OpenSUSE Install :: KDE And LXDE Won't Start ; Xterm Okay

Aug 4, 2011

Since this morning, I'm having a problem which symptoms are similar to this one : Cannot Login, KDE won't start - OpenSUSE 11.3, but it affects only one user.Everything was fine yesterday, but now, everytime this one user tries to start his KDE session, the screen goes black for a few seconds before coming back to the login screen.

I tried the following :

- I installed LXDE and tried to log in : same problem

- I tried to log in Xterm : no problem

- I created a new user and tried to log in : no problem, be it KDE or LXDE

- I cleared /tmp : same problem. My /home partition is 98% full but still has 2-3GB available. The / partition is 45% full with 28GB left.

[code]....

From what I've gathered so far, it seems the problem is user-specific, graphical session-sepcific, but not desktop-specific (since both KDE and freshly installed LXDE fail in the same way)... and now I don't know what else to try.

My setup :

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
Linux 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-07-21 02:17:24 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Slackware :: Intel Graphics / Vertical Lines From Xpdf/gv Under Xterm Stick To Xterm Window Making It Unreadable?

Jun 13, 2011

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.

The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.

On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

CentOS 5 :: Cannot Find "xterm" To Start A Failsafe Session?

Feb 22, 2010

I just performed a clean install of CentOS 5.4 on a Dell PowerEdge 1950III server. When I booted up for the first time, I begin seeing problems with the following error:There was an error loading the theme TreeFlowerFailed to open file'/usr/share/gdm/themes/TreeFlower/background.png': No such file or directoryOnce I hit OK there I get this:There was an error loading the theme, and the default theme could not be loaded. Attempting to start the standard greeterI then get the standard greeter, and I am able to log in as root. However, once logged in I can open neither Firefox nor a terminal. I can use some programs such as OpenOffice.org, but I cannot use a terminal or a web browser. The next thing I try is to log in to a failsafe terminal session. When I try this I get perhaps the most worrisome error so far:Cannot find "xterm" to start a failsafe session.

OpenSUSE :: Some Keys No Longer Working In Xterm Or Konsole

Aug 8, 2011

Just had a weird problem in konsole at the command line. Some of my keys are not recognized as if they are not being pushed. They work fine in other applications and work fine if I push the Shift key with it and capitalize the letter. Some of the keys are the c, g, r, w, 3, 8,and 9. C, G, R, W, #, *, and ( all work so I do not believe it is hardware as I am using this computer to type this message. It is just at the command line. I don't know what I did to make this happen or how to fix it. I am using openSUSE 11.3 with the KDE 4.4.4 release 3. I tried reinstalling xterm and konsole from yast but it did not fix it.

Ubuntu Servers :: After Using Crontab With /etc/crontab / Giving Error "can't Find Command Root"?

Aug 26, 2010

I have a question about using crontab with /etc/crontab...

I had a cron job that I needed to run as root. At the time I thought that sticking it in /etc/crontab would be a good idea. However, I used the crontab command to edit /etc/crontab, which I guess is not standard procedure? Specifically, I configured /etc/crontab as my local user's crontab (i.e. sudo crontab /etc/crontab) then added my cron job as I would a local user crontab (i.e. sudo crontab -e).

Originally, my cron job looked like this:

30 * * * * root /my/batch/script &> /dev/null

After adding the new cron job I started seeing errors. Something to the effect of "can't find command root" or something similar. So I removed the 'root' user definition from the cron job and the job started running fine. However, because this is /etc/crontab, there are other system related cron jobs that have been defined to run under the root account (e.g. "17 * * * * root cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly" runs as root, etc.). So these pre-existing system cron jobs, which up until now have been running smoothly, are now generating "can't find command root" errors. But I think that the system cron jobs _are_ successfully being run someplace because logrotate seems to be working.

So what I _think_ is happening is that /etc/crontab is being run twice: once as the system crontab, and once as my sudoed local user's crontab. When I run crontab -l I see nothing, but when I run sudo crontab -l I can see the contents of /etc/crontab. I am reluctant to delete my sudoed local user's crontab, because then in the process I would be deleting the system crontab, and I do not know how I should restore the system crontab's contents. (I am still not sure as to the most appropriate way to edit the system crontab).

How can I get out of this mess? I want /etc/crontab to go back to the way it was before--running _once_ as the system crontab. As for my new cron job, I'm willing to reconfigure it anywhere so long as I am still able to run it as root. Any ideas? (I am using Ubuntu 8.04 Server LTE)

OpenSUSE :: Crontab For Amanda Enterprise Gets - Permission Denied ?

Sep 3, 2010

I'm configuring Amanda Enterprise on an OpenSuSE 11.3 system, and everything but the scheduled backups are running. I decided to try and fix it tonight, but I'm pretty fed up by now.

So here's the background:

The application creates an account on the box named "amandabackup" and adds it to the 'video' and 'disk' groups.

It generates cron jobs in /etc/zmanda/zmc_aee/crontab, which is configured as the location of the crontab file for the amandabackup user.

The crontab is owned by amandabackup:disk with a mask of 644.

So I played around with it a little bit; I ran the backup task manually as amandabackup, which worked fine.

I then tried adding the following to the crontab:

And touched amandacron.log, then made sure it was owned by amandabackup with a mask of 644 (i also tried /etc/amanda/amandacron.log, which is a directory the account stores backup session configs in, so I know it can write to it properly). The file is never updated. I tried adding amandabackup to different groups (it's currently been added to the "Users" group), with no success. I tried a symlink to the crontab file in /etc/cron.d to see if that would make a difference, but it didn't.

At this point, I went online and tried some more stuff I found:

I checked /var/log/mail/amandabackup - everything *but* cron jobs were reporting to it.

I verified cron was running with both "ps -ef | grep cron" and "rccron status"

I ensured /var/spool/cron/tabs/amandabackup existed, showed the proper entries, and was set to 644. (this one's the important bit)I checked /var/log/messages, and every minute on the dot I see: <timestamp> /usr/sbin/cron[PID]: Permission Denied

I ensured there was no /etc/cron.allow, and that /etc/cron.deny did not contain amandabackup.

I tried making an /etc/cron.allow, adding amandabackup, and restarting the cron daemon, but this did nothing.

I don't think I've forgotten anything, but my attempts have been getting progressively more feverish, so I'm not positive. Is there some annoying YAST cron panel I'm not seeing? Is there some way of getting more verbose logging out of the cron daemon than just "permission denied"? Is there some draconian rule about crontabs only working based on some otherwise-arbitrary account setting?
