Fedora Networking :: Find Out What File Is Being Downloaded From What IP?

Jul 24, 2011

I've got something or someone downloading from me, probably scraping, and i can't figure out WHAT is using all of my bandwidth, and WHERE it's coming from.I don't know what SERVICE its from (eg, is this an apache request, or DNS DOS), what FILES are being accessed (if any, eg apache requests/scrape), and what IP is requesting them.My apache logs isn't showing anything that makes me thing i'm being scrapped. I'm kinda stuck in a brain fart right now and can't remember how to track this down, but the long and short is that all of my band width is being consumed, and 1 of my CPU cores is staying maxed out ("top" says that it's the avahi service).I've shut off the following services 1 by 1 to see if any of them would cause a drop in network usage, and none of them did:

apache
samba
postfix

Fedora :: Find A Configuration File Where "metacity" Is Located?

Dec 6, 2009

I have Fedora 11, x86_64, fresh install four days ago on newly formatted disk. Gnome desktop.

I have been installing and configuring things, rebooting after every few application installations. I have been rebooting so often because this is the fifth distro that I have tried. In the previous four I ended up lacking a window manager, and in two cases I lost the gnome-panel as well. At first I was blaming the latest version of Gnome, which is why I installed Fedora 11 instead of 12. But yesterday I got bitten by the same bug again. In the present instance only metacity is missing. I can function just fine if I just start metacity from a command line after logging in (which is how I am running at the moment.

Something is making metacity not load after I log in.

In an effort to fix this I created a new user. The new user has the standard Gnome desktop, complete with metacity. So the question is, what does the new user have or not have that is different from my real user?

I was pretty sure the problem was in Gnome, not X, so I started polluting the new user's installation by copying config files from my real installation. I started with .gconf, then .gconfd, then .gnome2. I logged out and back in again after each folder was copied, hoping to track down the offending one.

I finally found it - the ~/.local folder. As soon as I copied my ~/.local folder to the new user the new user lost metacity after logging in.

Of course, before copying one of my folders to the new user I renamed the new user's folder by appending -original to it. I ran diff on the two folders, and there are lots of differences. Mostly the new user doesn't have many application launchers in ~/.local/share/applications/, but I don't think those would make a difference.

I was hoping to find a configuration file where "metacity" is located in the -original file and missing in the new one. So far I have not been successful. Yet for sure *something* in that folder is the culprit. Does anyone have any knowledge of what Gnome does with this folder?

Fedora :: Creative Ways To Find A "lost" File?

Jan 2, 2010

for several weeks now I have been looking for a particular file, probably (but not certain) a jpg, that I used for the label of a cd that I made in 2005. Since then I have migratedhrough numerous Fedora versions and from hard disk to hard disk, and now I have almost no recollection ofhat the filename is. In addition, there's a chance that some file data might have been lost when I copied from hard disk to hard disk. The file might even have been deleted (though I kind of doubt it). Can anyone suggest good ways to find it? I want to ideally find the exact same image because I'm trying to do a few more copies of the cd, and I think I used (gack) Windows labelmaker software when I did it back in 2005. Now I'm trying to redo it in Linux only. But I feel lame if I have to end up using a different image for the cd than the one I used before.

I've found some of the songs I was working on at that time, liner notes, etc., and I've looked through folders with files I thought were done at similar times, etc., etc., but short of running "find / -name '*.jpg'" and looking through each and every file I am wondering if there are other ways to locate it

Fedora Installation :: No CD Block Device From LiveCD, Then "unable To Find A Medium Containing A Live File"?

Sep 12, 2010

the message on the title only happens with Ubuntu. In Fedora, it just stops booting from LiveCD with "WARNING: Cannot find root file system!". The rest of the symptoms are the same.I'm trying to install Fedora LiveCD on an IBM i Series notebook (model 1161-21X). It's a Celeron powered unit with RAM expanded to 512MB. It has a 10GB HDD, and an internal CD-ROM drive. Although it has two USB ports (1.1), it cannot boot from a USB drive, so no pendrive nor external CD unit solution possible. When I boot from LiveCD, it stops booting with the message above. Looking atsg, there's no CD-ROM driver loaded. Also, there's a char device for sg0, but no block device for it, so no way to mount it. It seems that the driver module has been removed from the kernel. I'm currently running Fedora Core 5 in it. This very same problem happens with any Ubuntu newer that 6 or any Fedora post 7.

OpenSUSE :: Find Which Package Provides A Particular File?

Jan 27, 2010

I was trying to build an RPM today and the compilation errored out because the file glibconfig.h couldn't be found. I managed to track it down to the package glib2-devel.The problem is that I couldn't find a way to do this via zypper. In Mandriva I would've just done 'urpmf glibconfig.h' and it would've told me that it's provided by the package glib2-devel.

Is there equivalent functionality in zypper? (glibconfig.h is an easy pick as being related to glib, but some header file names might be more obscure for example)
