Fedora :: Fc10 X Fails To Start When Monitor Turned Off?

Feb 11, 2009

I have fedora 10 installed and when my monitor is turned off the X session fails to start because it can not probe for settings. Is there a way to hard code the settings for x instead of letting them assign dynamically on boot?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Kernel Update Fails To Install - 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10

Feb 19, 2009

I just tried to update to kernel 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10 (x86_64) at the suggestion of the gnome update widget, and the process hung. A bunch of other things were updating at the same time, many of which were related to audacity or wine.

I'm not sure just what was being updated, because the option to review which updates are available does not work - when I click on it, nothing happens, but when I take the other choice (install all updates), I take pot luck. It would be nice to be able to choose which programs to update, and to be able to upgrade the kernel independently, but I don't seem to be able to do that at the moment.

Fedora Networking :: Dhclint Wlan0 Fails Since 2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.x86_64

Mar 16, 2009

Since 2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.x86_64, dhclient wlan0 doesn't seem to work any more.

However, bizarrely, dhclient eth0 does (to the same D-link wireless router).

The AP shows connected - tail /var/log/messages

No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.

WINXP connects just fine. This (B43) has worked nicely ever since FC10 came out, and I was able to use the WiFi at all kinds of places on a recent trip. Other than a couple of yum updates, I don't think anything else has changed since. Other devices on the wlan are getting their DHCP requests satisfied correctly.

Is anyone else having this problem since about a week ago? Perhaps there's something really obvious I'm missing. I can manually assign an IP address to wlan0, manually edit the routing tables and edit /etc/resolv.conf, and then Wifi seems to work OK, so it doesn't seem to be b43 itself unless it is dropping DHCPOFFERS. If this isn't a regression, does anyone have any tips about how to debug this?

Fedora Installation :: Fc10 - Video - Monitor Becomes Alternating Black And White Horizontal Bands

Apr 2, 2009

I am doing a new install of i86_64 on a system with a wide 22" monitor. The initial screen displays fine but after selecting "new install" the monitor becomes alternating black and white horizontal bands. the cursor is visible and tracks the mouse. The monitor is an Acer with fixed 37kHz horiz x 60 Hz vert. I assume that the gui is using a fixed (and different ) set of frequencies and is not plug-n-play. I just finished an i386 32 bit installation on another machine which went without a hitch.

Fedora Installation :: FC10 On ESATA Drive Won't Start?

Mar 5, 2009

I am new to Fedora 10 and encountered the following problem. I installed FC10 on an external eSATA hard drive (sdb) on my laptop which already has some other Linux distros on sda. I used a DVD that came with the Fedora 10 Bible, so I can assume that the DVD had no problems. The installation went OK and I got no error messages. I added the following lines to the menu.lst file of the distro that I use to boot all my distros.

title Fedora 10
root (hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686 ro root=/dev/sdb2 rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686.img

When I boot Fedora, the blue bar at the bottom of the screen goes half-way, then gives me the error message: "mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' "

Fedora Installation :: Computer Cannot Start Up After Deleting FC10?

Jun 1, 2009

My laptop is dual-boot with Windows XP and FC10 co-existing. Yesterday, I wanna re-install FC10, so I formated(deleted) all linux partitions in Windows XP. Disaster happened when i rebooted computer: the computer cannot startup at all? Now, I don't know how to deal with it. I wanna know: what can i do to start up the computer into Windows? In my opinion, computer should work well without one system in dual-boot mode. If you format C: drive on which windows are installed, for instance, the computer can boot into FC10 normally. Why it die deleting FC10?

Debian :: Monitor / Video Output Turned Off In Wheezy?

Apr 2, 2015

Fairly new to debian and linux and general. I have an install of debian wheezy (to run LinuxCNC). I went in the graphical interface to the 'monitor' section and changed the screen resolution. I had two monitors, one labeled monitor and another (I think) Lenovo Monitor.

There was a check box in the screen monitor window that said something like, "Don't use this display." I figured it might turn off the lenovo and default to the generic monitor listed. I clicked it and my monitor turned OFF!! I tried another monitor (Dell in this case) and same thing, no video output.

I asked on the LinuxCNC forum and googled, but I just dont' seem to be able to figure out what or how to get to the solution.

I have been able to Ctrl-Alt-F1 to open a terminal. But, I can't find any the right files and found that the xrandr command 'should' work, but doesn't.

