Jan 19, 2011is lvresize with --resizefs options re-size the Logical Volume and then re-size the file system? i mean we don't need to use resize2fs?I looked at man pages but it doesn't explain this option.

Mar 1, 2016I think I basically need to know whether it's possible to copy a partition whilst converting inode size, or if I need to create a new partition and copy the contents.
To give you the back story..
I have a system with 1 SSD and a raid array of 4 physical disks. One of the raid disks died, so I swapped it out, only to find the system wouldn't boot (had no bootloader?). I fired up a live session, and tried grub-install, but get an error like "The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly". Looking into it, it looks like the problem discussed here which is basically something to do with the partition having an inode size of 256 instead of 128.
Taking a step back for a moment.. I can't really remember installing this system, but is it possible I partitioned the SSD to ext4, with a default inode size of 256, then when the installer tried to install grub, it basically refused to install it on the SSD, so offered to install it on one of the raid disks, which happens to be the disk that died? So until now, unbeknown to me, the bootloader has been on one of my raid disks, while the root (bootable?) partition is on the SSD. That's my best guess as to what's gone wrong anyway..
Anyhow, currently this system has the SSD with the small bootable partition with an inode size of 256. As luck would have it, the new raid disk is sitting there not doing anything yet, so I have the space needed to copy that partition or it's contents onto the new raid disk.
So the question is, can I convert the inode size whilst copying the partition? Or do I need to just clone the partition, then create a new one with the correct inode size, then copy the contents of the old partition to the new one? In the latter case, is there any hidden secret sauce that won't be copied with `cp -R` or so? I mean, if I just create a partition with the correct inode size, and flag it bootable, then `cp -R` from the old partition to this new one, will it be functionally the same? or is there something special I need to do because this is the root OS partition?

Jun 5, 2010I have a Canoscan LiDE 30 scanner which works fine in Linux. I haven't used it in months, and never since moving from Jaunty x86_64 to Fedora 11 x86_64. This evening I suddenly need to scan two pages to send to someone via e-mail, and the recipient is desperate to receive them. Naturally, Xsane has decided this is the moment to screw me.
The problem: I cannot figure out how to tell Xsane that the page size is 8.5 11. It insists on scanning only the left side, 3.99 x 11. I cannot find a page size anywhere in any of the buttons.
In Preview I once got it to scan the entire page, but could not figure out how to save the image to file. Subsequently I have not been able to figure out how I did it. In any event, scanning from the small main window always scans 3.99 x 11. Adjusting the scan area manually in the Preview window allows me to change the size area in the small main window to 8.5 x 11, but when I then scan from the small main window it reverts to 3.99 x 11.
I have scanned the document a hundred times at least, each time trying different buttons, but nothing has succeeded in getting the full page.

Fedora :: Increasing Size Of System Partition?
Jul 29, 2011I am running Fedora 15 along with Windows 7 on my Dell laptop. Yesterday, when I was trying to install TeX Live, it stopped in between saying that there is no space left in File System. Even though I have space in my hard drive volumes, space seems to be running out of my system partition which is only 9GB in size (I guess!).I am posting a few results that might help you guys. I have an unformatted 15GB partition. How can I add it to my system partition? And is my var folder too big (1.5GB)? If yes, how do I backup its contents and then delete them? Additionally, the File System shows a folder 'media' (89GB) which links the C: drive that contains Windows 7 and my personal files. Should it remain that way or should I separate it? If the latter, how? I just couldn't find any.

Mar 17, 2011a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?

Nov 12, 2010Ubuntu 10.04, xsane 0.996, Brother MFC 240c scanner.I just finished writing a long dissertation on my problem with this scanning environment (which I will spare you). In a nutshell the resulting image, when printed, is smaller than the original document. In writing my dissertation for this post I determined that the cause of the issue is that xsane believes I am scanning an 8.5 x 14 inch document when I am in fact scanning an 8.5 x 11 letter. So the question is... can I change the size to 8.5 x 11? and if so, how? I have not found anything in the xsane Preferences.

