Fedora :: Plymouth Graphical Boot Disappeared After Loading Nvidia Driver?
Sep 23, 2010
I have successfully installed the Nvidia driver on my FC13 system that is using an Nvidia NV44 (Ge 6200) card. It seems to be working as I see the nvidia driver when I do a lsmod | grep nvidia and the glxgears program works as well as the nvidia-settings program.Basically, I did the following:
Since I've been using the nvidia drivers (from rpmfusion) and followed Leigh123's nvidia guide, I don't have a Plymouth graphical boot anymore. Instead I get the black screen and the blue/white bar at the bottom. I installed the plymouth-theme-solar (or whatever) and switched to that, updated initrd too, but no difference - same thing happened. This is an AMD64 system, latest kernel, latest nvidia drivers. Snippet of grub.conf:-
Upgraded to 10.04 with proprietary Nvidia driver. No plymouth at boot, but dmesg gives error below. On shutdown get large plymouth display. Tried several hints but none work.
I used leighs post to install the nvidia driver for Fedora 12 and now plymouth does not work it uses the text theme. Right before it goes into the text theme I get this message:
I installed the nvidia driver from the official repository for openSUSE 11.3 and now everything works perfectly, except i get a verbose splash screen after the grub menu.It has worked after i upgraded from 11.2. In my menu.lst it already says splash=silent. If you want more information, please ask, because i don't know where to look or what to show you (i'm fairly new to linux in general).
I bought a new NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT video card for this PC recently and now whenever I boot Ubuntu 9.10 Live I can't change the screen resolution from 640 X 480. I get this message to the effect that the driver is restricted and not free software. When I try to download it and use it it says I can only activate it after a reboot, but I guess it means after rebooting an installation of Ubuntu, not the live cd since it never takes.
Ubuntu recommends NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver 185, so I went to NVIDIA's web site and downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1.run (and NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run since I think it's the newest, at least when I enter GeForce 6 Series and Linux 32-bit in the driver download search it's what comes up). I noticed that at the beginning menu of the Ubuntu 9.10 Live cd, when you press F4, the option to load from a driver disk is there. I was hoping this means I could just put one or both of the above files on a cd, insert it into the other disk drive and select that option.
After messing up with gnome3-branding(gfxboot),I removed itow grub is back to minimal. There is no graphical bootloader anymore.I tried reinstalling opensuse-brandingt it says "message not found"
I have set this up before (ie installed the drivers and had them working perfectly) but had to do a system wide re-install of fedora. Since this clean install, I've had non-stop grief with nVidia drivers. They have been downloaded and installed via yum, and on start-up nvidia.ko loads. But from with gnome I cant gain access to any 'special effects' (ie desktop effects wont enable).
It is important to mention that initially Fedora did see the cards and I was able to set up a dual monitor system. It right was after I enable SLI and PhysX and re-booting into Linux that the problem showed up.
I have seen this issue before in another machine with an ASUS board, but not until today I associated with the SLI setup. My guess is that there has to be something that the driver is enabling in the cards that messes up the interface between the nvidia.ko module and the kernel, but I don't know what may fix it. I need this system for some numerical calculations.
I have my first problem with drivers in Linux! I installed openSuSE 11.4 x86 on my computer (Intel Dual-Core 2,5 Ghz; Nvidia 7300 GS) and after installing graphical drivers (proprietary) I can't load the system. All I have is a progress bar of user's profile loading and playing the startup sound. I already installed openSUSE 11.4 x86_64 version on this computer and there was no problem with drivers.
really wish to customize my GDM for ubuntu 11.4 but failed to do so.....therefore i decided to use alt. such as SLiM.....I could install it properly in virtualbox but when i went to do it on my real ubuntu 11.4 ......the screen stops at plymouth theme or goes blank after loading plymouth theme......then i read further more blogs and made changes and now even if i configure SLim the GDM starts no matter what i do .........
