View 9 Replies View RelatedI just did a clean install and started with the software installation. After I installed dropbox, a window popped up asking me for administrator's password....I put in my user password and it said wrong password (i just now remembered not adding myself to administrator's group while creating my user...ouch!) after which a notficiation came and went too fast for me to read it properly....it said something like unable to set user /etc/x something something.....I know it sounds completely vague but that is all I could before it disappeared.
Now, nautilus won't open unless I click on the dropbox icon below in the taskbar.I guess I can manage for a while but I'm hoping to find a solution to the problem.
Whatever I use, synaptic, update manager, apt-get it insists on upgrading GDM The upgrade just 'hangs' on the upgrade with'unpacking replacement gdm' message All 3 still try and upgrade gdm (why does it do this even when I do not want to upgrade/update) ?I've had this problem for nearly 3 days now and i am stuck can't do any package install my system is basically 'stuck' in no update/install mode until i solve this The gdm is: /var/cache/apt/archives/gdm_2.30.5-0ubuntu4.1_i386.deb even if i get a new copy from ANY repo it still has this problem, any solution, anyone come accross this yet?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI install fedora on my usb-hdd. Sometimes i boot it from real machine, sometimes i boot from virtual machine (kvm). When I boot from real machine, hdd driver is usb-storage, when i boot from virtual machine hdd drivers are ata_generic and pata_acpi.
Everytime i update kernel, mkinitrd only create initrd image contains only hdd driver current running, and I must recreate initrd manual with all preload hdd driver. How to config fedora to everytime update kernel, mkinitrd can make initrd image with all hdd driver I need?
I just did 'yum update' on my system and got a number of errors such as this one:

Why it need to sync the repos database every time? Fedora is not a rolling release distro, so the packages don't change so often.. only with minor updates..For example: I have absolute certainty that emesene-1.6 is the same for the last 12 months, and I want to install it quickly.. what can I do to circumvent yum's obsession with repo syncing?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have used ubuntu 8.04 in a dual boot system together with windows xp and wanted to upgrade to ubuntu 10.04.
Since the upgrade did not work (the usr partition was to small and I couldn't make it big enough) I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386 edition and tried to install it.
Everything worked find during the installation process but when I tried to start ubuntu I could only see the ubuntu desktop for a second and then the computer began to reboot.
Then I thought that I can solve this problem by installing ubuntu 8.04.4 again and trying to upgrade to ubuntu 10.04.
After the installation I could start ubuntu 8.04.4 without problems but after upgrading to ubuntu 10.04 the same problem occurs again: ubuntu 10.04 causes the computer to reboot every time I try to start ubuntu.
ubuntu with windows xp on my laptop. My problem is everytime I out of ubuntu, the vga driver seems to disappear. I can't start x server, and when go into windows xp, the screen is on very low resolution state. After go into win xp and reboot, I can boot either ubuntu or winxp normally, everything is okey again. In summary:- When go into XP and reboot, I can boot ubuntu and XP normally.- When go into ubuntu and reboot, I can only boot with very low resolution in XP and can not start x server if boot ubuntu

I tried using threads which tell that it is selinux which does not give permissions for the install. Trying to block selinux during the installation has not worked out. Is there a way to get it going it is something I do need every day?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using KDE. I installed codecs for playing songs today, and tried to play a song using amarok. It didn't work, rather flooded my tool bar and the system hanged and I rebooted. It was fine before, but after I rebooted, a new problem raised.
Every time I close any window, something changes, and the windows lose their title bars (minimizing, maximizing, closing option), and neither it can be closed from the tool bar (bottom) panel, nor can be moved. The Kickoff Application launcher is also not working. Every time i close a window, I got to log out and re log in. I tried to change in the System Settings>Appearance but nothing works, and even when I close that window, the same happens.
Because I am working with some 3d software, and to be able to start it I need to symlink libGL.so.1 and libGL.so.1.2 from /usr/lib64/ to libGL.so.1 and libGL.so.1.2 from /usr/lib64/catalyst/ folder. I move existing libs to new names by adding .bak at the end of file name.
But everytime I restart machine soemthing changes libGL.so.1 linking from libGL.so.1.2 (in catalyst folder) to libGL.so.1.2.bak (in usr/lib64/ folder), original file. And I can not start 3d software. Can I stop that from happening somehow? Why is that happening at all?
I support an application that runs on RHEL 5.X and uses multipath to access a SAN. A Bare Metal Restore backup is done using Storix which needs to write directly to a /dev/sd* device, or at least what you configure it to use.The problem is if the USB drive is plugged in when the system is booted it can be identified as /dev/sdb and the the SAN LUNs are /dev/sdc and up. If the configuration file is then set up to use /dev/sdb and then later the system is booted with the USB drive not plugged in the SAN LUNs use /dev/sdb and up, which is fine because multipathd handles that. But when the USB drive is plugged in and becomes say /dev/sdx and the Storix configuration file is not changed, the Storix backup will still use /dev/sdb and corrupt what is there on the SAN.
I assume a udev rule could be used to make the USB drive appear as the same name, maybe /dev/storixI am looking for some good pointers to how to do this with udev or what ever. The application will soon be running on RHEL 6.X also, so hopefully what ever solution someone points me to will still work on it as well

