I just got my computer up and running after several months of not working,nd have forgotten my password for the command prompt. Any help on where I could possibly find it. :/ odd question I know and I apologize. My second question is Im trying to use my android driod phone as a modem for the internet, I will be using the pdanet app so I am able to do this, yet during installing it on my phone it asked me if I was using a 32-bit windows
On my linux machine, I've enforced a password expiry policy every 45 days. So, today when I tried to ssh to the host, I get the typical "WARNING: Your password has expired". Fine, no big deal. But when I enter my new password and confirm, instead of giving me a login prompt, it tells me passwd all auth tokens updated successfully, then next line, "Connection to <host> closed". I can re-ssh back into that host and all is well from here, but it's a nuisance having to go through the extra step. Is this something in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config somewhere or perhaps a PAM config issue?
I have lost my password and user name for my installation of Fedora 8, i do not need to get it running again as i am preparing the pc for sale but i have several gigs of photos on there and i would like to rescue them if possible, i thought i might be able to do it with a live cd and copy the files on to a usb stick but wanted to ask firsts i am a real amateur ie i never managed to understand how every thing works really. It is in duel boot with win xp sp3 and i could not get to the photos from there

I just took a job and the admin password for the AFS is missing. How do I find/reset this password? I have the root password for the machine it is installed on.
I initially loaded Fedora 14 onto a Desktop and started to configure it to be a server but as soon as Iso software updates My network connection completely drops.
I have fedora 10 and am having problems with the wireless access. My computer uses the Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless Adapter. It connects to the network, it gets an ip address and a broadcast address, but it loses connection within 3 min. I'm also new dealing with linux and fedora.
I installed Fedora today, and I automatically had internet connection, I never had do configure anything myself. Then, I was playing around with VPN for a good while (trying to set up the VPN connection to my University), and now, I suddenly lost my connection to the internet!
But only Fedora can't connect anymore, the Windows PC has connection as well as my Mac OS X (I dualboot Linux on my MacBook). The Ethernet connection works as well, when I unplug the cable, Fedora gives me a message, but I just don't get into the internet!
Does anyone have an ides what I have to do? I don't know anything about network connections and I'm new to Linux...
I already restarted the Computer, but that didn't work, and Google didn't really held either.

I used the following link for guidance: [URL].. tried recovery mode in grub it always asks me the same thing:"Give root password for maintenance". I also tried to edit and boot the kernel unfortunately it did not work. So i never have a prompt, it still asks me for the password.

I just did a net install of Debian Jessie in VMWare Player. I very much enjoyed the install. I chose not to install a desktop. I set the root password as root. And the user as paul/paul. Now I cant login in root, it says I have the wrong password. How would you resolve this?

We have 2 computers connecting the wireless network. I reinstalled the linux machine and lose the saved wifi password. I don't have the router access password. I am looking at other computer running Mac and see wifi password as xxxxxxxx. Is there a way to see what wifi password is (from the Mac computer)? The "show password" button is disabled.
I have a Western Digital Elite external HDD given to me by a co-worker that cannot remember their passcode to unlock the drive. The external HDD is an Western Digital Elite Model = wdbaac6400ch
I'll start by admitting I'm bad at backing things up. My situation is that I have a desktop that was in storage for a year, and I don't have the login name or password anymore. Is there anyway to get around this roadblock, say by upgrading? I'd really like to save the files on the HD.If I can boot up in protected mode and login as root,it seems that I should be able to change the login and pwd.
I installed 10.10nbr on my wife's eee 901. Now she cannot remember her password. I've tried booting to recovery to use the passwd command, but that does not work. I believe I encrypted the home folder when I installed. Normally if I don't encrypt home, then I enable auto-login.
They involve pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 while booting the Ubuntu live CD.
If I allow the live CD to boot, I arrive at a Ubuntu GUI.
However, if I press Ctrl-Alt-F1, the monitor (HDMI TV) goes blank and indicates "no signal
correcting the password from a GUI (can I just go to a command prompt from there somehow, and work from that command prompt?) or getting my video to display when I press Ctrl-Alt-F1?
** (I remember trying to set up the system with NO password).
It's absurd to require one.
Especially so if a person with a live CD can simply change it (I guess at least the change would be detected).
I was using yum to update a server, then my putty session to the server dropped.
I reconnected, and now when i try to do a yum list updates, i get the following message:
Another app is currently holding the yum lock; waiting for it to exit... The other application is: yum Memory : 42 M RSS ( 53 MB VSZ) Started: Fri Dec 3 12:05:30 2010 - 06:55 ago State : Sleeping, pid: 21762
Does that mean its still installing the updates i asked it to, and i just need to wait for that to finish so i can see what updates are left? or am i really in a bad spot now?

