I am using a VPN proxy service for privacy reasons. I have configured NetworkManager and it's PTPP VPN plug-in successfully.

I would like to configure NetworkManager to drop connections when the VPN fails so that I do not suffer 'privacy leaks' when it happens.

Fedora Networking :: Unable To Start An Openvpn-connection Via The "nmcli"-command To Control NetworkManager

Jun 4, 2011

As I reported in this bug:[URL].. root is not able to start an openvpn-connection via the "nmcli"-command to control NetworkManager, whereas my user does not run in any problems with this command. My error output when starting as root is as follows:

Code:
# nmcli con up id "my-openvpn"
Active connection state: unknown
Active connection path: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/5
state: VPN connecting (need authentication) (2)
Error: Connection activation failed: no valid VPN secrets.

Does anybody know what to do about this strange behaviour? The vpn-secret seems to be stored in the gnome-keyring and in the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/my-openvpn simultaneously. But root cannot access any of these. Why this is important? I'm trying to set up a dispatcher-script to automatically start openvpn on eth-connection. but this does throw the exact error from above (no valid vpn secrets..).

Fedora X86/64bit :: 14 NetworkManager Fails To Enable Wireless

Dec 23, 2010

I'm using a Lenovo B450 laptop with Fedora 14 x86_64. The laptop has a Atheros AR5001 wireless adapter and is identified at lscpi.

Additionally lspci reports that the kernel driver in use and the kernel module for that device is ath5k.On a fresh install of Fedora 14, the NetworkManager applet seem to behave well at enabling and disabling wireless (remember the "Enable Wireless" checkbox). Though wireless was always at disabled state at every boot time, even if it was enabled at the toggle button on the laptop. Now that, after I have fully updated the system (yum -y update), I'm unable to enable wireless. Clicking on the "Enable Wireless" menu item on the NetworkManager applet has no effect, and I've a confirmed report that the update broke this functionality (I reinstalled F14, and then it was working, full system update broke the function). After the update, the kernel version is 2.6.35.10-72.fc14.x86_64 and the NetworkManager version is 0.8.1-10.git20100831.fc14.x86_64.

CentOS 5 Networking :: NetworkManager Won't Start / Get It To Work?

Oct 12, 2009

I've been running CentOS on my laptop for a few weeks now. I don't know what happened today, but when I boot up, the NetworkManager wont show up on the panel, and I don't have access to wireless networks or Internet. I tried booting my Windows partition and the wireless works fine. I can't seem to remember any latest change I've made aside from the wallpaper =) Any ideas where I should start debugging? I could see the module "iwl3945" still loaded. Here's a manual type of my lsmod | grep iwl3945

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Use Zonet ZEW2500P Module - NetworkManager Won't Start On Booting

May 2, 2010

After upgrading to Lucid said adapter is nonfunctional - NetworkManager won't start on booting (I'm using 2870sta module) and it finds no networks - neither does WICD. The device itself is identified: "lsusb" gives a line "Bus 001 Device 005: ID 148f:3070 Ralink Technology Corp." "iwconfig" gives nothing under lo and eth0 and this under wlan0:

Code:

RTxx70 Wireless ESSID:""

Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:0 dbBm Noise level:-143 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

And a "lsmod | grep -e rt2 -e rt3" gives:

Code:

(Note: I had a similar problem going from Jaunty to Karmic, but blacklisting rt2800usb in my blacklist.conf fixed it. No such luck this time.)Using a Zonet ZEW2500P.x86-64 Lucid.

Ubuntu :: Autologin And Networking Fails To Start

Jan 21, 2011

I've got a couple of nagging issues that may or may not be related to each other. First, although I have this machine set to log me on automatically (I'm the only user ever and there's no public access) it doesn't; I get the standard login welcome screen. In the system menu (from Applications) I have two login managers: "Login Screen" and "Login Screen (GDM2)". The first of these shows I'm configured for automatic login, as does the custom.conf file in /etc/gdm. However when I click its "unlock" button, it flashes orange momentarily but nothing else happens. The second manager doesn't seem to have any effect on the problem...

The other issue is that my networking fails to start during boot-up; I'm not using the network manager applet and am not starting it; instead I have the three NICs in the machine (which serves as the router and gateway for my LAN) configured in /etc/network/interfaces. Once I am logged in, I can run "sudo service networking start" from a Terminal window and everything works properly, but adding that same line to /etc/rc.local (minus the "sudo" of course) had no effect on the problem. Both issues happen only at boot time, and since this machine normally runs 24/7 except immediately after certain updates or when troubleshooting they're not show-stoppers, but I greatly prefer to have my systems working the way I've configured them rather than going off in other directions!

