General :: Access Or Format On Doing Operation On Volgroupharddisk On Fedora 13?
Feb 26, 2011
I had only Fedora 13 on my Dell Inspiron 1545. I found that there is a harddisk named volgroup in my computer & one another disk on which Linux is installed. The problem is that I can't access that space of my harddisk. It cannot be mounted.
My old computer came with two disks, with Windows XP on one. I installed Fredora on the other. I also resized the c: partition on the first disk and added a second partition which I formatted as fat32. I then mounted that partition with its entry in /etc/fstab such that I could write to it as myself.
I have a new computer, 64 bit and running Windows 7, which I want to organize roughly the same way. I will install Fedora 14 on its seond disk. I've shrunk the c: partition under Windows using Disk Management. I want to create a 100 Gb D: partition on the same drive in the remaining space, and I want to be able to access both c: and D: for reading and writing by root and I want to be able to access the d: drive for reading and writing also by myself. Since it is a 64 bit machine, my choices for formatting the d: drive are HTFS or exFAT. Does it matter which I choose so that I can do what I want? How does Fedora treat exFAT?
Can anyone remind me which packages I need to add in order to be able to read NTFS file systems from Fedora? Can I also write to such a file system as root?
Can I write to such a file system as myself if I mount it properly?
I'm looking to set up a server with attached mass storage device and tape autoloader to run linux. It's set up under Windows at the moment. Goal is to have users, connecting from individual workstations and laptops, backup their data to the linux server. On their personal machine, some users run linux, some MacOS, some Windows. I plan to set up the 5 500 GB drives as RAID5. I understand that if setting up as software raid the format is "physical volume for RAID". Under this setup, will Windows users be able to read/write and function as expected? I can't assume only linux user access.
my school we want to print a magazine but we have problem with the format of the files. We need to create a sheet in A3 format from two sheets in A4 format. I was reading about the pdftk library but it doesn't do what i need.
just wondering is there a simple script to convert datetime to UTC format. I have been searching different forums but most answers are for converting UTC to datetime. For example what is a simple command/script to convert todays datetime to UTC format i.e. '2009-10-09 11:47:59'.
I need some assistance in trying to format a USB hard drive to vfat format but can't seem to do so. I am currently using RHEL 5.3. I have tried the following commands and they all come back as "command not found"
I converted one of my old iPod touches into a external harddrive, and i wouldnt mind a small tuorial on how to format my Ipod(USB) to FAT32? I'm on a netbook, and i want to delete Fedora and install BAckTrack instead. and without a CD/DVD drive or really much free money, i gotta use my iPod to do this.
So I currently have an issue with the 10.10 (64-bit) installer in that it does not recognized the Crucial SSD drive I have installed on my box correctly (long story and ultimately a separate topic but if anyone is interested). Initially I thought it was an issue with the hardware and RMA'd the drive however now realize that the likely culprit is the Ubuntu installer itself.
In order to test the rest of the hardware while waiting for the RMA'd drive I installed Ubuntu on a separate partition on the box and thus have a working secondary partition that I can boot from. From within Ubuntu it seems I am able to access/format the SSD correctly (using gparted); it seems that it is only the installer that cannot handle the drive...
Is there a way that I can install Ubuntu on a second partition from within Ubuntu itself?
I have installed Fedora 10 in my laptop. After installation in Fedora 10, im not able to use Touchpad to perform a task like to open a folder/open a window/select a word. I am doing above mentioned operations through left button/right button.
I have many years of experience with DOS and Windows, but this is my first dabble in Linux, in particular Fedora 13. The OS is great, but my lack of knowledge makes me uneasy. Is there a good book available in HTML or PDF format that covers. The basics, and is relevant to Fedora 13?
After I set to use some modules, say, pam_access.so, I want to know if there is a way for the administrator to check if any invalid attempt was happened and blocked by that module?
I am using reliance zte modem ac2726.i inserted the modem in my laptop and tried wvdialconf command and it was working.but when i type
Code:
modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0xfffd
command it shows the following error message
Code:

user that started using Ubunto 6 month ago and I have now also installed fedora 13 to see wich operation system I like best... I have 3 primary partitions 1 for windows 1 for fedora and 1 for ubuntohen I installed ubunto I had a LILO (linux loader) like program that made me choose between Ubunto and Windows at start up... after installing fedora it goes automaticaly to fedora w/o making me choose... I can still mount my win/ubunto partitions so I haven't messed up compleatly... how do I "restablish" the linux loader deamon so that I can choose freely between the 3 operation systems?
second... when I installed linux stupid windows killed my backup hard drive where there are a lot of valuable resarch data... so now I have a 6 gb "unalocated" partition that I would love to be able to recover.... I would appriciate if somone had the answers to my guestions... so fare I like fedora because it seems better organised than ubuntu though the difference between the two linux distrubitons are hardly notacable
I was messing around with my drive trying some different arrangements of partition to get another one inside. overall the result doesn't differ much from the original but while messing with it I done a lot of steps. I thought GParted will do the minimal number of operations but it didn't. it just traced all my operations one by one. this gave it a few days worth of work. As I don't want to loose data I can't hit cancel but I don't want to wait few days for it. Is there any way to tell it to stop after completing the current operation? It's from natty ubuntu live cd.
