I cannot get Rhythymbox to recognize my external cd drive when I put a cd in. It used to do so & I was able to import my cd's this way. Now it simply does not find the cd at all. I have upgraded to F13 from F12, so could this be a reason?

View 1 Replies View RelatedRhythmbox plays local m4a files no problem. I have a few upnp servers running on other machines around the house, mediatomb, tvmobili, vuze, mythtv. Rhythmbox is setup with the coherence plugin and happily plays mp3 from these servers but it cannot 'see' any m4a files via upnp, even though it can play the same files if i copy them to the machine that is running rhythmbox.

Anyway I have a cd by the Melvins (the Maggot) which they famously split each track into two tracks midway through the song. I would like to know if there is a way to rip them into "whole" tracks?

Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.
Here's what I typically get when I first start it up (though it starts & runs OK):

Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.
EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff.If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.

Any suggestions on how to fix it? I'm running a Dell XPS 410 with 4GB RAM and a 1.75 GHz processor.Also, I imported a CD and it plays fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhy are things so difficult using Linux/Ubuntu? I'm trying to rip some tracks from a CD, I've looked at various threads telling me how this might be possible. I've tried RipperX, installed it, used it, and the resultant track I was told couldn't be played because I didn't have the necessary files installed. Funny because I have quite a number of MP3's which play quite happily I tried RubyRipper, couldn't for the life in me work out how to install, never mind use it. I then switched to Windows, Googled CDex, downloaded it, installed it and ripped the three tracks in less time than it's taken me to type this. Don't get me on the subject of cropping photos in Gimp or F-Spot.

View 5 Replies View Relatedhowever I've managed to hash up the iPod database using gtkpod, as it seemed to come up with some error, which it quite often seems to do. It all semed normal unitl I ejected the device, as, upon ejection, it appears to not have any tracks or videos on, only games, however I can tell you that all the tracks are still there. The only other issue is my windows box is out of commision, and my laptop doesn't have enough space to hold 80g of music, and need the iPod soon for many presentations, which rules out sending it back to apple.

I play the music and it opens with Totem music player, but I cannot figure out for the life of me why it's streaming if it's on the disk Ubuntu is installed on. I can't skip to certain places in music or movies, and if I pause anything to go AFK for 5 seconds and press play to resume, it goes back to the beginning. Does anyone know why this is happening?
I forgot to mention that there was a codec I downloaded to try and view a SWF file in Totem and it still wouldn't play. Perhaps that's the problem? Anyone know the name of the codec so I can get rid of it?
I've been using lxdvdrip to rip a couple of DVDs that I own to my hard drive; and I usually am able to use just one command and let it do its thing, instead of waiting for all the prompts ("Select audio tracks?", "Specify burn location?", etc), using something such as 'lxdvdrip -u=a -a=2 -fv=~/film-dvd -lang=en -bp=0'. The problem is that this will only work for movies that have English audio tracks, and I have quite a few movies in other languages. There's no way to simply predict what audio tracks a movie will have, short of playing it and cycling through them all.
There doesn't seem to be an lxdvdrip option to specify a language other than German, English or French; you have to choose it manually. Is there a way -- using lxdvdrip or something else on the command line -- to list the particular properties of a DVD, specifically what audio tracks it has? Something kind of like the "exiftool" command for listing EXIF data.
I've run into something very interesting over the past several months with audio CDs and KDE 4.3.1. Background: I've got two computers running Slackware 13 --stable with Vincent Batts's KDE 4.3.1 packages. One of them is a desktop running Slackware64 and the other is a laptop running 32-bit Slackware. The two computers are running almost the same software too. I like to listen to audio books that I get from the library on my MP3 player. The vast majority of them are CD audio (as opposed to MP3 books), so the disks simply have a whole bunch of .cda tracks on them when I view them in Windows.
HOWEVER, when I view them in Dolphin or Konqueror, I get several folders offering the files in different formats. For instance, there's a folder for the individual tracks as .wav and another for .ogg files. The folder that I really like is one called something like "Full CD," which offers the whole disk in one file in four different formats. That's the one I like. I can get the whole disk in one OGG file so that an entire book is just 12 files on my Sanza. The only thing that seemed strange was that it took for freaking ever to "copy" from the CD to my hard drive.
I think I figure out what's going on! I think that Dolphin is actually calling K3B when I click on the audio CD and when I "copy" from the CD to the hard drive, it is actually encoding the .CDA files. The Problem(s)Until recently, the burn (if that's what it is) was slow on the 64-bit machine, but it worked. However, in the last week or so, it seems that the last few bytes of data to burn are taking forever (like an hour or more) to do so. I hear a strange clicking from my drive, so maybe that's the whole problem. I'm going to get a new drive and see what happens. The burn works well on my 32-bit laptop, but it doesn't recognize audio CDs when I insert them like the 64-bit desktop does. I need to open Dolphin and type 'audiocd:' in the toolbar for it to recognize the disk. Then everything works well. So: Am I understanding what's actually going on with audio CDs? Why does my desktop computer recognize audio CDs when they're inserted, but the laptop doesn't?
I'm trying to play some music with amarok. I select one track from the playlist, and then I click on PLAY and not only the track is not played, but it starts to read others mp3 folders.