but I got stuck (console freeze) and I had to reboot hoping to sort out somehow...
After reboot I try to apt-get again but I got the following message (my traslation)

It's necessary to do "sudo dpkg --configure -a" for correcting the problem
So I went in the console again for that command and I get

I have a dual boot system with Lucid Lynx and a Windows 7 that came with the laptop (it's a Dell Studio with an i3 processor).
Grub2 boots into Win7 and Ubuntu just fine. The thing is that if I choose Win7, next time Grub doesn't show up. I can't boot anything and the screen turns black. I can reinstall grub2 with Ubuntu's live CD and the cycle starts all over again, it's very annoying.
These facts may or may not be important: I think that this started happening when I uninstalled wubi after being able to install ubuntu through another method When reinstalling grub there's an error that repeats through many lines of the terminal (I can't remember what it says, if you think it's important I can check). Anyway, it ends up saying the installation finished successfully.
Using 11.04. Every time I install a program (any source - software center, Update manager ) at the end of the installation message it says operation failed. But ... here is the big but. The software gets installed.

I'm trying to install DropBox so that the 'DropBox' folder gets placed in /dev/sda4 which is a spare ext4 partition on my disk. Root is /dev/sda1, swap is /dev/sda2 and home is /dev/sda3.
The DropBox installer does not show /dev/sda4 as a location to install it to in the 'Location' drop-down selector.
In Dolphin, the /dev/sda4 partition appears as '19.7 Gib Hard Drive'.
Do I need to do something to make /dev/sda4 accessible to the DropBox installer?
I recently upgraded to 10.04 and during the upgrade process my external hard disk was plugged in. Now everytime I boot up ubuntu informs me that sdb1 is missing and wont boot up till I ask it to "skip" waiting for it. Also I am assuming because of this I have trouble mounting any other external hard disk other than my own, keeps giving some sort of unable to mount problem

Has anyone here had any luck setting up some sort of automated backup solution using Amazon Cloud Drive? I've been all over their site, but I just don't see any other way to access the cloud drive other then via their web interface.
Optimally, I am looking for a solution that will allow me to simply set up an rsync script or similar that would sync up a folder to a cloud drive every few days. Maybe their S3 tools can be used to do this?
Using lucid LTS, I have no problem installing dropbox using either the website download .deb, or adding it to my repositories.
The problem comes when I try and run the software. At this point it unsuccessfully tries to download the required proprietary daemon.
In the terminal, running:
'sudo dropbox start -i'

View 5 Replies View RelatedFirst of all, this is not a rhythmbox issue, but a pulseaudio one. Everytime I click on next song (in rhythmbox or amarok), the master volume drops about 25 percent. Once the volume goes to 0, the volume cannot be modified without going into sound preferences and unmuting the volume for the application. This is *very* annoying. Basically, it means that everytime I click on next song, I need to follow that with 2 or 3 hits of up volume.

I have just installed mythbuntu and my drivers for the tv card are in a compressed .rar folder. I have installed rar and unrar from the synaptic repository. Still when I click on it, it has no program associated with rar files. When I search the drop down menu for applications I can't find it there either. What can I do?
