CentOS 5 :: What Size LVM Volume To Hold A 32GB File

Apr 7, 2011

How big should an LVM volume be to hold a single 32GB file? I thought 33GB would be enough, but apparently not. A volume has run out of space. There are 2 identical volumes holding identical sized files (kvm virtual hard drives in raw format). One (ic030) is showing zero free space and one is showing 97% full. I guess the discrepancy is caused by journalling, directory structure information etc. Possibly also sparseness. How do I calculate the worst-case maximum required LVM volume size? i.e. assuming no sprseness and maximum journal size etc. Here's some info from the file system. (I have removed other volumes form the listings.) The volumes are formatted with ext3.

So when i install ubuntu it gets to 47% and than i get this error message. After that the install doesn't really seem to do much.Code:Device /dev/sbd has a logical sector size of 4096. Not all parts of GNU Parted Support this at the moment, and the working code is HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL.Now i did search and i found another topic where someone had the same problem. His solution was to reburn the CD and try again. I did that and it still got me the same messageP.S. I do have two boot options now however. One for ubuntu and one for windows though i already ran the uninstall.

Fedora :: Xsane Page Size Setting - Cannot Find A Page Size Anywhere In Any Of The Buttons

Jun 5, 2010

I have a Canoscan LiDE 30 scanner which works fine in Linux. I haven't used it in months, and never since moving from Jaunty x86_64 to Fedora 11 x86_64. This evening I suddenly need to scan two pages to send to someone via e-mail, and the recipient is desperate to receive them. Naturally, Xsane has decided this is the moment to screw me.

The problem: I cannot figure out how to tell Xsane that the page size is 8.5 11. It insists on scanning only the left side, 3.99 x 11. I cannot find a page size anywhere in any of the buttons.

In Preview I once got it to scan the entire page, but could not figure out how to save the image to file. Subsequently I have not been able to figure out how I did it. In any event, scanning from the small main window always scans 3.99 x 11. Adjusting the scan area manually in the Preview window allows me to change the size area in the small main window to 8.5 x 11, but when I then scan from the small main window it reverts to 3.99 x 11.

I have scanned the document a hundred times at least, each time trying different buttons, but nothing has succeeded in getting the full page.

General :: Setting Size Of LVM Volume?

Mar 7, 2011

I am installing Ubuntu server 10.10 onto a machine with a 1 tb Hard drive. I have had a host of other problems installing but that is for another thread. My question here is that it takes so long to format such a big drive, and I have heard and read that LVM starts with a small partition and expands it as more room is needed. So the installer crashed and started over so this time I decided to choose 'Guided - Use entire disk and set up LVM' instead of just 'Guided - Use Entire Disk'. So it is asking me to set the size of the LVM Volume. Am I setting the size of the initial volume? or am I setting the max size the volume can expand to?

Fedora :: Increasing Size Of System Partition?

Jul 29, 2011

I am running Fedora 15 along with Windows 7 on my Dell laptop. Yesterday, when I was trying to install TeX Live, it stopped in between saying that there is no space left in File System. Even though I have space in my hard drive volumes, space seems to be running out of my system partition which is only 9GB in size (I guess!).I am posting a few results that might help you guys. I have an unformatted 15GB partition. How can I add it to my system partition? And is my var folder too big (1.5GB)? If yes, how do I backup its contents and then delete them? Additionally, the File System shows a folder 'media' (89GB) which links the C: drive that contains Windows 7 and my personal files. Should it remain that way or should I separate it? If the latter, how? I just couldn't find any.

Code:
#df -h

Ubuntu :: Incorrect Volume Size Reported?

Apr 7, 2011

My MP3 Player (Zen:Vision:M) has roughly 60 GB of space and yet Ubuntu insists only 3.6 GB is available. I know this is not true because in Windows the correct amount of room is displayed and can be filled up. Because my music collection is stored in my Linux partition I need to solve this issue if I'm going to actually use my MP3 Player. What is also interesting is the fact that the device doesn't show up in Gparted, System Monitor or fdisk.

When I attempt to look at the Zen's contents through Nautilus I get this message:

Error initializing camera: -1: Unspecified error

And when I update through Banshee every song gives an error of:

Hardware :: Partition Size Detected By Testdisk Bigger Than Disk Size

I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?

Software :: Xsane Reduces Size Of Image Of Scanned Page - How To Get Back To Full Size?

Nov 12, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04, xsane 0.996, Brother MFC 240c scanner.I just finished writing a long dissertation on my problem with this scanning environment (which I will spare you). In a nutshell the resulting image, when printed, is smaller than the original document. In writing my dissertation for this post I determined that the cause of the issue is that xsane believes I am scanning an 8.5 x 14 inch document when I am in fact scanning an 8.5 x 11 letter. So the question is... can I change the size to 8.5 x 11? and if so, how? I have not found anything in the xsane Preferences.

Fedora :: Wine - Yum Says 27k File Size?

Mar 15, 2010

At some point my wine install died. I haven't used it a lot and I update my Fedora 11 regularly so I'm not sure what made it break. I thought "ok, just see if there's an updated version". 'yum info wine' says there is an update version and the file is 27k in size. Tried installing and no joy. Tried erasing wine and then installing; no joy. Yum says that the X86-64 and the i686 version are both 27k in size. I know for sure that is wrong. On a semi-nonFedora note, I tried compiling my own version of wine. It compiled fine after installing some dependencies and '-devel' files, but it gets the same crash as the Fedora version was getting.

OpenSUSE :: Size Of Share Stays The Same After Reinstall OS And Volume Extension?

Mar 30, 2010

I did hit a issue with volume extension after reinstalling the OS. SLES 11.2-2.6.31.5-0.1

Before the reinstall I had a single fiber volume with 1 logical drive XFS. I did extend the volume with a second fiber storage and the logical drive extension without any issues. After the reinstall OS everything still worked fine. At one point I did have to extend my volume again and also the logical drive in it. The extension went fine, also the logical drive got bigger on the server side.

But the issue is that the share size for the users stayed the same. It has something to do with the xfs files on the server that are getting installed when creating an xfs file system. I can simulate this issue.

Software :: Extend Volume Group Size Over The Remaining Space?

Mar 28, 2010

extend the size of a LVM2 volume group over the remaining free space available on a physical volume. My linux box is a Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 64bit, the 60GB hard disk has 2 win partition for about 19GB, a 1.5GB ext3 boot partition and finally a 36GB LVM partition (/dev/sda4) on which I created a volume group (volgrp) smaller 10GB than the 36GB physical volume (/dev/sda4). What I want now is to extend the size of volume group up to the end of physical volume. I tried to use the "vgextend volgrp /dev/sda4" but system answers me
with following output:

me@pc:~> sudo vgextend volgrp /dev/sda4
Physical volume '/dev/sda4' is already in volume group 'volgrp'
Unable to add physical volume '/dev/sda4' to volume group 'volgrp'.

Here the output of fdisk command:

me@pc:~> sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 7296 cylinders
