Fedora :: Change Lib Symlink Everytime Restart F14?
Feb 19, 2011
Because I am working with some 3d software, and to be able to start it I need to symlink libGL.so.1 and libGL.so.1.2 from /usr/lib64/ to libGL.so.1 and libGL.so.1.2 from /usr/lib64/catalyst/ folder. I move existing libs to new names by adding .bak at the end of file name.
But everytime I restart machine soemthing changes libGL.so.1 linking from libGL.so.1.2 (in catalyst folder) to libGL.so.1.2.bak (in usr/lib64/ folder), original file. And I can not start 3d software. Can I stop that from happening somehow? Why is that happening at all?

I have a server with my music on it. There is a network share where all my machines can access that music. In the past I have created a link inside the Music folder of each user/machine which links to the Samba share. I have been doing this by linking to /home/[username]/.gvfs/share on server.
In 8.10 I am able to drag and drop to create the necessary link from Music to share on server. With maybe 9.10 I lost the ability to drag and drop the link and had to resort to the command line ( ln -s "/home/[username]/.gvfs/share on server" /home/[username]/Music ). With 10.10 I don't seem to be able to create this link using any method. (Any link which is created is linked to / .) (After 8.10 admin rights are required to create the link from ~/.gvfs/whatever.) This method is very handy as all of the machines and users point to the exact same location for their music (~/Music/share) and if I can't create that link this system of organization fails.

I have a directory containing files and symlinks to files elswhere. I make a copy of the directory like this:
cp -rp dir/* new_dir
The files in new_dir have their original timestamps, but the symlinks have the current time. touch -t does not operate on the symblink but on the files they reference. Is there a way to set the timestamp of the symlink to a time in the past?

I'm still fighting to migrate my Evolution email from F13 to F15. My unsuccessful attempt at data conversion (from Ver 2.32/mbox to Ver 3.2/maildir) is documented here: [URL] As a last resort I decided to try installing evolution 2.32.2-1 in F15. The process went fairly smoothly once I figured out that evolution-data-server-2.32.2-1 must be installed first. Installing the data server package first eliminated all but 1 dependency problem in the main package installation. That 1 remaining dependency is where I?m stuck.

Why it need to sync the repos database every time? Fedora is not a rolling release distro, so the packages don't change so often.. only with minor updates..For example: I have absolute certainty that emesene-1.6 is the same for the last 12 months, and I want to install it quickly.. what can I do to circumvent yum's obsession with repo syncing?

I'm using KDE. I installed codecs for playing songs today, and tried to play a song using amarok. It didn't work, rather flooded my tool bar and the system hanged and I rebooted. It was fine before, but after I rebooted, a new problem raised.
Every time I close any window, something changes, and the windows lose their title bars (minimizing, maximizing, closing option), and neither it can be closed from the tool bar (bottom) panel, nor can be moved. The Kickoff Application launcher is also not working. Every time i close a window, I got to log out and re log in. I tried to change in the System Settings>Appearance but nothing works, and even when I close that window, the same happens.

I support an application that runs on RHEL 5.X and uses multipath to access a SAN. A Bare Metal Restore backup is done using Storix which needs to write directly to a /dev/sd* device, or at least what you configure it to use.The problem is if the USB drive is plugged in when the system is booted it can be identified as /dev/sdb and the the SAN LUNs are /dev/sdc and up. If the configuration file is then set up to use /dev/sdb and then later the system is booted with the USB drive not plugged in the SAN LUNs use /dev/sdb and up, which is fine because multipathd handles that. But when the USB drive is plugged in and becomes say /dev/sdx and the Storix configuration file is not changed, the Storix backup will still use /dev/sdb and corrupt what is there on the SAN.
I assume a udev rule could be used to make the USB drive appear as the same name, maybe /dev/storixI am looking for some good pointers to how to do this with udev or what ever. The application will soon be running on RHEL 6.X also, so hopefully what ever solution someone points me to will still work on it as well

First of all, this is not a rhythmbox issue, but a pulseaudio one. Everytime I click on next song (in rhythmbox or amarok), the master volume drops about 25 percent. Once the volume goes to 0, the volume cannot be modified without going into sound preferences and unmuting the volume for the application. This is *very* annoying. Basically, it means that everytime I click on next song, I need to follow that with 2 or 3 hits of up volume.

Whenever I start my PC, the information of 'First Boot device' in BIOS changes from hard disk to CD-Rom. It happens with new start, I mean, if I restart my computer after resetting First boot device to hard disk, then priority does not change. Just as I switch on computer, a black screen appears with the message:
CMOS - checksum error - defaults loaded
press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup
Recently it used to happen, that PC was not reading my hard disk containing GRUB. I have 2 hard disks. I switched the power cables of two hard disks. After that, both hard disks were shown by BIOS but the above mentioned error started appearing. Also grub takes too much time to load. It takes almost 20 seconds. Earlier I was using 'Puppy Linux'. In that, Grub was loading in fraction of second.

Had to restart following an extract crash, and upon restarting, much of my theme, including all my icons had changed. Prior to this I was using the Awoken Icon Set. I've gone through and rerun the Awoken Customization script, but no luck. Simply trying to change my theme, and icons in the theme manager doesn't work either.

I installed openSUSE on my notebook with an usb drive using openSUSE 11.4 KDE LIVE iso. The installation process set the name to "linux-ygrl" which I don't really like. (I probably just missed the setting during the installation.). I tried to change it through YaST -> Network -> Hostnames and I set everything where needed to the new name and restarted but the changed weren't applied. I searched the web and found out about the /etc/HOSTNAME file which still contains "linux-ygrl". Now I could change it manually but I was wondering if there is a GUI for it? (I mean, openSUSE has for alsmost everything a GUI.

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

how to undo this?
"Simply change the symlink so that it points to /bin/bash. To do this, open a terminal, and type the following:
sudo rm -f /bin/sh
sudo ln -s /bin/bash /bin/sh
From now on your scripts should work as their authors expected."

In my MIDI music collection, I have a "best" folder with duplicate copies of only my favorite files. Recently I thought, why waste memory with duplicates--can't I just put symlinks in the "best" folder? So I tried to, in Konqueror. It would only let me make the symlinks from the Konqueror superuser account.

I'm trying to move a file from a directory to another one and create a symlink but seem to be doing something wrong. Have done "man ln" and looked up info in coreutils but I don't seem to be able to get it right. There are two files in ./home/jim/.config/banshee-1/ that I want to move to ./home/jim/Dropbox/banshee. I have created backups of both and created the new folder in Dropbox. see attached screen shots. I then run
Code: jim@saturn ~ $ sudo ln - ./home/jim/Dropbox/banshee/banshee.db ./home/jim/.config/banshee-1/banshee.db
ln: creating symbolic link `./home/jim/.config/banshee-1/banshee.db': No such file or directory and get the above error message. Now I know symlinks do not need to be complete at the time of creation, but I'm not sure if I have done this right or not and if I try and read and write banshee.db at the original location if it will do it properly and efficiently. Is this a case where I should do a hardlink instead and have both files. If I want to do this every time at start up, how do I automate the commands once I have them right?
