Fedora :: Vboxdrv Gets Deleted After Restart
Apr 2, 2010
I'm having a weird issue, I have Virtualbox 3.1 installed on the Fedora 12 and everytime I restart the "/dev/vboxdrv" gets deleted so every time I need to run "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup".

I have been using Fedora since almost 1 week by now, and I'm really impressed by its features but there is one very small problem that I face everyday. At the first place, I had setup a profile settings for Network so all my static IP, Hosts, DNS servers were all configured in that profile. Now I had filled in something in the Primary DNS Server and then I had saved it. The internet works after that but when I reboot, that Primary DNS server gets deleted. I have to type it all the time and then click on save and then start using the internet again.

I heva Debian "Lenny" 5.0 with a 2.6.31.3 kernel. I've got some trouble with VirtualBox.When I start virtualbox I get such outbut:
Quote:
[sergey@localhost:~]$ virtualbox WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist. install the virtualbox-ose-modules package for your kernel and load the module named vboxdrv into your system. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.
But when I do 'insmod vboxdrv.ko' (or even w/o '.ko', 'modprobe vboxdrv') it says that there is no vboxdrv.ko.What have I to do to run virtual-machines? (NOTE: Kernel 2.6.31.3 I've compiled manually, and there is no virtualbox-ose-modules package for kernel 2.6.31.3 in repository)

The module vboxdrv cannot be succesfully compiled on my system. It has OpenSuSE 11.2 with kernel 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop
The following rpms are installed:
gcc, make, autoconf, automake and pam-devel are present too.
The command
leads to an error message:
The log contains these lines in the first part:
Is something wrong with the kernel headers or source?

Recently I had updated the kernel but afterwards I can't run virtualbox because the kernel modules aren't loaded.
Virtual box: 3.1.4 r57640 OpenSuse110-x86_64 Open Suse 11.0 running kernel-default-2.6.25.20-0.7
When I try to start vboxdrv manually I can find the message: kernel: warning: `VirtualBox' uses deprecated v2 capabilities in a way that may be insecure.
After I installed the older kernel-default-2.6.25.20-0.6 version I can start virtualbox.
But, much to my suprise, I also get this message with this kernel level. But still, the kerneldrivers are loaded and I can run virtualbox.

I can't start NFS server anymore. I get the following message:
"insserv: FATAL: service syslog is missed in the runlevels 4 to use service vboxdrv"
"insserv: exiting now!"
Is it vbox conflicting with nfs server?

I installed VirtualBox-OSE and VirtualBox-Kernel from the Slackbuilds at slackbuilds.org.When I start VirtualBox I get the following message on the CLI: Code: WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded.Either there is no module available for the current kernel (2.6.33.4-smp) or it failed to load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.I gave /etc/rc.d/rc.vboxdrv executable permissions, and then ran.The only issue is, I have to do this each time that I reboot, should I add 'modprobe vboxdrv' to one of the startup scripts or is something else wrong?

I have problems to get Virtualbox 3.2.8 under openSuse 11.3 (2.6.34.7-0.2-desktop, x86-64) running. I tried both the VirtualBox-3.2-3.2.8_64453_openSUSE113-1.x86_64 package from Virtualbox and self-compiled drivers as well as the newest RPM packages from openSuse(backports). I mostly get the following error during the vboxdrv load:
[ 269.095562] vboxdrv: Trying to deactivate the NMI watchdog permanently...
[ 269.095562] vboxdrv: Successfully done.
[ 269.095562] vboxdrv: Found 6 processor cores.
[code]....
However I already tried different combinations of previous kernels and virtualbox versions and the error persists. This is somewhat strange. Sometimes I was able to get proper drivers when reinstalling the whole stuff under failsafe mode a couple of times. But still not cleary reproducable.

I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem. It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.

I keep getting the error below even though I:
1. Added myself to vboxusers
2. Installed dkms
3. Ran the "sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" command.
When I run "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" it gives me the error: modprobe vboxdrv failed. use 'dmesg' to find out why
Code:
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'
as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. One other thing, I looked in the file system and there is no "/dev/vboxdrv". Is this correct?