Mar 15, 2010At some point my wine install died. I haven't used it a lot and I update my Fedora 11 regularly so I'm not sure what made it break. I thought "ok, just see if there's an updated version". 'yum info wine' says there is an update version and the file is 27k in size. Tried installing and no joy. Tried erasing wine and then installing; no joy. Yum says that the X86-64 and the i686 version are both 27k in size. I know for sure that is wrong. On a semi-nonFedora note, I tried compiling my own version of wine. It compiled fine after installing some dependencies and '-devel' files, but it gets the same crash as the Fedora version was getting.

And I have to add pictures to these pages. I don't know how to do even that I don't know web programming or HTML. But my images are about 1 mb in file size - I use to have windows and photoshop and there is this save for web feature where file size is reduced.I have this GIMP -program now - it's terrible compared to photoshop, but it's free. In GIMP there is no feature how to reduce file size for ex. 1mb to 20 Kb. How do I do this? Do you know any good program to do it?

May 14, 2009Recently I decided to utilize an IDS system. So I installed Open Source Tripwire. Not that I am too worried about anyone gaining a successful foothold on my system. But I wanted to learn and experience this IDS system. And no, this is not a new server install but I have never seen anything that resembles illegal activity. My server is an installed CentOS 5.3 with SELinux in targeted mode.
Tripwire has brought to light some interesting things. Installation states to verify rpm packages using rpm -Va. I have found that many of my system binaries are not the same size as if I were to replace them via yum. Most of the binaries are like twice the size compared to a newly installed package, of the same version. I'm not sure what to make of this. These programs are the original installs (CentOS 5.1) and I keep the system up to date regularly via yum.
I wonder if perhaps these system files installed are perhaps different then individual package size installed via yum? I have a hard time believing this as a package is a package. The only other possibility that comes to mind is that nearly my entire system has been hacked with new system files, and in a way that has revealed and suggest nothing. I find that far fetched as I have run this server for some time now and I should think I would know a problem as not a morning goes by that I haven't review my logs, as they are emailed to me. Thoughts about the difference in file sizes? Those installed via CentOS DVD verses those installed via yum?

May 19, 2010If you create a file on UNIX/linux with special chars, like touch "la*, you can't remove it with rm "la*. You have to use the inode number(you can if you add the before the name, I know, but you'd have to guess as a user that it was used in the file creation).
I checked the manpage for rm, but there's no metion of the inode number. Doing rm inodenumber doesn't work either.
What is the command for this?

Jun 16, 2011I have a machine running Arch Linux (2010, I believe) with a 6TB RAID-5 array hooked up to a Highpoint RocketRaid 2320. I've been having issues with the RAID controller's drivers and the latest Linux kernels thanks to the driver not being open-source, and as a result I am migrating the system to Windows Server.Problem is that the 6TB disk originally was comprised only of an ext4 partition.I shrunk the partition down as much as I could, and added a NTFS partition in the empty space so I could start moving files. That went fine. Problem is that now I need to shrink the ext4 partition again, move files, shrink again, etc. The second run through resize2fs is taking way longer than the first pass.It seems to be getting stuck at pass 3:

General :: NFS Mounted System Size?
Jan 13, 2010I have an NFS server running an older version of AIX that exports two disk partitions. Let's say /1 and /2I also have an NFS client running Fedora 9.I am able to NFS mount /1 and /2 from NFS server under /mnt/1 and /mnt/2 on the client.If I do a df command on the aix server,I see that /1 is 2Gb total and 1.7Gb is usedand /2 is 2Gb total and 1.4Gb is usedI see the same if I do a df command on the NFS client (Linux)Now, the confusing part is here: in the GUI of Fedora, if I go under /mnt and right click on /1 and check folder properties, it tells me that there is ~ 54 000 files (which i assume is the correct number) for a total of 5.3Gb! And for /2, properties indicate 1.2Gb. Where do these extra 3.6 Gb come from on /1...? and even the smaller difference for /2 confuses me (but this might be just the way different systems round off large numbers)?

Apr 22, 2011I am curious if perhaps I am doing something wrong extracting pages from a pdf doc using pdftk and creating a new file. I am only extracting the odd pages from the file and outputting them to a new file that is now only 20 pages instead of the input's 40 pages, yet the new output file is still 1.4Mb in size, the same as the original.
It seems strange to extract only half the pages of a large document and end up with a result that is the same size. how to streamline the resulting pdf's using pdftk?
BTW this is the command I am using, in case perhaps I am missing an option to optimize file size or something:
