Mar 28, 2011

I need to remotely Ubuntu 10.10 server. However I want to do it froma Windows XP VISTA or Windows 7 machine. Ideall I would like to login using http web browser. The primary reason is because I want to be able to update the server software remotely when required. Ofcourse it would be nice to see the GUI and be able.10 to perform all functions as if I was sitting at the computer. I heard of webmin.... or webadmin... However I have not find this software in the Ubuntu Software Centre and I would like it to be good for Ubuntu 10.10.

Tried using Terminal Server Client without luck, i get this message:

Ubuntu :: Way To Remote GUI Login From Windows

Apr 20, 2010

Is there a way to remotely login to a Linux machine from Windows without having to have a session already going? The ideal situation would be to turn the Linux machine on, remotely log in with the Linux username and password and be presented with a desktop, and when I disconnect the session ends. I don't want to have a session already going to connect to... it seems like I can't accomplish this using VNC. What other options are there?

Installation :: Unistall Windows Vista From An Ubuntu / Vista Dual-boot?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Fedora Installation :: Dual Booting Vista And / 11 Wipes Out Windows Vista?

Nov 18, 2009

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop Login To Gdm After Remote Restart

Feb 6, 2011

I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine. There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.

I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Remote Vista Desktop Using RDP

Jan 26, 2010

i am a new user to Ubuntu and Linux for that matter. I am using ubuntu 9.10. I want to remote from my Ubuntu machine into my Vista desktop (Vista Ultimate).i can do so with ease using the various Ubuntu application through vnc. However, whenever I try to do so through RDP I am unable to do so. When I try to remote into the Vista machine through RDP it will launch the Vista login screen where I enter my user name and password. It always comes back saying that the password is incorrect even though the login is the same that is used to login everyday. It doesn't seem to be a firewall problem because I disabled it and get the same results. I also get the same results when using either a wired connection or a wireless connection on the Ubuntu machine. My normal network consists of the Ubunu notebook, my Vista Ultimate Desktop (wired to the router) and my Vista Ultimate Tablet PC on a wireless connection.

I might mention that I can remote using RDP from my Ubuntu notebook into into the Vista Tablet PC with no problem. But not the so with the Desktop. Always fails telling me that I am using an incorrect password. I am the only user on either Vista machine and as far as I can tell everything is set the same on both Vista systems (securrity, remote, etc.) unless I am missing something, which I apparently am.Not sure if it makes any difference but the Tablet pc has always run Vista but the Desktop was orriginally an XP and for the life of me I can't remember if I did an upgrade to Vista Ultimate or a clean install since it has been a year or so.

Ubuntu Security :: Cannot Update Remote Vista Files

Jan 20, 2010

I am trying to access files on a laptop (running Windows 7) from an Ubuntu desktop running 9.10. I can view the Windows 7 files just fine. Listing their permissions from an Ubuntu terminal shows them to be read/write by everyone. But, I am unable to update any of the files from Ubuntu.

I mount the files using the command:
mount -t cifs //richard-pc/C -o username=***,password=***,dir_mode=0777,fi
le_mod=0777 /mnt/windows7c

The permissions on the Windows 7 files on the laptop are set to Full Control by Everyone.

General :: Remote Assistance Between Machine And VISTA?

May 18, 2011

My cousin needs some help with his computer (I know a bit more about MS then Linux at this point). He has VISTA HOME EDITION, Which as far as the internet tells me ... cannot do RA without a third party software. But he says he found it and sent the invite to my email. I have already download rdesk (I think that's what I want) so I can initiate a RA from terminal with IP or server URL, But everytime I try to access his through IP it says:

Code:
me@linux:$ rdesk ip.cous.comp.here
!!--'DISPLAY FAILED TO LAUNCH'
me@linux:$

I was going to also look at getting tightVNC, but am not 100% sure it does what I want...
Other then this I have no idea what to do. I have never done remote with a Linux and a MS system ...

(By the way, I am running Dreamlinux which is Debian based. It is the latest -far as I know- which is 3.5 built on Lenny stable. My desktop session is Xfce, but I can enable KDE or GNOME for applications that may need it. My cousin and I are 100 miles apart at the moment so this seems to be our only option.

Ubuntu :: Windows Vista Gone - When Restart - Does Not Give Me The Option For Windows

Oct 14, 2010

I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.

Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

Ubuntu :: How To Remote Login And Allow VNC

Jun 16, 2010

I just installed 10.04. I currently have a monitor but I want to ditch this and use a VNC client to do what I need to on my server. Here is the process I'm using:

1) Remote login via SSH from another computer
2) Once logged in, I run 'service gdm start' to start up GNOME
3) I have the login set to automatically login in with my user account

At this point I thought I was home free and I could connect via VNC, but now I'm getting a prompt for a keyring unlock, as explained here: [URL]..This has been a total pain.

1) Are there any other simple solutions out there so that I can remotely log in and be able to connect to my server via VNC?

2) If not, how do I get past this keyring issue?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Samba "net Rpc Shutdown" Remote To Vista

Nov 4, 2009

This is most likely a Vista config thing, but basically I'm using "net rpc SHUTDOWN -f 192.168.xxx.xxx -U username%password" to remotely shutdown both XP and Vista machines.
The XP machines shutdown fine. They have the same local user account names and passwords as the Vista machines. The Vista machines repond with NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE.

I've checked (way too many times) that my usernames and passwords are correct, Ive disabled the Windows Firewall in Vista, and I've been googling for two days and can't really remember all the other things I've tried.I'm sure it's probably some kind of security thing in Vista, but I barely ever use Vista and don't know where to go from here.
