My home directory's permissions allow only myself access to it. Is it possible to put a file inside my home directory with.. say.. full permissions, and create a symlink to it so other users can access that file alone inside my home folder? System is Ubuntu Karmic.

If I have a directory /foo with a few files in it, how do I symlink each entry in /foo into /bar/? For instance, if /foo has the files a, b and c, I want to create three symlinks:
/bar/a -> /foo/a
/bar/b -> /foo/b
/bar/c -> /foo/c

I've had Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my desktop since it's release. Up until an hour ago, it was working fine. I clicked on an update from the update manager, now booting into a graphical mode is completely broken, (the start-up load hangs at 'Check Battery State ... [0k]'). I restarted my computer, and booted into safe mode, and launched the terminal. This all works fine. I then typed :
Code: sudo gdm start into the command prompt, hoping that I would be able to start things manually. Instead, it spat out this: Code:
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'. No such file or directory.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to find users : no seat-id found.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Gdm Display: display lasted 0.070467 seconds
The last line was printed about 8 times, with slightly different times, before it gave up and failed. Some information which might help, I have Gnome 2, Unity and KDE (not sure which version), installed. My graphics card is the GTX 275, and I have driver the Nvidia driver 275.21. So yeah, I think the update has gone and moved custom.conf somewhere, but I have no idea on how to fix it. I have a graphics programming assignment due on Friday and I would be eternally grateful if I could get this fixed well before then.

There is a symlink from /var/www to a personal directory. FollowSymlink and chmod 755 are all set. It works perfectly until each morning I will get a "Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible" error. When I do a "sudo service apache2 restart", the problem will go away.

In Ubuntu 9.10, sudo was working properly except it would not let me run speedy as sudo. I would get an error message, which I believe stated "No such file or directory. However, I could run the command as my regular user (being prompted it needed escalated privileges), and I could run the user as root. So I tried to "fix" it so that I could run it via the sudo command. My fix, in turn, ended up breaking sudo. I edited a file which contained the directories for PATH (I made a backup of said file), and that didn't work. It further broke sudo. So I attempted to restore the backup file, however, sudo was still just as broken.
Now, whenever I try to execute any command with sudo I get:
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo -i
[sudo] password for tim:
env: -i: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo gedit
env: gedit: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo apt-get update
env: apt-get: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo nautilus
env: nautilus: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo update-manager
env: update-manager: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo speedy deploy
env: speedy: No such file or directory
I have since upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3, with mild hopes that the upgrade would remedy my problem, but alas - it did not. How to get sudo back to a working condition?

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message
error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.

You may know the Humble Indie Pack 2, which is a set of crossplatform indie video games. There's one game in the bundle that doesn't offer a 64bit build and therefore it fails to load. It's called Braid and that's what you get when you try to run it: $ ./braid ./braid: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Of course the 64bit libs for OpenGL and the propitiatory nvidia drivers are installed, but the game asks for the 32bit ones, at least to my understanding. I do know that why can install 32bit libraries on a 64 bit linux system (we do that for the sake of crappy Adobe Flash), but I don't know where to find these libs (searching the repo with keywords like .i586 or ia32 led me nowhere).

After boot, Fedora 14 gives the following message, on my HP Pavilion dv2701tx laptop.
Starting udev: udevd-work[454]: error opening ATTR{/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.1/usb4/4-1/4-1:1.0/power/level} for writing: No such file or directory
I suspect it has something to do with my Authentec AES2501 fingerprint reader. I need it to work for my project, but it's not working, even though it works fine in the Windows 7 installed on my system.

if it is possible to copy and paste as a symlink.
It seems to me that the only way to create a shortcut or symlink is through the command line. I use KDE.
This was one of the most basic things Windows could do since Windows 95, and is one of the simplest shortcuts I dearly miss since leaving Windows.

I have a CMS I have developed, which will run on several sites all hosted in sub directories on my dedicated server. I want to create symlinks for the main files of the CMS, including all config files, functions and admin sections. Then there will be a few files specific to each site.I read some tutorials on creating symlinks, although most are not very good in my opinion.
Do you have to create a symlink for every file I want to include? Or can I just create a symlink to a directory? For example:CMS is located at /www/cms/.Can I make www/domain1/ point to that directory, and if so, will all files include themselves correctly. I think I am a bit confused on how this works.

I get an error when running slapt-get. The error is: "slapt-get: error while loading shared libraries: libsas.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory".
I've booted the Slackware disk # 1 and unchecked everything except the libraries category and installed them. I rebooted and it still says this. I get this same error before I put the disk in and rebooted to install ALL libraries. I really need help. BTW, I can't load KDE.I found a pkg manager already installed called "slackpkg". But I really need help on this library issue!! I uninstalled it (slapt-get) anyway, so forget that!

I am new to Linux and I wanted to setup a dedicated game server on my notebook.
I've installed Ubuntu 9.04. I than created a directory named /home/phlex/kfserver. I downloaded the application binary from Steam. I changed the file permission with chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin and now the file attributes are -rwxr-xr-x.
The problem is when I try to run the binary file. If I type ./hldsupdatetool.bin I get an error message "-bash: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: No such file or directory. It seems the OS can't find the file. I've downloaded the file several times thinking it may have been corrupt but it's not. I can delete the file, I can rename it and so the file is there. Sometimes Linux can be aggravating to use.

I have a server with Fedora 13 with which I would like to get NFS working. I have looked up multiple howto's and tutorials, but I'm having a problem not addressed by any of them.Official how-to, another how-to, and another how-to.I have verified that nfs-utils, nfs-utils-lib, portmap, and system-config-nfs are installed and running. I have verified that I have, in fact, shared the directory that I want to share, and that the proper permissions are set.
I had to go through some gyrations to get the Belkin wireless N router to allow my server to have a static IP. However, I can ping the server from the nfs client (a toshiba satellite running mint 8), and vice versa. I have (for now) disabled firewalls on both computers. I think I have disabled SELinux on Fedora 13 (for now).When I attempt to connect to the server from the client, the output looks like this:Quote:
aragorn ~ # mount -v 192.168.2.101:/test /home/kelev/test/
mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon
mount.nfs: timeout set for Sat Dec 18 12:21:09 2010

Got these messages in syslog:
Code:
Jan 26 15:24:58 marconi named[28544]: starting BIND 9.6.1-P2 -u bind
Jan 26 15:24:58 marconi named[28544]: built with '--prefix=/usr' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--infodir=/usr/share/info' '--sysconfdir=/etc/bind' '--localstatedir=/var' '--enable-threads' '--enable-largefile' '--with-libtool'
[Code]....
This is BIND 9.6.1-P2 running on Ubuntu Server 9.10. When I move all the files from /var/bind into /etc/bind (replacing the symlink that was at /etc/bind), and change all instances of "/var" to "/etc", then it works. It seems to be the symlink that is doing it. Yet I need to get this moved over to "/var" and the Ubuntu packagers built it to use "/etc/bind".
Also, when I su to user "bind" and run "md5sum /etc/bind/named.conf" (with the symlink in place) it is able to read it just fine. Other users can read it just find. It's the "/usr/sbin/named" program that can't.
