View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a recently installed Ubuntu Karmic with standard packages. I enabled automatic security updates and manually updated every package once. I have the root account enabled. At ~1am GMT my .bash_history file for the root account has been truncated to zero. I think the PC may have crashed (no keyboard, mouse, etc, but still some HD activity) at around this time. The disk isn't full, but this is a fresh install, I do not have direct net access (NAT) and I have only visited a limited number of web sites.
View 5 Replies View RelatedDespite the history file is unique (~/.bash_history) I see that the multiple bash processes run on different windows are not all updating that file. I presume that the bash is not taking into account this possibility (multiple bashes on multiple windows) and writes thus the history file in a simple straightforward way. This would mean that a number of history entries are lost. I've tried to find information but had no luck so far.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Canoscan LiDE 30 scanner which works fine in Linux. I haven't used it in months, and never since moving from Jaunty x86_64 to Fedora 11 x86_64. This evening I suddenly need to scan two pages to send to someone via e-mail, and the recipient is desperate to receive them. Naturally, Xsane has decided this is the moment to screw me.
The problem: I cannot figure out how to tell Xsane that the page size is 8.5 11. It insists on scanning only the left side, 3.99 x 11. I cannot find a page size anywhere in any of the buttons.
In Preview I once got it to scan the entire page, but could not figure out how to save the image to file. Subsequently I have not been able to figure out how I did it. In any event, scanning from the small main window always scans 3.99 x 11. Adjusting the scan area manually in the Preview window allows me to change the size area in the small main window to 8.5 x 11, but when I then scan from the small main window it reverts to 3.99 x 11.
I have scanned the document a hundred times at least, each time trying different buttons, but nothing has succeeded in getting the full page.
a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?
Ubuntu 10.04, xsane 0.996, Brother MFC 240c scanner.I just finished writing a long dissertation on my problem with this scanning environment (which I will spare you). In a nutshell the resulting image, when printed, is smaller than the original document. In writing my dissertation for this post I determined that the cause of the issue is that xsane believes I am scanning an 8.5 x 14 inch document when I am in fact scanning an 8.5 x 11 letter. So the question is... can I change the size to 8.5 x 11? and if so, how? I have not found anything in the xsane Preferences.
View 7 Replies View Relatedtoday I upgraded via official testing repository Gnome to version 3.18. After this, icons on desktop and nautilus are bigger, than before. Next thing, gaps between icons are smaller than before. I tried change theme to default (Adwaita), then run gtk-update-icon-cache, but without result.
Normal view - icons are big for this view. URL....
Small view - icons are still big for this view. URL...
How can I change icons size and gaps size? Or is it bug for this version?
Have just installed Lexmark s605 printer on wireless network, printer works ok but when i print a document even though it is showing the correct size on 'print preview', the printed output is on the page is tiny and and 90deg rotated, I've tried various drivers from the Lexmark website, and also messing about in printer settings but nothing seems to make any difference.

I'm running FC 14 and the /dev/shm is no longer as big as it used to be (under an older FC). How can I increase the size of the /dev/shm? I tried the following
Code:

Which seemed to work, but then the system hung when I tried to use the extra space and I had to reboot. What's the correct way to increase the size of the /dev/shm partition?
I'm a student in a linux class and we just installed fedora. so far it's nice except that the work we do is in the CLI which I can barely see because it's so small on the screen! I've been squinting at the screen for a little while now but it's just proving to give me more of a headache and hurt my eyes than anything. Anyone know how to change the font size so that I can actually see the work I'm doing?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAt some point my wine install died. I haven't used it a lot and I update my Fedora 11 regularly so I'm not sure what made it break. I thought "ok, just see if there's an updated version". 'yum info wine' says there is an update version and the file is 27k in size. Tried installing and no joy. Tried erasing wine and then installing; no joy. Yum says that the X86-64 and the i686 version are both 27k in size. I know for sure that is wrong. On a semi-nonFedora note, I tried compiling my own version of wine. It compiled fine after installing some dependencies and '-devel' files, but it gets the same crash as the Fedora version was getting.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using F14 on a netbook with a pathetically small screen, 1024x600. The resolution is so low that important dialogs, the print dialog for example, can't be displayed in their entirety. It's also not possible to drag a dialog up so that you see the bottom of the dialog.
Using a virtual desktop that's larger than the physical desktop would provide a workaround. ais there a way to set desktop size to be larger than the screen size?
