I have downloaded some themes packages ( Login Screens ) for Gnome from here when installing them under :
>Apparence > Theme > Install Themes
I receive a message Some thing like :

i tried many ones without success how install them OR hox to fix the problem (If there is a problem )
when I get into the login page, I can only see the background and the login box in the middle of the page just turns whole white and keeps flashing. no response for any clicks. I was force to ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to init 1 to do my work. But I still want to use my graphical desktop either KDE or Gnome is ok. I am using gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just rolled out about 60 ubuntu 10.04 desktops. All of them are joined to our windows domain using likewiseopen.
At the gnome login screen, the users have to click "other" and type in their windows username and password.
Is there any way to bypass this and just have the username displayed?
I'm having some trouble with Gnome's Login screen. What happens is that I type my username and password correctly, the login screen fades out and everything seems normal until the login screen appears again, I enter my username and password again and the login fades out only to appear again and again and again and so on.
Only the root user works with the login, and also if I use failsafe mode, then login in textmode and then use "startx" it works fine.
I'd like to download a whole website for offline reading, I know wget does this, but how would it work with a site that needs login to view content? Of course I've got the password to login, I just don't know how to let wget know that.

I checked the soundlevels in "sound" no problems what i could see
the "sound" in yast trying to play test sound and that works.
..... etc works.
"notification sound" works when updating system and when attaching battery-charger to laptop works
and on "startup application" is still set to play sounds on login What should be the next step to solve problem ?

I installed 11.3 last week and eventually got nvidia drivers working. I was quite happy how most things were progressing, then the temptation to upgrade to 11.4 got too much I upgraded today (online, not dvd) and everything went well. On rebooting the desktop came up as normal and all was good. I installed nvidia and got that working ok. I then installed Gnome-Shell and couldn't figure out how to get it working. I've been using Fedora recently and the Gnome-Shell option is available at Login. I then discovered the gnome-shell --replace terminal command and I tried it. It seemed to load ok, but as I had used the terminal, when I closed the terminal it seems like compiz crashed. I lost all windows borders and nothing was usable. I REISUB'd and started again. On reboot I got a CLI login prompt. After logging in I tried startx, to no avail. I then tried gdm start and got to the desktop again (not gnome-shell). I Alt+F2'd and ran gnome-shell --replace again and all was good - except no network I rebooted again, and got the CLI again. Went through it all again and tried to configure network (wireless) no good. I then connected an ethernet cable and tried again. That worked, but I'm not sure why - I didn't think anything was downloaded. Anyway wireless now works ok - even on reboot. However I'm still getting dumped to the CLI login on restarts.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed xfce with synaptic and when i rebooting, i can't log in with my normal user on gnome and xfce, but i can it with terminal (ctrl + alt + fX), but i can login in gnome with a new user.
I have uninstall xfce and remove gnome and reinstall it but i still cant...
dpkg-reconfigure gnome-shell i think didnt change nothing...
I haven't /etc/X11/ directory...
On terminal, if i do startx, works, but i cant login gnome anyway...
I just installed Fedora 13 on a new computer and the timed login for gnome does not work unless you manually select it. This surprised me as I upgraded a separate computer to Fedora 13 and the timed login feature still correctly functions and does not require user interaction.

Adding the above to /etc/gdm/custom.conf only adds an Automatic Login option that you have to manually select and then the computer will login. I would deem this less than useful.

I know you can substitute the timed login with the automatic login and it will instantly login, but this provides no option to select another user. I have been unable to find any information why this feature no longer works and wanted to know if there is a new way or if anyone knows why the timed login feature was crippled.
It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell GX240. I have severe difficulty logging in. If I try to login on GNOME or GNOME fail safe mode , I just cant get in . I keep getting the login screen again. I am able to go into terminal mode. Sometimes I have to try upto 100 times to login in GNOME or failsafe mode. Once I am in everything is fine. Is there a way to do some troublshooting? Also transfer to USB sticks is very slow - sometimes as slow as 1MB per min. Is this normal with Ubuntu?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.

/dev/sda1 boots fine to the system restore from Acer. when selecting Windows option on boot menu it simply flickers and returns to the menu. /dev/sda3 is non bootable, symply filesystem. When using boot loader settings from YasT I go to other and press "Propose new configuration" it changes the menu but when pressing OK it asks for a floppy disk and doesn't save the configuration (so on new boot I return to the same).

Monday I came back to work to discover a 17 GB log file in /var/log that ate up my root partition and gave me trouble running. I deleted it, which solved the problem EXCEPT that now when I boot, instead of the Xfce login prompt, I get an X-Windows login prompt. This takes me to a terminal (which apparently reads my .zshrc file), from which I can start an Xfce session by running xfce4-session. How can I get back to booting into the Xfce login screen?

The windows manager I am using is "gnome-shell" that comes as default with Fedora 15. However, I am wondering if I could completely remove this and install a different windows manager, such as Xfce 4.8. I am not talking about completely removing Fedora 15 and then installing Fedora 15 xfce spin. Just the window manager. How easy would it be to remove the gnome-shell windows manager and then install xfce 4.8 windows manager? Any steps to do this?

I can access the site from my Mac using virtual Windows XP Pro in VirtualBox. But I cannot access the site from any Windows machine on the LAN, and it's frustrating I cannot get to it with name resolution nor with IP address.Here are some of my related configs:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having problems listening to windows media streams from a particular website ( http://radiotime.com ) whenever I try to listen to a stream from firefox, the page loads then connects but i have no sound (i am actually trying to listen to those two chinese radios [URL].. I have the mplayerplug-in/gecko-mediaplayer installed, but it doesn't work, I tought that maybe there was a problem with that plugin so I deactivated it and installed the vlc plugin, after restarting firefox and trying to listen to those streams again, the vlc plugin tried to read it but it still would not work. I even tried to install the Silverlight Plug-In without any result, does anybody know what I could do to make windows media audio streams work ? it is wierd because i seem to be able to watch windows media video streams from other websites, but i cannot listen to any stream from this one, it used to work for mp3 streams only, but after desinstalling/resinstalling the mplayer plug in, it doesn't work anymore on this website. I can listen to those streams without any problem under windows 7, so the problem isn't coming from the website.