Fedora Networking :: NetworkManager Does Not Come Up In GNOME

Nov 25, 2009

I have no problems seeing the networks available and connecting to a network in KDE. But there is no network manager in GNOME. I might have messed up with the settings earlier. What I can do though is run knetwork manager every time I start up (or add it to start up programs). But that opens up the KDE wallet which would rather avoid.I am thinking I need to install something related to NetowrkManager.

Ubuntu Networking :: Rtl8185B Driver Fails To Start Successfully

Sep 14, 2010

I just bought a new TrendNet TEW-423PI for my ubuntu box (10.04) and have not been able to get it to start. This has the RealTek RTL-8185. I first tried starting up out with the stock install with the built in r8180 drivers. No luck. The board is seen (visible in lshw -C network), but the network device (eth1, or wlan0) never gets created. I googled and got the suggestion that I should install the RealTek r8185 drivers. I did that. I still have the same problem. Looks like something is going wrong in the drivers. Here's what I see in lshw:

Code:

Fedora Networking :: Where To Get Networkmanager Gnome Applet

Feb 5, 2009

after fiddling around with compiz-fusion and KDE, my network suddenly disappeared. I looked in the package manager and apparently I don't have the gnome applet for networkmanager...but everything else I seem to have (the git version not svc or w/e) Anyone know if installing the applet will let me choose my wireless network and connect to it? Right now I think so, but what I have to do is boot into windows, find the package on the web and download it, then boot into fedora and install it

where I can find the fedora 10 networkmanager-gnome package (git version for x86_64)? I looked around and found the svc version and a git version for i386, but my OS is x86_64 and I couldn't find any git versions of it for 64-bit fedora's. btw, I have no idea what git and svc mean, but when I tried to install the svc version, it told me I had to install svc versions for all the other networkmanager packages...

Symptoms: I left-click on NetworkManager, select "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network", enter my information, NetworkManager does a few things, and finally I'm told that NetworkManager cannot connect to my network.

Fedora Networking :: NetworkManager Static Ip And Routing ?

Apr 14, 2009

I have just installed Fedora 10 on an old laptop and was quite impressed with how smoothly it all went ... until it came to setting up networking!

I have battled for three days now and I'm almost there;
- installed updated firmware to the built in Broadcom 4306 wireless network adapter
- got NetworkManager to work with a static ip address by manually editing the ifcfg-wlan0 file
- managed to get the WPA security to work

The only problem I am left with is that there is no default route; if I set one up using: ip r a default via 10.1.1.1 dev wlan0

Then everything starts working.

If I try to add routes using the NetworkManager gui interface they dont get saved (no suprises there then! ).

I have tried creating a route-wlan0 file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ but this seems to be ignored by NetworkManager.

Since the NetworkManager GUI is almost useless, does anyone know if there are any other configuration files I can manually modify to get a default route set?

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Adapter Stopped Working And Fails To Start

Feb 19, 2011

I have somehow messed up my network (onboard) card in the process of configuring network settings. how I managed to do so is that I did not use ifdown before making changes to my "/etc/network/interfaces" file. Also I think it might be relevant to mention that the sshd was running -although with no active connections at that time- since I have the service installed on my 10.04 Ubuntu Server (x64). So step by step what I did to end up with no network connection:

1) sudo cp /etc/network/interfaces ~/myfiles/interfaces.original

2) chmod 444 interfaces.original

3) sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces and then applied my network settings (IP, netmask, etc.). The syntax and configuration of my "interfaces" file is without flaw since it was simple, typical and was assigning my up to then DHCP assigned IP of 192.168.2.3 to static.

At about that point and although "ifconfig" showed the changes had been applied as planned the network card stopped working. I could no longer ping anyone but myself and the leds both on my network adapter and on my switch were turned off. Since my configuration also has a Windows 7 installation I rebooted to Windows in hope of troubleshooting through device manager but I got an error code 10 which means that the adapter could not start. Did I fry my network adapter for good and for all or I still have a chance of repairing it?

PS: After a closer look I saw that the NIC's LEDs indicate that the device cannot start. I am considering to reboot my MB as a last resort since the NIC is an onboard device and changing BIOS settings has done nothing to restore it.

Fedora :: OpenOffice - Fails To Start For One User?

to resolve I did:tried other users, all works well (starting from menu, opening files in Nautilus by double-click) renamed ~/.openoffice.org to ~/.openoffice.org.bak so new prefs are created, but new attempt results the same (freeze upon start) copied ~/.openoffice.org from well-run user, but new attempt results the same (freeze upon start)

installed gnumeric as an alternative but I like to bring this to a happy ending.giving enough eyeballs the solution must be out here somewhere

I updated Fedora 12 a couple of weeks ago, and Amarok stopped working. The splash screen came up, and hung there until clicked on. I hung on for another update to see if that fixed it, but one came through today with an update to Amarok, but it is still broken.