I'm having problems with Screen and VirtualBox, and the problems seem similar as if crucial components have vanished. Here is the screen issue and the last three posts are me. Basically, the solutions have been temporary so far. I changed the mode and group of /var/run/screen like the OP said but have not shutdown yet, so I don't know if that's a permanent solution yet. The other two temporary solutions didn't prove to be temporary until I shutdown and came back several hours later. Screen was still working after a reboot.
The same thing is happening with VBox: after doing what VBox tells me to do, the solution was temporary, and the same problem popped up after the next boot. Here are similar problems: I made sure I was in the vboxusers group. I added the module like the first one said, and it took me to another level of malfunction. I didn't take a screenshot or make a note of the first error message, but I've attached the second. Also, sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup did not work this time after adding the module. Like the first link said, vboxdrv didn't exist for him or her, so maybe my problem is similar. My terminal says it "Cannot unload module vboxdrv".

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

So I installed F12 x86_64 version the other day. Everything was going okay. So today I signed on to my windows 7 instead. While I was on it. I was looking at the extra space I had allocated for F12. Well I thought I was going to delete that but I actually deleted the F12 partition. This means that I don't have a MBR anymore. Is there anyway I can get my original MBR back onto my windows 7? I'm going to buy a separate hard drive to install windows 7 later. I just would like to know if I really screwed up by deleting F12. If this helps, it did switch my bootloader from the main MBR in 7, to grub. I tried EasyBCD to reinstall it but it keeps say it failed.

I accidentally deleted /usr/lib , by trying to delete a file from that directory, i didnt notice there was a blank space before the file i wanted to delete , so i had to reinstall fedora 14 again but it's ok because i just installed fedora yesterday. The question is if i can just make a backup of the whole directory /usr/lib , and other important directories and if something goes wrong , can i just copy and paste to their respective directories ? will that restore system stability or will it crash because of time stamps or anything like that.

I'm trying to install windows xp on a hard drive that has fedora installed. When I booted the windows xp cd, it would get stuck on a blank black screen after displaying the words ""Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration."I searched for that problem and the solution to it seemed to be to clear the mbr. I tried doing that in fedora from the terminal using: dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda1 bs=446 count=1That didn't work. I kept getting this message:0+0 records in0+0 records out0 bytes (0 B) copied, 2.2978e-05 s, 0.0 kB/sAt this point, I backed up all my data in fedora thinking that I would delete the fedorainstallation and start anew with xp and then reinstall fedora.
I had an old slackware cd around that I thought I could use to run fdisk from and delete the partitions for fedoraen I did that I found that it wouldn't recognize anypartitions. I kept trying to print out the partition table and it would display nothing. But I can view the partition table when I run fdisk from the terminal in fedoraUnfortunately I lost the cds I used to install fedora long ago and I don't have any blank cds that I could write isos to. So, my question is would there be any disastrous consequences if I deleted the fedora partitions from the terminal while running fedora?

I am using Fedora 10 on my laptop. For some applications i still have windows XP installed. Because of the fact that Windows has to be reinstalled once a year (it's only windows ) I deleted the MBR accidentely. Now I can't start Fedora again. When I start Linux using the Installation CD of Fedora 10 my partition is not mounted automatically because I am using LVM.

I am trying to setup DNS domain name in my server (Fedora), which has static ip address.First, I put the DNS domain name in system-config-network->DNS->DNS search path. After restarting the network, it is deleted automatically.second, so I put the DNS domain name in /etc/resolv.conf as search mydomainname . After network restart, it is also deleted automatically. In both case domain name did not work (i.e, I can't connect to my server from outside using domain name, I can by ip address, internet is working fine). However, I found that the domain name is written in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with search=mydominaname.

I have a Laptop where I installed both Fedora 11 and windows 7 dual boot.
While I was upgrading Fedora 11 to Fedora 14 using preupgrade, I tried to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst file to make an option to continue upgrading the system after rebooting.
Accidentally, I deleted the file content and I couldn't restore it
I knew then that I'll face a problem when I reboot the system, and I faced it >> the grub selection menu disappeared , and only the line (grub> ) appeared when I reboot the system.
1- These commands:
Code:
But when I rebooted , nothing changed and the same (grub> ) appeared again.
2- I used the instructions in the PDF attached, but unfortunately nothing changed.
I think that I have to rewrite the menu.lst and grub.cnf files but I'm not expert and I don't know exactly what was there (locations , commands , etc. )
The current system monitor for the file system is shown in the next image:
