Fedora Installation :: Doesn't Work - Goes Straight To The Windows XP Login?
Aug 17, 2011I burned Fedora onto a disk, but when I turn on the system it just goes straight to the Windows XP login.
I thought it was something wrong with the disk or something like that, but when I pop in the disk on my Dad's laptop, the installation for Fedora runs perfectly.
Also, yes, I checked the order for booting and the CD drive comes before the hard drive.

Dec 19, 2010I install Fedora 11 for file sharing from windows client Win 95/98, Win xp & xp home. I can login from win xp & xp home to access folder but I can't login from win 95/98 to access folder. I got the error message... "The domain password supplied is not correct or access to your logon has been denied". from win 95/98 Desktop computers.

Jan 27, 2010I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

Feb 15, 2010My computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives

Jun 3, 2011yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console
username: Name
password:
last used: [date]
login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

i have installed F13 on unused space, is there a way for me to access and fix it? or at least get some files from there?

Nov 21, 2010I just added "export PATH=.:'printevn PATH'" to ~/.bashrc, then i can't use any commands, like "vim" or 'ls', it shows 'command not found'.
I cound't figure it out why. Then I logged out and tried to login. Another more serious problem occurred. after I type in login id and pass, it shows login seems to be right, but it doesn't login normally, but immediately bring me back to the login dialog box, and ask me to type log info again. I tried many times, it just constantly brought me back to the login page.

I used to have boot screens really nice ones come up at random after Grub loaded.
Now with the 11.3 that is gone.
I looked at GDM and see it is different from my previous version and does not seem to have the option to have the login window.
Is there any way to get back the old version of GDM?

Mar 21, 2010i upgraded to the 10.04 beta today . i upgraded from 9.10 64bit. I am on a dual boot system, Ubuntu is on my secondary hard-drive and windows xp is on my primary hard drive.Since upgrading to the 10.04 beta i cannot login into XP, GRUB restarts when i select it. selecting Ubuntu works though. during the upgrade process GRUB prompted me to select some options and to be quite honest i was not entirely sure what to select, regardless i tried three times to select options, twice it rejected me from selecting all of the ( what seemed to be) disks. until i tried selecting two out of the 5 names on the list it gave me.

The ideal situation would be to turn the Linux machine on, remotely log in with the Linux username and password and be presented with a desktop, and when I disconnect the session ends. I don't want to have a session already going to connect to... it seems like I can't accomplish this using VNC. What other options are there?

Feb 23, 2016I'm using Windows 7 & Debian Wheezy,and samba is the software that I use to share the folders/files for Linux & Windows.
The issue is one of my users(nv) cannot login to her folder in Linux using his windows credentials(the password keep prompt).But If I'm using my windows password she can access to her linux folder.But it is a temporary solution as when she restart the pc,the password authentication will prompt again.

/dev/sda1 boots fine to the system restore from Acer. when selecting Windows option on boot menu it simply flickers and returns to the menu. /dev/sda3 is non bootable, symply filesystem. When using boot loader settings from YasT I go to other and press "Propose new configuration" it changes the menu but when pressing OK it asks for a floppy disk and doesn't save the configuration (so on new boot I return to the same).

- My laptop, with Ubuntu 10.04
- My PC, with Windows Seven
When I try to access my shared files ON my PC FROM my laptop, Samba ask for a password. I typed my Windows Seven login/password, pressed OK... and again, Samba asked for the password. I thought the problem came from Windows Seven, not allowing remote access from a local user account... I tried to allow anonymous access on my PC, but it didn't help...
But then, I learned I could also mount my shared files by adding a line in /etc/fstab :

In the cred-file, I put the exact same login and password then before... and bingo, it works.
But the problem is not fully resolved, as I can only browse files from the "mounted shortcut". I can't use my remote printer anymore, or access any external HD that I share on my PC So I really need to get samba working.
Ubuntu :: Windows Domain Not Available Until After Local Login?
Aug 6, 2010I used Likewise (specifically, likewise-open-gui) to add my computer to the Windows domain at work. I can log into the computer with my domain credentials.
Until I reboot.
If the computer ever shuts down fully, I get an authentication failure when I log in using the domain account. But if I log in using a local account and run likewise-open-gui again from there, everything works. I don't have to rejoin the domain, only launch the program, close it, and log out of the local account. This seems to allow me to log into the domain afterward.
Is there something in specific that I can add to my startup scripts that will connect me to the domain before login?

Aug 14, 2010For some reason, several irksome changes have occurred. The worst is that it won't let me log in. It will not accept my password.? I was told that if I downloaded Ubuntu, I could use that to get to control panel and fix the problem. After 4.5 hours on another pc, I had the download and the cd does boot Ubuntu. What is my next step I have no working knowledge of Ubuntu.

Jul 15, 2010I have set up Samba to act as a domain login for a Windows 7 PC. The Windows 7 PC has the two correct registry compat entries.
So, I've added "root" to smbpasswd and the Windows machine tries the "LINNIS" server. Authentication is successful, as stated in the Samba log but the Windows machine fails with the following:
"The specified computer account could not be found. Contact an administrator to verify the account is in the domain. If the account has been deleted, unjoin, reboot and rejoin the domain."
I feel like I'm doing something dumb, but the authentication passed so what is it talking about?

Jan 5, 2011Possible Duplicate: Basic ssh tunneling through generic linux ssh server/client. I'm have trouble transfering files again from my work PC, which is a linux machine to my home windows PC.My work has changed it so I now need to SSH twice before I can access my PC.So I need to:
ssh username@server.name
password: xxxxx
I then need to do it again.
ssh computer_name
password: xxxxx
I've tried accessing directly via my computers IP but to of no avail. Is there a way I can use pscp or file zilla to ssh twice so I can transfer files?

I deleted it, which solved the problem EXCEPT that now when I boot, instead of the Xfce login prompt, I get an X-Windows login prompt. This takes me to a terminal (which apparently reads my .zshrc file), from which I can start an Xfce session by running xfce4-session. How can I get back to booting into the Xfce login screen?

We have a Windows 2003 Server domain and no plans to change it.I've set up the LTSP server, joined the domain and everything seems to be working fine, I can login to the LTSP server with a student account.
The next thing I want to achieve is give the students access to their "My Documents" folder on the Windows 2003 server. Is it possible to have a student log on to the terminal server (who has never logged in before) and have it automatically mount their share on the windows server?
