Fedora :: Cannot Choose Wich Operation System To Log Into?

Jun 19, 2010

user that started using Ubunto 6 month ago and I have now also installed fedora 13 to see wich operation system I like best... I have 3 primary partitions 1 for windows 1 for fedora and 1 for ubuntohen I installed ubunto I had a LILO (linux loader) like program that made me choose between Ubunto and Windows at start up... after installing fedora it goes automaticaly to fedora w/o making me choose... I can still mount my win/ubunto partitions so I haven't messed up compleatly... how do I "restablish" the linux loader deamon so that I can choose freely between the 3 operation systems?

second... when I installed linux stupid windows killed my backup hard drive where there are a lot of valuable resarch data... so now I have a 6 gb "unalocated" partition that I would love to be able to recover.... I would appriciate if somone had the answers to my guestions... so fare I like fedora because it seems better organised than ubuntu though the difference between the two linux distrubitons are hardly notacable

General :: What File System To Choose

Jul 12, 2010

I'm still to install Linux (waiting for a replacement of a bad DIMM) on my new box. It will probably be CentOS, following 'Rubberman's recommendation in forum/coffee-lounge/166195-distro-recommendation-development-use.html .

I assume (as I haven't installed Linux before) there could be a choice of file systems. Is there any recommendation on what I should/could use ?

Ubuntu :: System Crashed During A Gparted Operation?

Dec 12, 2010

Is running fsck -f sufficient to ensure my data is OK? Heres what's happenedy system crashed during a gparted operation. I was pretty sure however, that the data was OK since given the size of the drive and the amount of data and were it was when it crashed, I figured the crash occurred while moving empty space.Bottom line is I think the data is OK, but I am wondering what else I can do to check it.When I first ran fsck after re-booting the system it said it was clean. I then did fsck -f and it found and fixed errors in phase 5 (group summary). Now when I run fsck -f I think it's clean?fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)

OpenSUSE :: How To Choose System Default Font

Jul 25, 2010

I'm using openSUSE 11.3 Ever since I started using Linux, I have had problems with Korean fonts. Now I think I am close to the solution. I want to know how openSUSE decide which fonts to use as the system default fonts.I know that I can change them in the Appearance -> Font dialog. But my questios is if those settings were just set as Sans (the default), how openSUSE choose what is Sans?I'm asking this because I found that if I copy Arial and consolas fonts into my ~/.fonts folder, then openSUSE uses them as the system defaults fonts. I don't know if this is correct behavior, but to me it seems very strange, and some applications such as Opera uses whichever fonts openSUSE uses as system default to render webpages, so I ended up having Arial for all my webpages open in Opera. So my questions are:1) How openSUSE decide which font to use as system defaults?2) Are font files in ~/.fonts folder supposedly regarded as defaults?3) Where are the setting files I can edit?

Software :: Drive Changes To Read Only File System During An Operation?

Jun 4, 2011

I have Ubuntu installed in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) with a separate virtual drive that receives rsync backups of some of my online servers.Itns a series of 4 rsync commands. The first two ran fine, not sure about the third and the fourth wrote nothing. The error in rsync said the file system was read only. I confirmed the whole drive was read only, but it did not start that way.I rebooted and the fourth rsync ran fine. I think this is a linux issue and not a VM issue, but it is clearly mounting in r-w and for some reason changed on it own to read only.Does anyone have any idea why this might occur? It is mounted through fstab with the line:UUID=84d4bc5c-7a68-4096-9725-214f2e8b713e /BackupDrive ext3 defaults 0 2

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Get To The Screen That Allows To Choose An Operating System

Dec 2, 2010

I recently upgraded to the newest version of Ubuntu. I dual boot with Windows 7.

All was going fine the first few times I used my system after the upgrade but I have now run into a serious problem. I'm not that technical so will explain this as best i can.

Basically, when I switch my computer on, I can not get to the screen that allows me to choose an operating system. Before it gets there it just restarts.

I guess its a problem with the GNU GRUB software. It just seems like the computer can't find it and restarts itself. So I can't get into either Ubuntu or Windows at the moment.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Choose System Sound - Login Windows

May 21, 2010

I am having a problem with my Lucid L. I installed Mac4Lin and when trying to change login window, grub window, splash screen, or even system sounds, I simply don't have the option.

I go to the application like System-Preferences-Sounds and simply don't have the option to change the system sounds, all I have is 5 tabs without that option.

Login widows is the same thing, I can only choose if I want a login sound or not and that's all, I can't even choose to make auto login since it does not give a user as option.

I tryed also with art manager, but the "Install" button is greyed, and startupmanager does not give me any of those options too.

Fedora Installation :: Should Choose LVM Or The Classical Partitioning

Feb 6, 2009

I need to upgrade a machine to F10 (64-bit), and I need to make a decision on whether to start using LVM or stick with the classical partitioning mode. I have used RedHat/Fedora for quite some time, and always used the standard partitions. Fedora documentation says that LVM (Logical Volume Management) partitions provide a number of advantages over standard partitions. Also, numerous contributors on these forums seem to favor LVMs. In order to make an educated decision I need answers to some questions:

1. What are these advantages that Fedora documentation refers to?
2. Is it easier to work with LVMs than with classic partitions?
3. For those of you who have experienced working with LVM partitions, what were the advantages/disadvantages to working with LVM partitions?

Fedora :: SELinux Has Prevented Wine From Performing An Unsafe Memory Operation

Nov 9, 2010

I have installed Wine on my Fedora 14 and got Security alert.SELinux has prevented wine from performing an unsafe memory operation.SELinux denied an operation requested by wine-preloader, a program used to run Windows applications under Linux. This program is known to use an unsafe operation on system memory but so are a number of malware/exploit programs which masquerade as wine. If you were attempting to run a Windows program your only choices are to allow this operation and reduce your system security against such malware or to refrain from running Windows applications under Linux. If you were not attempting to run a Windows application this indicates you are likely being attacked by some for of malware or program trying to exploit your system for nefarious purposes. My concern is if i hide this attempt, it will not stop wine to from trying to do it, only hide security alerts. This alert is occurred already nearly 5000 times in last 30 min and counting. Wine server is using 10% CPU on this, so only to hide alerts is not a solution, isn't it?