PS : I am new to ubuntu and dont have any knowledge about scripting programming and stuff....
I've just done an update and installed my nvidia drivers when I noticed my plymouth has stopped working (I think) I only get a really boring boot and I don't really know how to fix this. I've googled around for some tutorials but they did not work.
Fedora 13-64. While booting the nvidia driver has a segmentation fault:
Code: Enabling the nvidia driver: /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions: line 530: 1406 Segmentation fault "$@"[FAILED] It is not a problem when using the notebook's led/mouse/keyboard. The problem is when I'm using an external monitor/mouse/keyboard. In this case I must first boot using the notebook until it gets to the login screen when I can start using the external configuration. That is annoying because the notebook seats under the table and must be put over the table to boot. The notebook model is HP DV6 2173 CL with a discrete GeForce G105M
My other notebook running Ubuntu works exactly as needed. The whole boot process is shown and controlled by the external monitor/mouse/keyboard.
I have installed F13 and after reading some Nvidia Driver installation guides I managed to blacklist nouveu driver. I run the 'init 3' command and it gave me an error something like 'nouveu driver still in use' then I reboot the system and the fonts were bigger than I run init 3 command again and this time installation was completed then I went back with init 5 command. I opened nvidia x server settings I have cloned the monitors and I installed the flash player, totem vs. Than F13 gave me the notification about updates and with yum update command It has downloaded and installed those updates. Then I shut the system off. When I restarted system it does not boot up. I see the loading bar and It hangs on at the end like forever. I have installed fedora again and the process I have done was same so the result.
Is it possible for plymouth to work with the ATI Catalyst driver installed in Fedora 15 x86_64?
Is it that plymouth requires KMS and Catalyst doesn't provide it? With the nvidia driver, I could put a vga= line in grub and plymouth would run. Is there something similar for catalyst?
I installed (debian-jessie-DI-rc3-amd64-DVD [testing]) on both my laptop and desktop. After I installed plymouth and some themes, on the laptop I entered into the terminal to steup and activate the theme like so:
It wouldn't load the plymouth theme. Now I installed (debian-jessie-8.0.0-amd64-DVD [stable]) only on the laptop so far, and used the same process as with (debian-jessie-DI-rc3-amd64-DVD [testing]) for installing plymouth and when it got to where it said it was missing firmware I fallowed the:
...and then rebooted the system, the plymouth theme didn't load just like the desktop when I installed (debian-jessie-DI-rc3-amd64-DVD [testing]) on it. I looked at the /etc/plymouth/plymouthd.conf and it reads:
Code: Select all# Administrator customizations go in this file #[Daemon] #Theme=text #ShowDelay=0 [Daemon] Theme=debian-sunrise-blue
now, I want to add my new Fedora system entry to my "central" lilo.conf, resident on another linux distribution. So, i've done
[Code]...
my lilo fedora entry boots fine but... at the middle of "after boot" loading the system hangs and stops the usual driver detection, etc (normally, it hangs on the CDROM detection or USB 2.0 camera detection).
I used KDE3 with 11.0 with some KDE4 apps till I needed some applications from the KDE4 factory tree and mistakenly left the repository active. Next time the online update also updated most of the applications I would rather keep, and as a result the KDE3 disappeared from the KDM login choices. So I have two questions:1. how to enable users to select KDE3 at login (currently I have to select failsafe mode and run startkde manually)2. how to replay back an update I didn't want to have?
Perhaps a combination of the above: can I upgrade to OS11.2 and keep KDE3? (please don't tell me to switch to KDE4, I acknowledge and appreciate the effort and the improvements that KDE4 got, but it's still not a replacement for KDE3 - there are so many simple things which are impossible in the new version)
Whenever I boot fedora core 13 it starts Plymouth and a txt progress bar starts at the bottom. Whenever it gets to 100% it flickers a little bit then does nothing. The system doesn't hang I can still crrl-alt-delete and it shows the processes stopping. When it displays the programs starting it gets to jexec and nothing happens.