I'm new to Linux (had some basic Unix experience in 1995 era). (Teenager) gave me HP2133 mini notebook running SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. Everything checks good (hardware and software), even wireless networking. Problem is she apparently created Admin/root password but says cannot remember. I cannot even set correct date time... yast is asking for root privilege: Command: /sbin/yast2 time Is there anything I can do to re-establish administrator privilege?
So I have forgotten my password, like a moron, and have been trying to reset/recover it. I have found the plethora of sites giving instructions on how to reset my password, such as psychocats.net So have gotten into the root shell and this is what I type. ls /home (gives me the name of my account) passwd (my account here) unknown user (account name here)
I have also tried doing the editing the boot kernel. I add this: rw init=/bin/bash Once I restart I get the root@(none) command prompt. Then I type passwd (username here) and get back ' unknown user
I have a server which is located in the basement. The server exports a few directories which I mount on my desktop using NFS. From time to time, the connection gets lost. The server is also not always on. I can't change that part, so I worked out a script which notifies me when it's going down, and when it's back up again. It also mounts everything back. However, As soon as I loose the connection, my desktop seems to be gone. KDE doesn't work, but I can use a few applications like Konsole, google-chrome, firefox, stuff like that. But the plasma-desktop around it hangs. As soon as the connection gets back again, everything works. I have this issue only when my desktop is running while I loose the connection to the server. If it's down when I start my desktop, everything works properly. Unless the server comes alive, the nfs directories are mounted and the connection is lost again.
The computer is a K9n6pgm2+ mainboard w/2gig of RAM and an AMD Phenom Triple Core. My Harddrives are /dev/sda=320gig and /dev/sdb=80gig. Resident on sda is Ubuntu 10.04 (fresh install) w/Windows XP installed at the final 40 gigs, installed after Ubuntu install and then used the 9.10 live CD to reinstall GRUB. On /dev/sdb is Ubuntu 9.10.I installed the fresh Lucid install 3 months ago when I purchased the 320 gig HDD to replace the failing 40 gig and it has run perfectly until yesterday. I presently have a 2Wire Modem located at 172.16.0.1 and I have a new Motorola in the mail but I presently cannot get Lucid to find my internet connection.
If I boot into XP everything is fine. i can go all over the net. If I boot into Karmic, all is well. I am typing this in Karmic so it is strictly a Lucid problem and I have tried all that I know to do and I really want my Lucid install back.
Log file viewer also can't provide much help. I'm also affected by this issue that has been gone on my PC for almost 2 months, now. I've been forced to re-install Ubuntu ( from 9.04 to 10.04 ) countless time. As other users mentioned in their thread, the problems occurred randomly. Sometimes right after start-up, sometimes after 10 min to an hour of PC usage and sometimes no freeze at all. But the symptoms seems similar though on different component of hardwares. Me, myself, my PC always started to display freezing symptoms after 2-3 days of any Ubuntu fresh installations. The only way to re-boot are through RSEIUB/O ( and luckily I've never failed to do so ). Its just maybe took countless time of Ctrl + Alt + Del, before I could enter Grub menu and after that Ubuntu. Seems like that BIOS doesn't recognize HDD ( where the Ubuntu situated ), but oddly it ( BIOS ) only rcognize the CD/DVD drive . Lately, to overcome this HDD problem, I tried to pull out the SATA cable connected to CD/DVD drive and left only the SATA cable to HDD. And guess what, I've never encounter this unrecognized HDD problem for the past 2 days. I suspected the cause off all this issues are maybe the AsRock G31M-VS2 mobo that I've just installed about 2 month ago. But certainly, this issue never back me off my love to Ubuntu. As long its Open Sources.
recently i have combined 2 machines into 1. after doing this, the ping to the new machine stops, for no apparent reason, and consequently all traffic to/from the machine also stops. when using the two machines individually this never happened.Lastly, if i restart the network, it kills everything (like the network just wont restart - it reaches the last interface and hangs), and if i reboot the machine, it seems to be fine for about 3-4hours.has anyone seen anything like this when connecting a large number of hosts to 1 gateway, using linux as the router?
I used to be able to connect to the net using my laptop {Ubuntu 9.10 on Compaq nx7400.}by means of wi-fi . I do not know what I have done but I lost the facility to connect to the net.I noticed the Network Manager disappeared from the notification area. I manged to put it back. It detects the signal from the router and after entering my password it displays Connection Established but I still cannot access the net and does not load any web pages. I have the same Ubuntu 9.10 Desk on a memory stick, when I use it on the laptop it works fine.
I enclose a screenshot of iwconfig.I did sudo lshw -C network and it shows DISABLED. How do I enable it ? Are there any other info that I should supply and what and how.
