Ubuntu Multimedia :: High CPU Usage With ALSA?

Jun 30, 2010

OSS, even though it's emulated *through* ALSA, consumes a microscopic fraction of straight ALSA's CPU usage. For example, when I'm playing something through ALSA with XMMS2, I'm getting about 25-30% CPU usage, but with OSS output, only 2%, tops. The same applies to any other application in which I can choose the output method. And, I'm on 10.04.

Programming :: Alsa C API, Usage Of Function _snd_pcm_file_open()?

Feb 8, 2011

I had a look at the Spotify C API, and found that they were using the following code to output music from Spotify: snd_pcm_open(&h, dev, SND_PCM_STREAM_PLAYBACK, 0).

I want use this function instead: int _snd_pcm_file_open(snd_pcm_t **pcmp, const char *name, snd_config_t *root, snd_config_t *conf, snd_pcm_stream_t stream, int mode)The function is found here: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...92e16f8abdc60a I'm not able to find anything in the documentation explaining what the two parameters snd_config_t *root and snd_config_t *conf is. What I'm trying to achieve is to write the stream to a file, and then read it from another application. But it would be even better if I could get the stream returned directly from the C application.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Karmic 9.10 - RhythmBox Memory Usage Skyrockets

Apr 2, 2010

I've been using Rhythmbox for a while now and I've noticed that it begins to gobble up all the available memory - forcing me to restart it. I think I finally figured out why - Daap share and skip. All my music is on a share and when I skip through it (I have it on random and usually need to do about 5 skips before I find the next song I want to hear) Rhythmbox's memory usage skyrockets. Is this fixed in a newer version? Using Rhythmbox 0.12.5 on Karmic 9.10.

General :: Audio Output - How To Configure MPD For ALSA

Jan 30, 2010

I just got rid of pulseaudio because it breaks in so many different situations. I've switched to Alsa, and all of my sound is working except in mpd. It seems like I have to set audio_output in /etc/mpd.conf. Here is my config file:

audio_output {
type "alsa"
driver "pcm"
name "whatever"
}

When I start mpd, this is what happens:
$ sudo mpd --no-daemon --stdout --verbose
playlist: play 1:"Party Playlist/01 Block Rockin' Beats.mp3"
decoder: audio_format=44100:24:2, seekable=true
alsa: default period_time = buffer_time/4 = 371519/4 = 92879
alsa: buffer_size=16384 period_size=4096
output: opened plugin=alsa name="My MPD Alsa Output" audio_format=44100:24:2
playlist: queue song 2:"Party Playlist/01 Umbrella [Feat. Jay-Z].mp3"
output: closed plugin=alsa name="My MPD Alsa Output"
^Clisten: listen_global_finish called
db_finish took 0.000000 seconds

And I hear the song play for less than a second before the audio_output driver is closed. There really aren't any error messages printed explaining why it's not working. I've also tried "oss", "esd" and "ao" for the audio_output type, and none of them work.

Slackware :: (rhythmbox:15745): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Could Not Open Device /dev/radio0

Aug 8, 2010

we were watching Clint Eastwood in Pink Cadillac on DVD. Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.

Here's what I typically get when I first start it up (though it starts & runs OK):

Code:

sasha@reactor: rhythmbox
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
(rhythmbox:15745): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed
(rhythmbox:15745): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name

[code].....

Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.

EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff.If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.

Fedora :: How Does One Set ALSA Card Indexing

Feb 4, 2009

My situation: I have a desktop, with the following sound systems internal to it:HDA IntelSBLive! I also have a Creative Labs webcam connected via USB and another device (VR goggles) which have an audio component.My problem: a fair number of game applications use ALSA card#0 to play games, now pulse's ALSA module is at best lacking, so I don't use that for games. At this point I ahve pulse configured to always use HDA Intel for it's sink, what I would like to do is to configure it so that the SBLive! card is always ALSA card#0, regardless if the 2 USB audio-ish devices are installed. That way pulse can be running and I still get to play the games with native ALSA audio. The trick is how do I force by SBLive card to _ALWAYS_ be card#0 ?Update: there is an easy way, that I should have realized before, which allows for ALSA games to use the SBLive without having it at index 0, below is how to do it:

1) cat /proc/asound/cards
example output (mine):
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel

Fedora :: Phonon And ALSA DMix Doesn't Work (F11)?

Sep 2, 2009

I'm using F11, KDE4. I have uninstalled Pulseaudio as it's unusable for my configuration (2 souncards, one of them a M Audio Delta 66). In order to not have Phonon blocking my M Audio Delta 66 card I need to use DMix. The built in ALSA dmix support doesn't show up in Phonon (System Settings -> Multimedia -> Device Preference) but I found out after some research how to add your own dmixer in the ~/.asoundrc file. Here are a few links:

http://noneus.de/?p=50
http://ptaff.ca/ptaffgnu/2009-07/124...dmix_et_phonon
http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Setting_up_Dmix_for_ALSA
http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin#7...e_ICE1712_chip
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=474259

[Code]...

It might depend on the way it tries to access this device. When you hover the "DMixer" device it displays it will try the following devices: 1. ALSA: dmixer I think it should rather be ALSA: plug:dmixer But I can't figure out where you are able to configure this, does anyone know? I also wonder how I can remove the Pulseaudio entry in phonon. This is not important but still though PA is uninstalled. There is a Remove button but it's always disabled.
