly. I went back to change the Visual Effects back to "None" but it was already on that option, I don't know why. I went to my Hardware Drivers and I didn't have the recommended graphics driver on, so I put the recommended on and that had no help.

There are quite a few threads in this forum on how to convert a DJVU file into a PDF (among which this thread the instruction of which I followed.) I converted a DJVU file by printing it to a PS file from the Document Viewer. Then I printed again the PS to file into a PDF from that same application. The second phase took more than 24 hours and resulted in a scanned PDF of less than 500 pages with a size of 315 MB! I have many books of more pages which come down to 1 MB only. What happened in the process to make it so damn slow and so inefficient? Is there a good alternative (not ps2pdf because it provides the same result)?

I've been using Hardy Heron and linux mint 7 for quite a while now and was very happy with both until the last month or so.For some reason the computer seems to run much more slowly than it did. I deleted the linux mint because I was only testing it, but Hardy has been my stable (trusted) distro for quite some time.I've actually booted into xp to write this because Hardy had got too slow.I've spent the day downloading Ubuntu 10.04 and Linux mint 9, but both failed to install when I tried.

I hope this is the right forum for this.
I downloaded Blender today to try my hand at making some 3D graphics. I have used it in the past on a windows machine and it ran smoothly. This time I have downloaded it onto a computer with similar specs but it runs very slowly. The program is laggy and slow to respond to both keyboard and mouse input. When I checked the system monitor it said that I am using 50% of my cpu and 1/6th of my memory running both Blender and Firefox(to write this post). The machine is running no hotter than usual and the fans do not seem to be being stressed at all.
Does anyone know what could be causing the program to run so slowly?

I'm running a Minecraft server off of a dell T110 with Ubuntu 10.1 installed, as I haven't had a chance to install Natty yet. The problem is, it's running very very slowly, past the point where I could say it's the hardware's issue.
I have an intel xeon (2.4ghz quad core) in there, with 2gb of RAM. 2gb isn't much, but the computer runs slowly even when the MC server itself is off.
I'm talking super super slow, like, the cursor doesn't even show up all the time. It disappears frequently and things take a while to render/open, a site like facebook takes about 20 seconds to completely load.
This is my first ubuntu install, so I'm kind of new to it. The only problem/solution I could think is that I may have installed the 32bit version on a 64bit processor. I don't think I did, butttt that's the only thing that occurs to me
