View 3 RepliesI have Ubuntu installed in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) with a separate virtual drive that receives rsync backups of some of my online servers.Itns a series of 4 rsync commands. The first two ran fine, not sure about the third and the fourth wrote nothing. The error in rsync said the file system was read only. I confirmed the whole drive was read only, but it did not start that way.I rebooted and the fourth rsync ran fine. I think this is a linux issue and not a VM issue, but it is clearly mounting in r-w and for some reason changed on it own to read only.Does anyone have any idea why this might occur? It is mounted through fstab with the line:UUID=84d4bc5c-7a68-4096-9725-214f2e8b713e /BackupDrive ext3 defaults 0 2

I have Nagios running on it for monitoring switches. It also runs postfix to give email alerts in case of a switch is unreachable. The problem is that the server hangs for a minute and returns to normal operation. During this period if a switch is polled it cannot be reached and hence Nagios shows the Flapping state on the switches. I need to understand as to why the server hangs
View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing the EPEL Repository, I went in and installed Cobbler to my DHCP/Gateway box.Everything went smoothly on the installation front. I went ahead and modified the cobbler settings file (/etc/cobbler/settings) to point to my server IP (same box), and then got tftp running properly. Now here's the problem.Normally, you need to run `cobbler check` to find issues and correct them. I run that, and all I get is blank. Nothing. It just hangs at the prompt until I kill it using CTRL+C.When I CTRL+C from the hanging, it states "cobblerd does not appear to be running/accessible"...

Problem : centos 5.3 hangs while remotely copying data onto this server.
I have A centos 5.3 x86 Version installed on Xeon Quad core , running on 8 GB DDR2 RAM, RAID 1 confgured on SATA drives. this was old installation copy and It has many more things running on it.Therfore, I can't just reinstall it.
I have setup SAMBA PDC + ldap on it. I encounter that system hangs when I copy data into this server from LAN computers.
My troubleshooting steps :
1. I have checked for network issue , My network works fine when I transfer data between other LAN compuers.
2. Even I have tried confguring seprate LAN....
3. I thought their might be some problem with my SAMBA configuration, therefore I did data transfer from sftp .
I am an experienced Linux admin and have been using SuSE for many years. My development machine has had every version of SuSE since '02 and although it is a little old, is in good working order. (AMD
2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)
When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.
I am attempting to upgrade a system from 4.7 to 5.2 using a (now) DVD drive attached to the onboard IDE. Originally I had tried using a remote NFS image and a USB stick but I thought maybe there was a problem with the image. I can get up to the point of the installation of selecting the keyboard for the system and then it freezes and never goes any further. It doesn't appear to be a kernel panic since I can still switch between consoles.
I've got an MSI K9NGM2-FID with 14 drives in it. It serves as a file server for our backup server. It's got a secondary 4 port Silicon Image SII 3114 SATA card using the sata_sil module, and an old IDE Promise FastTrak TX2000. Technically I could have 16 drives but the 750W PS is walking the fine line on tripping it's self-breaker with the 14 drives and 7 fans. I would like to NOT have to disconnect all of this to do the upgrade.
I thought maybe that running the install using the "noprobe" option would help so it didn't detect and load the modules for the Silicon Image or the Promise cards and detect all of the drives but it still gets stuck on the step after selecting the keyboard. The installation info console and the dmesg console don't really provide any useful information. The installation console says:
INFO : moving (1) to step welcome
INFO : moving (1) to step language
INFO : moving (1) to step keyboard
INFO : moving (1) to step findrootparts
And the last lines of the dmesg console says:
<6>device-mapper: multipath: version 1.0.5 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath round-robin: version 1.0.0 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath emc: version 0.0.3 loaded
Is there a hidden "debug" option that will turn on a lot of extra logging?
I had a power failure the other day and my server shutdown abruptly. After bringing the server up I noticed that the /var partition came up as read only. I was not able to edit the crontab, not able to write to files within /var/log/ and do other write operations within /var.
I did a mount and it showed that /var was mounted read and write but when trying to run certain operations the system was still saying that it was read only.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am new to Centos and linux in general. I have just got myself a Dell 1950 server with 2x 1T SATA2 hard disks in it. now the server comes with a PERC5i Raid card with 512Mb. Well I put these in raid 0 and the raid card initilzed the disks to 128 writeback and read ahead. When I loaded centos it did not recognize the dell layout so therefore wanted to initalize it again, so I done this as it wanted. Now I created a 80gb boot and o/s partition and a 100gb swap the rest was created into LVM space to run solus vmwear. But I found the raid 0 to be getting extreamly slow read and write speeds.
Example same disks
Desktop PC max 214mb/s windows vista 64
Server with centos 104mb/s
Now I am not sure but I am told that I need to align the o/s with the raid card settings but I have no idea how to do this. How to do this in plain easy step by step instructions. I mean how to calculate it, how to format the disk this way, and what files to edit where if needed. I have spent hours trying to figure out why my raid 0 is slower than a single disk.
while iam installing centos 5.2 i am getting following error :
LVM Operation failed vcreate failed for <fsset.partition device instance at 0xb7C1ef6c>

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I have a large collection of VCDs (they used to be very popular and cheap here before DVDs became popular - basically just Data CD with a specific file structure) which I was transferring to my harddrive for easier viewing.
I stopped a few months ago and wanted to do some more today, but find that I can't access them anymore. The VCD is mounted ok, and I can see the root folder, but when I try and go into any folders, Dolphin hangs, the message log shows this over and over again:

I have tried with 2 different DVD drives (both IDE, on different channels), and confirmed the disk works fine when accessed from Windows on the same hardware, so the problem must be with Fedora.

i am trying to install centos 5.5 x86_64 as a guest OS in vmware server 2.0.2 using netinstall iso. Installation runs fine until the point, when it tries to install selinux-policy-targeted-2.4.6-279.el5.noarch, the whole virtual pc hangs at this.any ideas? i tried to google few things about this, but i have found nothing. this has happened 3 times in row, whole virtual pc always hangs at the same package. i dont have any other problems with vmware, gentoo runs and installs fine in it.i would prefer to do installation using netinstall.iso, it would take a lot of time to download all cds or whole dvd and all i require is a very basic set of packages.

I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for wlan0.
The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.

This remains indefinitely. While the arrow is being circled, here are the results of 'getinfo.sh device'

I have encountered the same problem as indicated in this post: "udev hang after upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4"[URL]... I'm testing the upgrade path to centos 5.4 on several virtual machines prior to upgrading our production systems. I have upgraded centos 5.2 --> centos 5.4 and centos 5.3 to centos 5.4. In both cases udev hangs after the upgrade. The following message is displayed on the console: "Starting udev: Wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED]"
I found another related post: "udev hangs on boot for a long time, suspect pam_console_apply"[URL]..So, I booted by VMs using the "udevdebug" option to grub and received the same error message - "udevd-event [###]: run_program: Waiting ## seconds for output of '/sbin/pam_console_apply /dev/..."
In my /etc/ldap.conf file "bind_policy hard" is commented out. I added a line "bind_policy soft" as described in the post and my VMs booted fine. NOTE: This problem is not encountered with a fresh install of CentOS 5.4 and the "bind_policy hard" option in the /etc/ldap.conf is commented out as in the upgraded systems. What is really causing this problem and how do I get it addressed? I have a couple hundred systems to update from various releases of CentOS 5 to the latest current version 5.4. It would be nice to get this bug squashed..

The problem: CentOS 5.3 DVD i386 didn't install, the screen becomes unreadable because of vertical bars just after anaconda start running. Choosing at boot time different "linux resolutions" did not help, as well as the "text mode" still useless because Logical Volumes need to be created/handled and the graphical interface is mandatory.

I have a strange issue. The only time I have trouble with yum is when awstats is included in an update. When it is, it always hangs on it when it gets to it. Yum will not complete.