But let's say I want to rip Track 16 (We Will Rock You) and Track 17 (We Are The Champions) as one track. (Because really, who ever listens to those tracks separately???)
What is the best CD ripper software to use to accomplish this? So far I've tried Asunder & Audex, but I don't want to download every ripper before I find one that will let me do this easily.

I am a Musician and thus have a quite a large collection of mp3 tracks.Having put my collection together over the years and from various sources, the artists' names differ quite a lot, thus Michael Jackson is any of the following:

Is there any way to see the list of names in a way like in Rhythmbox/ipod [so I would immediately see at least some of the differences], but at the same time having access to the tags in order to edit them [like in EasyTag]?
I've been ripping some of our CD's to .ogg and .mp3 for listening at work with a Sansa Fuze. Have used RubyRipper but lately been using Rhythmbox. The app finds titles online, and it's all pretty easy.
Some rips are louder or quieter and that's a little annoying. But the biggest problem is with tracks that blend together and the app can't figure out how to dissect them. The Eagles "Dalton" CD is a mess. Also some Don Henley tracks, Creedence Clearwater, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.
I could use RubyRipper to rip the entire CD as one file. Or use RubyRipper to rip just the troublesome tracks as one file. Or maybe screw around with the tracks in Audacity? Was hoping that some of you have better fixes.
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on a Virtualbox VM under a Windows 7 host.Sometimes Banshee won't play anything. The play button doesn't change, the progress bar doesn't start moving, and Banshee says it's idle. This doesn't always happen, sometimes I can play a few tracks fine and then suddenly in the middle of a track Banshee will stop and nothing will get it going again. Other times it happens from startup. Neither restarting the player nor rebooting the VM necessarily helps.
View 1 Replies View RelatedBanshee only recently started doing this: When I play an song it works fine but if I click on skip it plays the next song for about 1-2 seconds then Banshee just closes. Also if I just let the song play (or skip to the end of the song) it also closes within 1-2 seconds of playing the next song. If I'm half way through a song I can click on another song to play it and it works fine through.I've tried disabling all my extensions but that didn't make any difference.

So I work off and on doing live sound work and I am interested in starting to record some of the shows I work on. Naturally I only run Linux based operating systems on my computers so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good piece of hardware for recording 8-16 tracks that fully supports Linux. I have firewire and USB interfaces on my studio laptop.

I'm trying to get Totem to play VCD's. There are many complaints about this not working, but since they're all really old and dealing with different problems, it's hard to tell if this is an issue with me, or with the totem package. When I put a VCD in the computer, I expect it to pop up, (as it does) and prompt me to open the CD with Totem (which it does). When Totem tries to play it, though, it throws this error:
Code: An error occurred. Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.
Interestingly this is the same error I get when I try to play DVDs on a separate computer with the same ubuntu software. The CD plays, however. If I click ok, and go to:
Movie > Play Disk '<disk name>'
The problem is:
1) I want it to be automatic, without errors,
2) These VCD's have several tracks and after the first 30 second track, it stops. It won't play any other tracks.
I tried a few other pieces of software just to see if other things worked (as I'm looking for user friendly-ness, I doubt the others will be a final option):
VLC: (No apparent activity. Disk spins)
gxine: Autoplay input plugin 'VCD' failed: Check engine output for further details.
Mplayer: Error!: Failed to open vcd://2.
K3b seems to have no problem, but it's not really a media player...
I have several web servers running Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit server and occasionally Apache sends my load to 13 and higher.
Is there a log that actually tracks the system load levels and possibly the processes running at the time and their percentage of the load?
At the basic level what I am looking for would be a log of top but not exactly that.
How can I upload new sounds and drum tracks to LMMS. I have some in wav. format but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do it.
