Security :: Root's .bash_history Has Been Truncated To 0

Feb 9, 2010

I have a recently installed Ubuntu Karmic with standard packages. I enabled automatic security updates and manually updated every package once. I have the root account enabled. At ~1am GMT my .bash_history file for the root account has been truncated to zero. I think the PC may have crashed (no keyboard, mouse, etc, but still some HD activity) at around this time. The disk isn't full, but this is a fresh install, I do not have direct net access (NAT) and I have only visited a limited number of web sites.

General :: Bash_history File And Running Bash On Multiple Windows?

May 5, 2011

Despite the history file is unique (~/.bash_history) I see that the multiple bash processes run on different windows are not all updating that file. I presume that the bash is not taking into account this possibility (multiple bashes on multiple windows) and writes thus the history file in a simple straightforward way. This would mean that a number of history entries are lost. I've tried to find information but had no luck so far.

Fedora :: Xsane Page Size Setting - Cannot Find A Page Size Anywhere In Any Of The Buttons

Jun 5, 2010

I have a Canoscan LiDE 30 scanner which works fine in Linux. I haven't used it in months, and never since moving from Jaunty x86_64 to Fedora 11 x86_64. This evening I suddenly need to scan two pages to send to someone via e-mail, and the recipient is desperate to receive them. Naturally, Xsane has decided this is the moment to screw me.

The problem: I cannot figure out how to tell Xsane that the page size is 8.5 11. It insists on scanning only the left side, 3.99 x 11. I cannot find a page size anywhere in any of the buttons.

In Preview I once got it to scan the entire page, but could not figure out how to save the image to file. Subsequently I have not been able to figure out how I did it. In any event, scanning from the small main window always scans 3.99 x 11. Adjusting the scan area manually in the Preview window allows me to change the size area in the small main window to 8.5 x 11, but when I then scan from the small main window it reverts to 3.99 x 11.

I have scanned the document a hundred times at least, each time trying different buttons, but nothing has succeeded in getting the full page.

Hardware :: Partition Size Detected By Testdisk Bigger Than Disk Size

Mar 17, 2011

a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.

I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?

Software :: Xsane Reduces Size Of Image Of Scanned Page - How To Get Back To Full Size?

Nov 12, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04, xsane 0.996, Brother MFC 240c scanner.I just finished writing a long dissertation on my problem with this scanning environment (which I will spare you). In a nutshell the resulting image, when printed, is smaller than the original document. In writing my dissertation for this post I determined that the cause of the issue is that xsane believes I am scanning an 8.5 x 14 inch document when I am in fact scanning an 8.5 x 11 letter. So the question is... can I change the size to 8.5 x 11? and if so, how? I have not found anything in the xsane Preferences.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Change Icons Size And Gaps Size

Oct 22, 2015

today I upgraded via official testing repository Gnome to version 3.18. After this, icons on desktop and nautilus are bigger, than before. Next thing, gaps between icons are smaller than before. I tried change theme to default (Adwaita), then run gtk-update-icon-cache, but without result.

Normal view - icons are big for this view. URL....

Small view - icons are still big for this view. URL...

How can I change icons size and gaps size? Or is it bug for this version?

Which seemed to work, but then the system hung when I tried to use the extra space and I had to reboot. What's the correct way to increase the size of the /dev/shm partition?

Fedora :: How To Change The Font Size

I've been squinting at the screen for a little while now but it's just proving to give me more of a headache and hurt my eyes than anything. Anyone know how to change the font size so that I can actually see the work I'm doing?

Fedora :: Wine - Yum Says 27k File Size?

Mar 15, 2010

At some point my wine install died. I haven't used it a lot and I update my Fedora 11 regularly so I'm not sure what made it break. I thought "ok, just see if there's an updated version". 'yum info wine' says there is an update version and the file is 27k in size. Tried installing and no joy. Tried erasing wine and then installing; no joy. Yum says that the X86-64 and the i686 version are both 27k in size. I know for sure that is wrong. On a semi-nonFedora note, I tried compiling my own version of wine. It compiled fine after installing some dependencies and '-devel' files, but it gets the same crash as the Fedora version was getting.

Fedora :: Set The Virtual Desktop Size In F14?

Feb 17, 2011

I'm using F14 on a netbook with a pathetically small screen, 1024x600. The resolution is so low that important dialogs, the print dialog for example, can't be displayed in their entirety. It's also not possible to drag a dialog up so that you see the bottom of the dialog.

Using a virtual desktop that's larger than the physical desktop would provide a workaround. ais there a way to set desktop size to be larger than the screen size?