I have just installed the F13 XFCE spin on my netbook (Asus Eee 1000ha), and can't boot past where Plymouth is supposed to start. The message I get is below.
In programming sense what is Desktop ?I can run any gnome apps using terminal or "Run Application" ?Such as , to open terminal i can type gnome-terminal and it invokes. What is Xwindow , xserver and Why do we need Gnome , KDE etc ?Why i cannot launch any graphical application [ firefox as example ] without loading xserver ?? I donot need wallpaper , start menu bla bla .. I only want to run any graphical applictaion using default black terminal.
I just installed the Catalyst drivers under FC13 (package xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-10.9-1.fc13.i686 ) and I am superhappy, as it worked straight out of the box.
The only little annoying thing is that I lost the Plymouth graphical boot, which is now substituted with the text scrollbar...
I edited grub.conf and added
Code:
Somewhere I read that that attribute is now obsolete and has to be changed to
I'm in the live CD right now trying to figure out what to do. When I first got into Ubuntu, it asked me to install nVidia drivers, so I did. Afterwards, it said I needed to restart my computer to finish installation, but when upon getting past the bootloader, my screen hangs on "Assuming drive cache: write through". I found this post: [URL] but the terminal commands didn't help and I can't find /etc/xorg.cfg even if I show hidden files. I've added a picture of the screen I get when I try to boot up, so maybe someone can tell me what to do to get back into Ubuntu. I would like to be able to get back without having to reinstall, if possible.
I have recently installed ubuntu desktop i386 10.10 on my laptop (Saony vaio VPCF137HG) as a dual boot. When it first started it worked perfectly, but when I installed the nvidia driver (For a nvidia Geforce 425M GPU) it came to the purple screen (Pic of screen) and no further. It doesn't respond to any commands and would not go any further, even after 40 mins!
I am having difficulty loading fedora 14 with nvidia 7300gt. I have lots of text on the screen but I cannot enter anything then system hangs there only. The same system runs fine with windows XP The same system runs fine when I use onboard graphic card and disable nvidia. I installed the fedora 14 by disabling nvidia graphic card and used onboard grphic card. I had exactly the same problem with ubuntu, I was not even able to boot from live cd with nvidia. Now I want to use my nvidia graphic card for fedora.
I am running Debian Testing and can't get Plymouth Splash to work on my system. When splash is put in the grub line it locks up on boot up.Here are my system specs:
This is my first day with Umbuntu and my first post here at the forums. I bought a Dell Pentium 4 with a fresh install of Umbuntu 9.10 on it. Worked well until I decided to do something a newbie shouldn't do and install a graphics card and drivers. The graphics card worked just fine until the drivers were installed and I tried to reboot the system. Now it no longer boots. Some specifics for you.
Since my time with Ubuntu is limited to hours, the nomenclature will probably be wrong. But I will try to get the point across. The card is a EVGA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. On first start up with this card the computer functioned fine. I went to a place where you could change the screen options. There were three selections and I don't remember the names (idiot that I am). I selected the middle one. The OS stated that in order to utilize all the capabilities of nvidia graphics cards blah, blah, blah, a driver would need to be downloaded and activated. No name, just a driver. OK, do it (sounds kinda windows like). The download seemed to go OK, but now I needed to reboot to activate the driver.
Now: Ubuntu logo comes up. Screen goes to a text screen that says:
Ubuntu 9.10 dave-ubuntu tty1 dave-ubuntu login:
This screen flashes and does not take input from the keyboard or mouse. Next, I removed the graphics card and used the on-board graphics. Same result with faster flashing. What have I done? Apparently Ubuntu and Linux in general don't have a system recovery option? I read something about the GRUB menu, but the system flasher GRUB loading for half a second and then is on to locking up. I can't seem to get to a GRUB menu. What a way to finish the day.
