Recently my Ubuntu has started dropping to bash shell instead of starting the graphical login. It first asks me login name and password(in the shell) then gives me a command line. I can then type startx to start it. It seems to start alright but that is not how it is supposed to work.
Doed anyone know how I can get it back to default behavior?
I am trying to load up the NVidia driver in Fedora 15 and am stuck. After boot up the graphical login screen comes up fine but when I go to log in I get an error message and it asks me to try to login again. I need to be able to get into text mode so I can edit some files but I do not know how to do this other that starting in multi-uder mode by editing /etc/inittab (or in FC15, editing some links in /etc/systemd/system/). Is there a way to get to text mode from the graphical loginscreen or do I need to get a rescue disk and startup in rescue mode to change files?

Now that the computer boot up normally but when it reaches the login screen it just emit a sound in the pc's speaker,he login screen flickers and is showed another login screen again and again and again (it's automatic). I can logon using the option single-user mode in the grub options, any idead on how can I fix it?

I lost everything possible on the graphical desktop as well as a log in screen for Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic). Since then I did a few things:1. apt-get install ubuntu-desktop2. apt-get install kubuntu-desktop3. apt-get remove kubuntu-desktopAfter all this, I still have the login screen for Kubuntu. But I don't want that. I want to get back to the Ubuntu login screen, and the orange colored desktop. Right now -- after I log in -- I only have a terminal to use. And I have the blue background of Kubuntu. What do I need to do to get rid of the Kubuntu graphics and back to my original login screen, plus the Ubuntu (karmic) graphics and toolbars / menus?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.
I just installed 10.04, and its taking me to the console login, rather than the graphical login. When I tried the live cd, the graphical environment was good. But after installation, I dont get the graphical login , so that I can get into the desktop.
I have a ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 card on ThinkPad T60. Everything was working on 8.10, and I decided to install 10.04 and now it doesnt work.
I have an iMac G4 that I installed Jessie on successfully. However, when it boots, one of the last messages is:
[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
Last line is something along the lines of:
fb: switching to nouveaufb from OFfb NVDA,NVMac
And then the text starts dissolving, and the entire screen cycles through different colors. I presume it is sitting at the graphical login prompt but it's not displaying correctly.
Based on some Google searches, it seems like I should be able to resolve this by editing /etc/modules but I can't get to that point. I have tried to get to a terminal using ctrl-alt-F1 through ctrl-alt-F12. No luck. I tried different yaboot options that were supposed to avoid using the video driver. No luck. How do I get the machine to boot straight to a regular text login instead of the X one?
This machine worked fine running Mac OS X this morning, so I don't think it's the hardware. What I can do.
I have downloaded ubuntu 10.10 64bit and have also burned it to good disk at 4x speed. when i boot it from cd everything goes simple and fine till it comes to a mixed orange colour screen and then nothing goes further, it just halts there with this full blank screen. so i have to do a hard shutdown. then i tried wubi.it went good. after rebooting it asks for installation options. there are five of them. in the normal mode the same thing gets repeated again. but in safe graphics mode ubuntu gets installed but few errors are shown after installation. there is no graphical screen and only this text screen comes again and again.

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
It used to be that this was a service that could just be disabled in System>Preferences>Startup Services, but this is no longer the case it seems. I've tried tinkering with the runlevels in gdm.conf, but haven't had any success with it so far. I've tried commenting out the startup code in the gdm.conf as well. Also no luck.
Most of what I've found are older guides for Karmic and earlier, so if anyone has a more up-to-date solution for how to disable the gdm so I can auto-login to a terminal in Lucid

I've updated my ubuntu from 10.10 ==> 11.04. Now I can't login using graphical inerface. System is loading but it stops right before I should see screen with login credentials. When I use ctrl+alt+del it's going to reboot properly, the same when i push the power button it's shutting down. System works fine in failsafex mode so I can assume there's a problem with xserver etc. Using Nvidia 9500GS.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed fedora 13, everything was going great, now when my computer boots it shows the slash screen and then a blank screen and nothing. its been doing it the past few days, after a few reboots it'll work but i'm unable to figure out what is causing it and today it won't show the graphical login screen at all. after the Fedora slash screen the screen goes black the power button shuts it down as normal. ctrl - alt - F2 works and lets me login text wise but I can't get the graphical login to work. nor can I boot to KDE or gnome.I do have Nvidia drivers installed, normall it'll show the nvidia slash screen before the graphical login prompt comes up and that doesn't happen. I did try init 5 and it says Nvidia drivers are loaded. 3d was working just fine I haven't done anything that I can think of to provoke this.

this doesn't mean that root can't login in a graphical mode? (I can login as root)

I had an old SuSE installation (v9 or 10, I forget) on which I used to remotely login to a kde session using xdmcp. I blew this away and installed 11.3, and I just can't get it to work. I'm pretty sure I've enabled all the things I should have. there a bug?(Incidentally, I had the same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 (with Gnome), and eventually found I needed an updated version of gdm. With X tunneled through a PuTTy ssh session I can display individual X windows no probs. Also, a VNC session is rejected out of hand.)

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am now at my 6th version of my opensuse build and I can't get it to start the graphical login.I am trying my build out on a VirtualBox using the live cd.This is what happens during installation :It will install properly. No error messages at all. I get the (graphical) options screen to select language and screen resolution settings, so far so good.I select the default (top) installation for my opensuse and hit enter.Then I will get the verbose progress and when it's finished, the verbose will ask me for my user name and password.Then I enter those correctly and the verbose will tell me to enjoy.I am then left with a blinking cursor, and don't know what to do next.
This is not what should have happened since in my build I had selected Configuration > Startup > Default runlevel > 5: Graphical loginI can find no reason for this failure since on my Windows system I have tried out several other Linux systems in the same way and never experienced this problem before.During the assembling of my packages I have payed close attention to select all packages required for a graphical login.An other problem is that although I selected the default language for my build to be Dutch, the default language during setup is still English.I hope there is someone who would be kind enough to be prepared to help me out, I am so eager to start trying out my self made OS.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI used KDE3 with 11.0 with some KDE4 apps till I needed some applications from the KDE4 factory tree and mistakenly left the repository active. Next time the online update also updated most of the applications I would rather keep, and as a result the KDE3 disappeared from the KDM login choices. So I have two questions:1. how to enable users to select KDE3 at login (currently I have to select failsafe mode and run startkde manually)2. how to replay back an update I didn't want to have?
Perhaps a combination of the above: can I upgrade to OS11.2 and keep KDE3? (please don't tell me to switch to KDE4, I acknowledge and appreciate the effort and the improvements that KDE4 got, but it's still not a replacement for KDE3 - there are so many simple things which are impossible in the new version)
I know how to manage them from a commandline but I was wondering if there are any graphical partition editors that understand and work with lvm2?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a recent "yum update", my laptop screen locks up during graphical boot. I use rhgb on the kernel line. The container on the screen fills up with charge and then the screen locks. I have to use the power button to reboot. If I press ESC when the boot splash appears (i.e., boot in text mode), it works.
If I set plymouth to "details" mode using
$ plymouth-set-default-theme details --rebuild-initrd
It boots up correctly. This is equivalent to a text boot screen. I doubt whether it is a video driver problem. I reinstalled the nvidia driver and it is working. I also reinstalled plymouth and plymouth-themes-*.
I've just installed fc 13 on my laptop. It's got windows and mepis linux on here also. the installer for fc only found windows and I was wondering if there's a way to modify the graphical grub screen to contain mepis linux or if i have to disable it and use a standard text screen for grub.
