I want b able to recover or reset the password that i lost. I have ubunto installed with windows vista. I used the following link for guidance: [URL].. tried recovery mode in grub it always asks me the same thing:"Give root password for maintenance". I also tried to edit and boot the kernel unfortunately it did not work. So i never have a prompt, it still asks me for the password.

I'll start by admitting I'm bad at backing things up. My situation is that I have a desktop that was in storage for a year, and I don't have the login name or password anymore. Is there anyway to get around this roadblock, say by upgrading? I'd really like to save the files on the HD.If I can boot up in protected mode and login as root,it seems that I should be able to change the login and pwd.

I installed 10.10nbr on my wife's eee 901. Now she cannot remember her password. I've tried booting to recovery to use the passwd command, but that does not work. I believe I encrypted the home folder when I installed. Normally if I don't encrypt home, then I enable auto-login.

I don't recall my Ubuntu password.**
I found instructions regarding recovery.
They involve pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 while booting the Ubuntu live CD.
If I allow the live CD to boot, I arrive at a Ubuntu GUI.
However, if I press Ctrl-Alt-F1, the monitor (HDMI TV) goes blank and indicates "no signal
correcting the password from a GUI (can I just go to a command prompt from there somehow, and work from that command prompt?) or getting my video to display when I press Ctrl-Alt-F1?
** (I remember trying to set up the system with NO password).
It's absurd to require one.
Especially so if a person with a live CD can simply change it (I guess at least the change would be detected).

I just did a net install of Debian Jessie in VMWare Player. I very much enjoyed the install. I chose not to install a desktop. I set the root password as root. And the user as paul/paul. Now I cant login in root, it says I have the wrong password. How would you resolve this?

So I have forgotten my password, like a moron, and have been trying to reset/recover it.
I have found the plethora of sites giving instructions on how to reset my password, such as psychocats.net
So have gotten into the root shell and this is what I type.
ls /home
(gives me the name of my account)
passwd (my account here)
unknown user (account name here)
I have also tried doing the editing the boot kernel.
I add this: rw init=/bin/bash
Once I restart I get the root@(none) command prompt. Then I type passwd (username here) and get back ' unknown user

The author (somewhere on these Ubuntu forums directed........ Ctrl + Alt + F1 which I thought was going to be the "Terminal" but nothing similar. I have about a half dozen different names/passwords for Ubuntu but none will work to log in. How to get out of this text console and back to Ubuntu GUI? And, how to read my lost LogIn name and password for this "Text Console"?

I'm new to Linux (had some basic Unix experience in 1995 era). (Teenager) gave me HP2133 mini notebook running SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. Everything checks good (hardware and software), even wireless networking. Problem is she apparently created Admin/root password but says cannot remember. I cannot even set correct date time... yast is asking for root privilege:
Command: /sbin/yast2 time
Is there anything I can do to re-establish administrator privilege?

I'm really new to Linux so this will probably sound like a pretty naive question to most users, but how do you change the root password? To install Java, I have to type # su into Terminal, which then asks for the password. What's weird is that when I start typing a password, no characters show up. I don't know if this is supposed to happen or not.I've found a bunch of different sites on the Internet that explain how to change the root password, but none of them seem to work for my specific work station.
I've got Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. In the GRUB boot menu, I can choose to boot normal or in recovery mode (I'm led to believe older versions don't have this option).I've tried typing # sudo passwrd into Terminal, but I already have a root password set up apparently, so I can't change it there.

I thought these were the same password?In-fact, they WERE the same password on the set-up I currently have. But now, weirdly, I can log in fine but I the exact same password is not using in order to perform admin tasks.I've tried a recovery mode, console, and then "password (username)" in order to reset the password. This does reset the password I need to use to log in, but the password still does not work for performing admin tasks

I have a rather difficult problem. Every time I need root privileges and I am asked to authenticate (i.e. Update Manager, mounting a partition, etc), the password window comes up, shakes and immediately closes, leaving me with no chance to enter a password. What to do?edit: this is NOT the login window, just the little dialog that pops up when you need elevated privileges.

I know this has probably been asked too many times here but I need to secure my emails. Personal matters of course. But yeah. I use the program "Password and Encryption Keys" to generate a key to sign my emails with but I do not know what to do. To be blunt, I'm stupid when it comes to this. IF not, steps in creating a key? and giving it (my public key) to the significant other? Finding where both keys are? Implementing it into Thunderbird? If it helps any here's some extra information: Ubuntu distro: Ubuntu 10.04 Email client: Thunderbird