Whenever I issued the xrandr command (other than man xrandr), I get "Can't Open Display"

I did find two outputs VGA1 and LVDS1 in this file /var/log/Xorg.0.log and this coincides with what I saw in the monitor window. These are the 'output' types and if the xrandr command worked I'd issue something like : xrandr --ouptut LVDS1 --auto

I read about xorg.conf, but I could not find any xorg.conf files in the etc/X11 folder. In some of the info I found, the xorg.conf was replaced in this or a recent version of Debian by something else and confuses me.

One person had a similar issue and he got to this directory: $HOME/.e/e/config/standard" and found files such as:
"e_randr.cfg" plus "e_randr.1.cfg" thru "e_randr.9.cfg"

But, I can't get to that folder. How to turn on my monitor display?

Ubuntu :: Monitor Randomly Loses Signal And Cannot Be Turned Back On

Feb 11, 2011

I have this issue with two different computers. One is a dell optiplex gx60 and the other a hp pavilion a317x. The two monitors are a hp pavilion f70 and a nec mulitsync lcd.

The problem I have is the monitor will randomly turn off like it would if the signal is lost but the computer is still running. I cannot get the monitor back on unless I do a hard shutdown and reboot. Sometimes it will happen within minutes of turning on the computer and sometimes it will take hours or days. I have had this problem with ubuntu 10.04 which is currently installed, mint 9 xfce, and mint 9 fluxbox. The only distro that it did not do this on was peppermint ice and windows xp.

I don't know at this point if it is hardware or software related. I am new to linux so I don't know what else to look for.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Switch Can't Be Turned On Again After Being Turned Off

Feb 2, 2010

The wireless connection works fine. The wireless switch automatically turns itself on every time I start the computer. However, after turning it off, I can't ever turn it on again unless I restart the computer. And because of this, the wireless connection is disabled until the next time I start the computer.I don't think this is a hardware problem because the switch can be turned on and off, although not in the way I expect.

I'm using ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 4740G. The command [lspci | grep Network] shows Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). the [rfkill list] command shows (when the switch is on)

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

and, as expected, shows (when the switch is turned off)

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes

I just want to be able to turn the switch on or off at any time I want as long as the computer is still on.

Fedora :: OpenOffice - Fails To Start For One User?

Apr 13, 2010

on the risk of starting another OO thread I would like to share my problem to resolve it... (found this 'challenge' nowhere on the forum) installed openoffice apps on my F11 64-bit box through add/remove software until some time ago everything worked well for all users now with one specific user OO hangs upon startup when opening a file (only displaying splash screen, nothing further). this user is nowhere blocked intentionally

to resolve I did:tried other users, all works well (starting from menu, opening files in Nautilus by double-click) renamed ~/.openoffice.org to ~/.openoffice.org.bak so new prefs are created, but new attempt results the same (freeze upon start) copied ~/.openoffice.org from well-run user, but new attempt results the same (freeze upon start)

installed gnumeric as an alternative but I like to bring this to a happy ending.giving enough eyeballs the solution must be out here somewhere

Fedora :: Amarok Fails To Start On 12 After Update?

I updated Fedora 12 a couple of weeks ago, and Amarok stopped working. The splash screen came up, and hung there until clicked on. Looking at the process, it uses 49-50% CPU (weird since it's on an Acer One netbook with an Atom N270 single core processor) and the memory footprint steadily increases. I hung on for another update to see if that fixed it, but one came through today with an update to Amarok, but it is still broken.

Fedora Servers :: HTTPD Fails To Start On Boot

Aug 24, 2010

I'm completely stumped by a problem with httpd in Fedora 13. It fails to start on boot: I can see: Starting htpd: FAILED, in /var/log/boot.log, but I can't find anything else in messages, audit.log or anywhere else that gives me any clue why. The weird thing is that running:
run_init service httpd start
after boot _works_ and the server runs fine, but even when it's running OK,
service httpd status
reports
httpd dead but subsys locked

I'm guessing that the problem somehow relates to selinux, but I can't find anything in the audit logs that gives me a clue. How to turn on more logging so that I can get closer to the problem. I finally discovered the cause. This system was originally configured to use network services directly, without NetworkManager. It had been upgraded a number of times since installation. It seems that over time, if you have turned off NetworkManager, the defaults have changed. Used to be that the network services was 'enabled' by default (hence started at run time). Now, the default is 'disabled'. Httpd couldn't start because there was no network to start on. Enabling network services at boot time fixed this. I guess I should have noticed this. But one might think that httpd failing to start because of the lack of a network might at least give a warning message in the logs about the reason.
