Fedora :: Find The RcS File So Can Change Stuff Like UTC
Jun 17, 2010
I can't seem to find the rcS file so I can change stuff like UTC, local time, etc. This is supposed to be located in /etc/default
I am running Fedora 13. Anyone who knows where I can find this (or a similar) file?

How do I change the ugly default orange color for the loading bars and stuff? I know how to change things with the window manager, but that only changes the frames and "min, max, close" buttons. I like everything about the theme I have, and the way the window manager is set, except it uses that ugly orange color when things are loading or downloading. How do I change that part? Can I change only that part by itself?

how I managed this, but somehow during a reinstall I changed the ownership of all my home stuff to root, instead of my normal username. So now nothing loads, unless I sudo it. I had to use sudo just to open firefox.

I'm a absolute "server- noob" but I've got some experienced with desktop linux and want to build my own file server to access my stuff over the internet. I'm using dropbox for a while now like a cloud drive by simply mounting the "private" folder (which I encrypted with encfs/BoxCrypt) in order to cross-platform use important files. The problem is that Dropbox only provides 2 GB for free and I don't know how secure my data is up there. Moreover I don't wanna always sync all files locally.
I got an intel atom machine standing around and so I want to build my own file server to provide the same or at least a similar service.
1. Which type of server application provides a "network drive" that computers (several users) from the internet can access?
2. What's the best way to encrypt my data and transmission in order to make the system absolutely unattackable/unreadable from outside?
3. Is there a service that can provide a dropbox-style sync mechanism?
4. Which distro should I use? I'd prefer a non-desktop enviroment solution but never had anything to do with it. Is that possible for an average linux user?
I'm aware that this solution won't be very fast because of the limited upload of a standard internet connection but that would be ok! It's more that I want to have the possibiltiy to access all my data as a thin-client anywhere, anytime on any machine and still be on the safe side. I know that this is some kind of contradiction but what would be the best compromise? I know some questions may sound stupid but I really never had anything to do with servers at all in the past...

When i logged into my desktop, i got a notification that said there was boot messages. I remember trying to find this before in /var/log, so that i could investigate why i couldn't get the nvidia drivers to work (which i now know is because i'm using 14-beta, which has a debugging kernel), but couldn't find it.
Code:
Welcome to Fedora

I've got something or someone downloading from me, probably scraping, and i can't figure out WHAT is using all of my bandwidth, and WHERE it's coming from.I don't know what SERVICE its from (eg, is this an apache request, or DNS DOS), what FILES are being accessed (if any, eg apache requests/scrape), and what IP is requesting them.My apache logs isn't showing anything that makes me thing i'm being scrapped. I'm kinda stuck in a brain fart right now and can't remember how to track this down, but the long and short is that all of my band width is being consumed, and 1 of my CPU cores is staying maxed out ("top" says that it's the avahi service).I've shut off the following services 1 by 1 to see if any of them would cause a drop in network usage, and none of them did:
apache
samba
postfix

I was recently using OO-calc to try to organize some table-based data to clean it up (delete unneeded columns) before converting it to a database insert statement. While doing this, at one point, open office changed the grid width and height to being really small. I changed it back to normal, but now even the font is really small, but the font-size is set to 10 px. I can't figure out (a) what happened, and (b) how to put it back to normal. I'll attach 2 images to make it more clear about what it's actually doing...

After having some problems getting firefox 4 to install from spots i got wondering, in the general case when stuff from these repos fails (the repos hosted by fedora not any arbitrary repo i find on the internet) where should i report problems? Bugzilla (though didnt think they where *officially supported*)? Contact the person running it? Just accept the stuff is offered as-is and might not allways work?

Just picked up a SanDisk Sansa mp3 player. I used the package manager to DL a FAT16 sorter, but that didn't seem to work. Does anyone know of a package I might use or how to get this to work. Also, is there a script anyone has written to add all of the plugins and multimedia stuff on high use or the regular.

I've seen it every where with zero resolutions, I have extremely high ram usage with nautilus .
[code]...
Just opening folders with lots of directories takes forever. I would have assumed it all as normal but I just build a windows 7 machine and have it on the same network. Windows 7 SMB scan of the same shares is virtually instant where as my Fedora machine creeps along. Also it never give back the ram used. It ramps up and up, leak? Almost the same hardware. Both with tons of ram. Nautilus previews are all turned off but still same slowness. Network speeds are the same. Both on gigabit with about the same download speeds. Is there ever going to be a revamp/change/fix or do I need to start looking for other file browsers?

So I have created a Bash script with the intent of the program to change the names of the files in a folder's subdirectory. The code recognises the individual subdirectories, then is able to enter into one and list the files individually, but when it tries to change their information it says;' cannot stat ' : ' No such file or directory 'As if it is looking in the directory that contains the Bash script, not its subdirectory. It is essentially saying, I see a file here called FILE but sorry, I can't change FILE because FILE doesn't exist. kweh?Is this something outside the capabilities of Bash? Am I asking too much of it? Can Bash only manipulate files that are in the same folder as the script?
Code:
#!/bin/bash
echo enter directory

I recently upgraded to Fedora 15 and am super-happy with it. Unfortunately, I have a minor issue that I haven't yet figured out how to fix: I can't change the default applications or the file type associations. For instance, I'd like to set Chromium as my default browser. When I first login, I tell it to set itself as default. But after I end my session and log back it, Firefox is back to being the default browser.
I have the same issues when trying to change what applications open filetypes. .rtf files have been opening in Wordpad in Wine. When I try to change it to Writer through the "Open with" dialog, it retains the change for that session but resets after I log out. I actually ended up having to uninstall Calibre because it was opening .odt files instead of LibreOffice and I couldn't change it permanently.