I run SUSE on my machine for a year, but I'm really a newbie on Linux. In the system monitor it states:SUSE LINUX Release 11.2 Kernel Linux 2.6.31.5 -0.1 -desktop GNOME 2.28.0Last week when I rebooted my machine, I suddenly found my machine had no response to any click or typing. When the cursor move to any icons, they can be highlighted, but when I click them, no response at all. The weird thing is almost every time after I reboot the computer, it can work for a few minutes, then stop working. But if I press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, it can be log out.
I think there must be something wrong with my GNOME, 'cause everything seems working fine when I login IceWM. recover the .config file in my home directory. But I don't have this file in my home directory.
I'm using fedora 11. I want to do some operation like after saving a file (moving ,copying,..) the system need to ask that "DO you want to encrypt?" . If yes I am able to run the crypt module (which I already implemented..). Is it possible to invoke a encrypt module which I implemented in c language.
What happen internally when we insert the floppy into the linux operating system? Who will take care of making the entry in the /etc/mtab, etc. Tell me whole internal operation of the kernel when we insert the floppy.
I am having a problem when I try to login as su.I type the command SU and then the password as normal and I get su: cannot set groups: Operation not permitted I am not sure what could of caused this error and how to fix it.
After my battery died for my netbook and the computer was shutdown compulsorily, then after rebooting I don't have network any more. Then I tried to restart network service which gives me the following errors
Quote:
RTNETLINK answers: Operation not possible due to RF-Kill RTNETLINK answers: Network is down RTNETLINK answers: File exists
For both loopback and eth0 interface. What should I do to rectify the problem because I am stucked; and I am running fedora FC13 (recently installed yesterday).
My USB ntfs external hard drive mounts fine when I plug it in and I can often copy files with no problems. However, I have some large folders on my machine (~10 GB with ~ 200,000 files) which begin to copy to the external drive but then stop with the error "Unsupportes operation while copying <filename>." The file currently being copied when this happens appears to be random. Does anyone know what the issue is and/or how to fix it?

Older article of the same problem, but it did not help me: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-696982-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-.html
I have looked on google at great lengths to try to find a solution. It seems that my kernel configuration is missing something? My system/kernel is: 2.6.36-gentoo-r5 #3 SMP Thu Jan 13 10:49:06 EST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3220 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux.I am posting this on SuperUser since this system is used as a workstation and this problem is unrelated to specific tasks that are handled exclusively by servers.iproute2 is installed:
I'm writing a script based on dialog and one of it's functions is to perform a restore with dd, of which I would like to show the progress by means of the "gauge" option of the "dialog" utility. I wanted to do this by sending a USR1 signal from time to time to the dd PID, because this results into the amount of bytes already being dd-ed ont the console screen. A simple calculation based on the orginal size would result into a percentage that can be fed to the gauge function of dialog.
The challenge I'm facing now is to launch an external script (I guess with "&" to send it to the background) that sends, let's say every 5 seconds a USR1 signal to the dd PID. That would be no problem, but how do I capture the output of this "kill -USR1" to the original script? I tested this and the output is not sent to standard ouput, so it must be that it is sent to standard error. For now I don't see a way out.
We often require to find an equivalent text command for any GUI operation. Just as an example we click on a folder (say ABC) from the current directory in order to see the contents of that directory. The equivalent command for it to happen would be->
Code: cd ABC ls Now the thing is that we often don't know what that equivalent command will be. So I want to know that is there any way out to find it. What I want to do is that I shall perform any operation using mouse in the GUI mode(whatever operation it could be) and then I can see a log file to see what I actually did last(rather what the command would have been if I have worked in the text mode)...
When I first received it (used) a few weeks ago, this only happened occasionally and it took a while for a pattern to develop. The 7 hr stretch was listening to music of WCPE.org, but the next day I only could get minutes from the same site It sems to get progressively worse, yet the outside of the case, near the fan or anywhere else, doesln't get uncomfortably warm. I had another unit from the same vendor. He took that back and sent this one after a 24'hour test, but will not answer further communication. Generally I get best results if it has sat shut down overnight, but this morning even that was good for only a few minutes. It does this running XP from the hard disk or Linux from CD. Actually I would like to split the hard disk and put Linux on the second half as the default boot. But it won't run long enough to install anything now!
I installed pyxattr to play around with, and when I try to set them it says that the operation is not supported. Does Arch Linux not support xattr, or how do I enable them?
Here's the deal: I had a nice little fileserver running under 2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.x86_64.
3 disks in raid 5 ext4fs, then I thought..."hey I'm a greedy bastard..I want another drive!!
So I get it..do a normal mdadm --grow...after around 1100 minutes .. FINISHED!..whee..happy...
I decide to do a upgrade to 2.6.29.2-52.fc10.x86_64 to get the fix for growing the ext4..
reboot...
